There are two different types: VFR (Visual Flight Rating) and IFR (Instrument Flight Rating). VFR allows you ONLY to fly in clear whether that does not require complete reliance on instruments. IFR allows you to fly anytime.
It all really depends on time management and how fast you can learn. In addition to the written tests, you need approx. 60 to 80 hours of flight time and that typically costs around $200 an hour. So maybe 6 months to a year.
Hope that helps.

thanks for the info
I would love to become a pilot. If I was able to choose I would like to become a helicopter pilot first.
Someday :)

Those cost A LOT more per hour.
Best thing to do is go down to the airport and make friends with a pilot that has a helicopter ;)

I have a UK one.

Excellent!
Thank you very much Freakshow!

You should post the "afterparty" pictures of that particular incident... Let's say Advil wouldnt have done much of a difference anymore./

there is a video of of it on google what a terrible accident. :(

what's it called, I thought it was fake. Holy Crap

there is a video of of it on google what a terrible accident. :(
Oh I have seen it ;)
There are actually a couple of people who filmed it from different areas.... one is were the Mig is just woooshing by him taking everybody right beside him and mangle them up.
Afterparty pictures are messy as shit.
Pilot survived, they run past him with the camera rolling, he was busy to look like nothing has happend collecting his parachute... some guy walks past and taps his shoulder like: Well done Captain smartboy ::)
I think the Pilot was surprised they did not lynch him right there.

My ex was a recreational pilot (IFR). He owned two airplanes; the one I flew and flew in with him most frequently was the Mooney. I never got an official flight rating, but he taught me how to use the radio and land the plane if in case anything happened to him in flight (passed out, heart attack, etc.) If you are serious about flying you need a flight mentor. You also need to find an (online) community. You might want to join AOPA.
General aviation is always more fun than using traditional terminals. :D

I seriously tried, but in a commercial airplane.... not a chance.

After watching that, I don't think I will ever go to an airshow either...that was nasty!

I have heard of people doing it on a commercial flight, but I honestly don't think I'd have the balls to do that. Under the right circumstances, I can be an "in your face" fag but not even I would be that public; I think I'm too modest.
The only way I can see someone doing it is on a very empty flight in the back of the plane, under a big blanket, when no one else is around. The lavatory is way too small for two people. :-[
-
Yes i do, also have Commercial Pilot License (frozen ATPL), instrument-, and multiengine rating. Started flying in an airline about 2 months ago :)
Oh, and took me about 2.5 years to get it, cost 10 000 euros...

No, but i have just over ten hours of flight time logged in. my brother in law is an instructor and works at a flight school so h can take me up for free any time i'd like.
i kow that the minimum hours you need is 45, but you normally have to get 60 hours logged in.

I wish I had a free instructor.
Are you going to keep going and get the license?

no i dont think so. i liek to fly..but i have no reason to get my license. i can get free flights anywhere in the western united states whenever i want, can actually fly whenever i want...and my sister is a travel agent so i can get dirt cheap tickets for longer distance flights as well. no real reason to get my license.

Well, the Private Pilot License won't get anyone free flights or cheaper flights anyway. And, don't know about the rates over there in US, but here in Finland renting a Cessna 152 costs over 100 euros/h, so it would be a lot cheaper to fly with an airline than renting a plane and flying yourself...
BTW, since you have "over 10 hours logged in", i'll take it as you have a student's license and a medical license as well? Since, at least in JAA countries, you can't have school flights (or even touch the controls of the aeroplane) without a student's license :)

It's "Visual Flight Rules" (=VFR) and "Instrument Flight Rules" (=IFR), not "ratings" ;)

What kind of planes do you fly finnpilot?

Planes similar to this (ATR72). Not by any means a huge plane, but a nice plane to start your career with :)

no i dont have shit dude...my borother in law just takes me up and lets me fly whenevr i ask him to. ive flown a couple different variety's of sesna, and two different passenger jets. my favorite was a brand new sesna that the school just purchased recently....it truly is like flying on a video game. really easy and maneuverable and fun to fly.

So you're saying you don't have any kind of license (even student's), and you've flown passenger jets? I call absolute bullshit on that. Either bullshit, or your brother in law shouldn't have any type of license left anymore. Mind telling me what model of passenger jets those were? Since i can't recall any passenger jets that can be flown by only one pilot, which would mean that there has been two pilot's (you're brother in law plus another one) with licenses, and i highly doubt that any sane pilot would let a guy with no license to even sit on a pilot's seat.
You see, this is what happens when you let your son, nephew, or what else, to take controls:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aeroflot_Flight_593
"Passengers 63
Crew 12
Fatalities 75
Survivors 0"
Oh and by the way, it's "Cessna"...

lol fuck no this wasnt a jet that could hold 63 passengers...it held like a maximum of 6 people. its like the size of a CESSNA(fuckign spelling police or what?), but it just has jet engines, and is fully enclosed; where the cessnas i flew have propellers and they have windows you can open while you are flyin....the jet propelled planes i flew go too fast and too high for windows i guesss.
-

That's a big plane to me, sure not a 747 but not exactly a cessna either.
How did you become interested in flying? Also do you play any computer flightsims?

Well, i guess one could say after flying "6 seated, Cessna sized plane", that he has flown a passenger jet :D I'm still curious about which plane it was :) And the reason you probably can't open the windows of those jet planes is that those planes were probably pressurized. And yes, one could assume that you know how to spell Cessna, after all, it's a classic plane ;)

you plan on running coke from columbia to the bahamas, then to south georgia and drive them in the trunks of beat up cars on tow trucks down to miami?

Funny thing is that i was about 5 years old when i decided that i would become a pilot, and since then pretty much didn't have any other option in mind. Probably became interested in flying because my mother and sister both worked in an airline company, so i got to visit the flight deck often when we were at holidays :)
And yeah i like playing FSX every now and then, it's pretty realistic :)

heres a link to the new cessna that i was talking about....although i dont know if cessna is a brand name, or what..but this is what i flew. (i found it on a link from the schools website) http://www.controller.com/listings/detail.aspx?OHID=1121096
...im searching for pictures of a jet that looks like the ones i flew...and the closest ive found yet is the lear jet. but that one is bigger than what i flew..so ill keep looking.

Cool looking little plane :) And yeah, Cessna is a manufacturer :) Still, you should probably keep in mind it's a crime letting a person without any license to fly a plane, and if someone reported about that, your brother in law would end up losing his license. People aren't allowed to drive vehicles without license either, why would they be allowed to fly aircrafts?

Find a copy of FS2002 or 2004, they'll probably run just fine (though il2 is nice too) :)

I'am a private pilot in Las Vegas. If you go to kingschools.com or AOPA.org (I think might be .com) or got to sporty's pilot shop and get dvd's and a Jeppeson (private pilot) book, you can cut you're time and money in half with an instructor lookin at $100/hr for cessna 172 $40/hr for instructor. Make sure you like youre instructor. You will want to start as a vfr pilot (visual flight rules) and if you like it move on to IFR (Insrument flight rules) to fly in bad weather and night. It will take you 4-6 months if you go 2-3 times a week. Most schools at small airports have schools that will give you a courtesy flight or goto aopa.org (google aopa and king schools) and get started. It is such a joy, you will need a health certificate before you solo, your school will give you accredited drs to go to. Get you're vision checked before you do and don't do any alchohal or drugs, because you get piss tested. PM me for more info. Once you're a pilot, you'll be part of an elite club were everyone are friends.
