Snowmobilers Rescued After Icy Plunge
A snowmobile with two people on it, including a pregnant woman, plunges into icy waters. But, incredibly, both survive the accident.
It took place around 2:30 a.m. Sunday on the Wolf River near the Town of Fremont.
The Winnebago County Sheriff's office says 29-year-old Shaun Wenzel of Waupaca County and 22-year-old Jennifer Pliska of Stevens Point were on their snowmobile when it went into the water.
It's unclear who was driving, but Wenzel is in jail tonight for violating his probation by having alcohol in his system during the accident.
Hospital officials say Pliska was treated and released from their care.
Bill and Cindy Schmitt say they were inside their river front home when they heard an unfamiliar sound, a woman screaming, "I'm not breaking into her home, and I'm six months pregnant."
The Schmitt's discovered the couple shocked and scared, standing in their living room.
The Schmitt's learned the couple got out of the water because Wenzel had apparently pounded his fists though the ice to make a path toward solid ground.
Cindy Schmitt says, "He was telling her, she wanted to quit and he kept telling her to keep going, and he was dragging her along."
The Schmitt's say after helping the couple get warm, Paramedics arrived and took them to the hospital.
The Schmitt's hope this incident serves as a lesson to others.
Bill Schmitt says, "They were lucky. The next ones may not be."
