Title: Chuck Norris Says The UFC is Boring!
Post by: Mark Kerr on December 14, 2007, 06:45:17 AM
Hahaha! ;D

Legendary martial artist and actor Chuck Norris recently started his own brand of mixed martial arts which he calls the World Combat League. It differs from most current mixed martial arts leagues in that ground fighting is not allowed and much like the IFL, the team concept takes precedence over individual accomplishments.
"It's been an idea for me for 30 years," Norris said. "I had to decide between a film career and the league then. After I finished eight years of 'Walker, Texas Ranger' I started rethinking the league and the team concept."

He also feels that current mma leagues may have grown stale.

"Watching UFC over the last 20 years, when fighters go to the ground, they have become so proficient in avoiding submissions so it becomes boring," Norris said.

"'Knockouts, not tapouts,' is what we say."

I would watch it, a couple of those fights were pretty good. but I have no idea what Chuck's beef with the ground fight is.  Sure everyone likes a knockout but the dynamics of what happens between two good fighters on the ground is awesome to watch. Chuch has never been against the ground fight before, he just needs something to set his new format appart I guess.  It won't be better because it's limited.  With UFC, you get the best of all.

because as long as MMA exists they'll never be an interest in watching a bunch of no names bounce around trying to throw punches at each other

r u kidding me? the crowd thesedays HATES groundwork. thats y the ref pulls them up after 30 seconds, thats y the crowd boos after 20 seconds. the crowd is too impatient.

go back to ufc 4, gracie and severn went on the ground for 15 mins straight, not one boo. full of anticipation, and the climax was amazing. but this is 2007, and people dont want to watch two guys adjusting for position - they want knockouts, which is what norris knows.

I personally like the ground work but I can understand what Chuck is saying. I was watching a UFC fight with some friends once and as soon as it went to the ground they were all like damn here is the boring stuff. I was trying to explain positioning and strategy for groundwork but they were all like I just want to see them beat the crap out of each other. Anyway I think you either have to be into the wrestling/bjj/jjj aspect of it to appreciate it

He says that because he has his own league to promote.  Pure self promotion.

na he is right. i like WCL better than UCF and all that rollin around shit. Punches and kicks to the head are better and more exciting. I hate these fools be on the ground like 3 min...and it looks hella gay..

they should go with the 4 oz mma gloves and no fucking foot pads or flaming pants.  I would watch every WCL if that were the case. Looks like he's trying to bring back american style kickboxing.

Wouldnt be any different than two guys exchanging in UFC, besides the much more advanced standup these guys probably have since they dont train ground fighting = less dilution from cross training and probably more devistating ko's.

Good stuff. I like the UFC and can appreciate the ground fighting. However, Chuck is simply trying to create a league that puts on exciting fights with plenty of knockouts, which is what the American public by and large enjoys in combat sports.

Chuck doesn't "hate" groundfighting. He embraced bjj back in the late 80's and I believe has a black belt from the Machados.

Chuck met Helio Gracie back in the late 80's when he went to Brazil.  Helio actually took Chuck down and put him in a move where Chuck could  not move.  Chuck was so impressed he started taking it.  He later repsected the Gracies so much he would fly them in for his annual karate tournament in Las Vegas each year.  I can't remember exactly how Chuck met Rorian, but I think I might have had something to do with it.  I was taking lessons from Rorian back in 1987 or 88 in his garage.  Way before most of you ever heard the Gracies.  I introduced a guy named Pat Jordan to Rorian which in turn ended up becoming a huge article publsihed in Playboy magazine that Pat did.  That's when the hype started with the Gracies.  Chuck really like the BJJ but he is someone who like the traditional more.  Rorian tried to get jiujitsu into Hollywood.  My friend Craig Kukuk and Royce did a short promo video they sent to the studios and around town.  But most people just didn't see the Hollywood excitement in it.  Rorian finally got it in a movie called Lethal Weapon.  They hired Rorian to help choreograph the fight scenes.  He said he would do it but insisted they used jiu-jitsu.  When you watch the film and Dan Glover says something about using jiu-jitsu, it was Rorian who had them change it.  That got the ball rolling for the Gracies.  Also, putting out an ad challenging all Navy Seals was another very good promotion that put them on the map.

All I know is that Chuck had the Machado brothers on several episodes of his "Walker Texas Ranger" show. They were definitely a big part of his early BJJ training too.

Our very own TIGER SCHULMAN has a new WCL team called (surprise!) the NEW JERSEY TIGERS!

Danny "Tiger" Schulman was my 1st MA instructor about 20 years ago. He held some title called "North American Knockdown Champion" and showed me the video which was basically him running across the mat throwing punches like a flailing robot and pushing the other guy out of bounds, which I guess gave him the 'win'. I was a bit disillusioned, having grown used to Chuck Norris, Steven Seagal style action.

I saw a WCL match and thought it was a bit gay in that it looked so 80's and reminded me of Karate Kid style tournaments.

If the action on the ground is moving and the camera  angles are decent so you can see it, the MMA/UCF format is the ideal. However, I do feel that Chuck has a decent concept that could take off. The old PKA wearing the safety kick and punch gear with guys like Superfoot Bill Wallace were pretty fun to watch.
I do think that the original Gracie idea of "unlimted styles" is what the ULTIMATE fighter is all about.
I also think that the UFC limited rules (and the new WEC) that ban kicking in the balls and stomping on the guy on the ground are good however.
