Title: Life still grim in French suburbs despite pledges
Post by: loco on November 27, 2007, 10:52:17 AM
And I thought things were fine and dandy in France.  How are things in the US by comparison?

"PARIS, Nov 27 (Reuters) - Life has not improved for the inhabitants of France's poor, ethnically diverse suburbs since the riots of 2005, despite millions of euros in cash pledges and President Nicolas Sarkozy's election promises.

High unemployment, underperforming schools, poor relations with the police, inadequate housing and controversial new immigration laws have created a generation of frustrated youths ready to turn to violence at any time."

This is a far cry from the world of Ratatouille, isn't it?   :P  Not the "wine and cheese, love is in the air" kind of picture that's painted when you think of France, huh?  Kinda sad when you think about it.   :-\

That's a great movie.  Best animated movie since The Incredibles IMO.

France needs to bring back Pepé Le Pew.  :)

They had similar issues back in the 40s and 50s when there were a flood of immigrants from poorer European countries. Most of them at that time were Christian though - there may be more of a conflict with Muslims.

France is in a terrible state.  Trade unions and farmers hold the country to ransom.  High unemployment and a crumbling pension system. Tax cuts and growing public debt have put them at odds with the European Central Bank.  Plus hordes of immigrants ready to riot at the drop of a hat (or a couple of kids riding illegally on a motorbike :P).

And they called the UK the sick man of europe....
