Yes, I do. Very wide. More chest, less triceps and shoulders.

no, i go about shoulder width. Most guys on here probably use more weight than Ruhl, so they have to take that wide a grip.

It's funny. I started doing it that wide after watching this some years ago and I think it has improved my chest...though I must admit that with that wide a grip for me I can't bench as much as I would with a closer one.

I tend to do them fairly wide too, but yeah, nowhere near that wide.  I don't even think it's possible to go that wide on a free bar version...

too wide kills my shoulders.... and i think is begging for a pec tear..
well for me anyway..
it annoys me to see him pressing and his girl has her hand on the bar...
if you cn bench it.. noone should touch it
plus he's using  a smith machine  :-\

It would hit the chest even more; some can handle the shoulder stress, not others.

Also, his shoulders are so wide that the grip's not as wide for him, and the stress from balancing isn't as pronounced on a smith.

I throw in some lighter sets that wide (on incline) and it is a pain in the ass to complete.  It does seem like it would lead to a tear easily so I have backed off them.

I used to do it like Ruhl...really wide and down to the throat...awesome gains in the chest..makes it protrude really nice.,..but had to stop due the killer ligament pains in my shoulders...pain was bad and took a long time to recover from...my poundages were actually going DOWN due to this...stopped going too wide and definitely stopped bringing the bar to my throat and instead to the nipple or just below it..which stopped the severe ligament pain...now I recover much more quickly..and poundages keep going up

I've been going pretty wide lately and it hits the outter chest very well, especially w/high volume and lower weights. I would never go heavy with it though. Serge was crazy.

Most gym's I have been in always seem to have one or two guy's doing the collar to collar grip BP'ing. One thing about it is that it can give a better sense of confidence. A feeling of  more solid gripping support when the hand is pressed against those collars. If you have a shorten than average hand span the extra wide grip may be limited.  I have suggested before that to improve the BP and add muscle, the three grip approach can be helpful. Two sets collar to collar, two sets middle grip and two sets close grip (about 8-12 inches). Do not lower the bar to the neck area with the extra wide grip...caution here. Upper/middle pec's area would be suggested.

the wider grip worked great when i had to work past a shoulder problem.. i had my hadns on the collars. Now i do everything inside the rings per louie simmons saying that the close grip prevents injuries mre so than any other grip so i'm training with it narrowed down now.

i actually went wide this morn...felt ok too...i gotta rack the bar lower though, damn near couldnt reach when i tried to re-rack after my set..but i guess it feels ok

Haha the same thing happened here. I wasn't going too heavy (it felt a bit harder than a closer grip) but yeah when it was time to re rack i could only just reach ;D

Still it did feel ok, but ill probably just stick to using a regular grip.

Is it just me and him? But i find the same working for me too. Remember how i always nagg about not hitting the chest all the time? I tried wide this evenin' and it really hit my chest. I think the wider the more chest involve, the slower, the more arms.

It will work the inner chest but the outter chest takes a much bigger beating.

I never do it as
a) i do low volume workouts so would rather perform a more 'tried and tested' exercise such as standard flat barbell/dumbell bench etc
b) Common opinion seems to suggest that you're more likely to injure yourself doing this than a standard bench...so not worth the risk for me.

Lets not forget it depends on your arms length too...its just too unconfortable to bench with wide grip if your arms arent long enough. I go with the medium grip. wide grip is also dangerous for injuries.....see Ruhls chest.
