Obama said he'd use them for their experience and wisdom.

Does this compromise his desire for change?

Or does this show he admits he has shortcomings in experience but will do the smart thing and learn from others?

It shows his staff of advisers are stupid.

The statement insinuates exactly what you said.

Obama should have said:

Clinton and Gores input, becuase of their experience and wisdom, are something that would help in our goal for change in our great country.
