Happened to me on November 16th. I called them up and explained the problem. They sent a shipping box to me to send my unit back in along with a label. I received a new xbox this past Friday. Pretty satisfied over all with how it went. I think it's my own fault it broke anyway.

Have you heard about the towel trick?  Because you get three years warranty on the three red lights (caused by overheating) people have taken to wrapping their 360 in a towel and purposefully overheating it when there is a different problem not covered by the 3 year warranty.

I've heard it mentioned. In my case I just moved into a new house and had the xbox in a console stand and it was just to hot. I took it out now and placed it behind the flat panel tv. You can't see it. I also placed one of those Intercoolers on it just for safe measure.

Mine went in September, and it wasn't a launch console, either.  I shipped it back to Microsoft and they sent me a brand new one about a month later.

I'm inclined to think the 30% estimates are way too low. Microsoft set aside enough money for the warrenty extension to fix roughly 10 million units (x $100 per repair). Only 13 million have been sold. The overheating is the result of a design flaw. If you have a system made before they changed the design a few months ago (65nm chip/different heatsink/new heatpipe), it will eventually fail.

Happens in everything though if it's not planned properly. We're having huge issues at work regarding the HP G2 servers. They have the Proc's blowing over the power supply which is rated 10 degrees less then the cpu so power supplies are flat out dying.
