This is great news. It's a pity he's not directing these films (i wouldn't rule that out yet) but at least now this film is gonna get made at last.
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Director Peter Jackson, New Line Cinema and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc said on Tuesday they have agreed to make two movies based on the book "The Hobbit" by J.R.R. Tolkien, ending months of legal wrangling.
Jackson, the director of the smash hit "Lord of the Rings" movies, and producer Fran Walsh will executive produce both a "Hobbit" movie and a sequel, but no decision has been made about who will direct the films, Bob Shaye and Michael Lynne, co-chairmen and co-CEOs of New Line told Reuters.
MGM Chairman Harry Sloan, who was credited by all parties for bringing about the deal, said Jackson found it "impossible" to direct the film and meet proposed release dates in 2010 and 2011 due to other projects on which he is now working.
"He can't get it scheduled and he doesn't want the fans to have to wait for the next two movies," Sloan said. He said the studios might postpone the films if Jackson changed his mind.
Jackson's representative could not be reached for comment.
Jackson, Walsh and the studios share approval "on all major creative elements" and will start considering screenwriters and directors in January, Shaye said.
The movies will be made simultaneously in New Zealand, starting in 2009. Industry experts estimated the films would each cost $150 million (74.5 million pounds) to $200 million to make, based in part on the $400 million cost of the first three and inflation.
The studios will likely have to negotiate more expensive deals with "Rings" cast members, such as Ian McKellen as Gandalf the wizard, if any of them return for "The Hobbit." But they could save money on special effects that were designed and built for the "Rings" films and could be reused.
'NOT AN OPTION'
Fantasy film "The Hobbit" tells of a world inhabited by wizards, dwarfs, elves and little people called hobbits, who include the central character, Bilbo Baggins.
"The Hobbit" preceded Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings" books, which were made into three hit movies by New Line that grossed roughly $3 billion at global box offices, starting with 2001's "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring."
Jackson and Walsh envisioned the first film covering the events of "The Hobbit" and the second bridging the 80-year gap between that novel and the first "Lord of the Rings" book.
It was that vision that led MGM, which holds the film rights to the book and is looking for new movie franchises, to insist that Jackson and Walsh make the films.
"Once (they) played out their vision for 'The Hobbit' as two movies ... MGM just took the position that we wanted to deal with Peter and it was not an option to do it with anybody else," Sloan said.
Sloan said the studios "would welcome as much of the original cast as possible," adding that "some of them have even said they are interested."
For years, the making of a "Hobbit" movie had been delayed while Jackson and New Line wrangled over profits from the "Rings" films. The director had sued New Line claiming it owed him money. Jackson and New Line have now settled that suit.
The filmmakers set up a Web site, thehobbitblog.com, to keep fans -- who loudly protested the making of "The Hobbit" without Jackson -- apprised of casting and other developments.

Luke Evans Cast As Bard The Bowman In The Hobbit
It seems that Bard will have a significantly bigger role in Peter Jackson's movies than he did in the original novel...
Those who have read The Hobbit will know that Bard The Bowman plays a significant role, despite not really featuring that much in the story. Well now Welsh actor Luke Evans has been cast as Bard, and according to Deadline the character would seem to have been fleshed out a bit for the movies..

Luke Evans has bagged the role of Bard in The Hobbit, a last major part that Peter Jackson hadn't cast in a production that's underway in New Zealand. Bard the Grim is a skilled archer, and the heir of King Girion of Dale. The king was killed by the talking dragon Smaug. The character plays a greater role in the second film, and is somewhat reminiscent of the action-hero exploits of Viggo Mortensen's Aragorn, I'm told.
Evans has had supporting roles in Clash Of The Titans and Robin Hood among other things, and will next be seen as Aramis in The Three Musketeers.

After reporting today that Luke Evans will play Bard in the Peter Jackson-directed The Hobbit and wondering who'll voice the dragon Smaug, Deadline can now tell you that it will be Benedict Cumberbatch. He'll portray Smaug via motion capture. He is already on the picture, providing the voice of the character Necromancer.
So we have this dude on Dragon and Dark Lord duty! Cumberbatch may be a relatively new..and unusual name for many on CBM but the actor is making waves, already nailing down supporting performances in the Steven Spielberg-directed War Horse and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.

Peter Jackson has announced that the beautiful actress who played Kate in Lost has joined his Hobbit cast as an Elf named Tauriel.
Over at his official Facebook page Peter Jackson has released an announcement not only confirming that Luke Evans will play Bard and Benedict Cumberbatch will voice Smaug the Dragon but revealing that Evangeline Lilly has also joined as new character, Tauriel. Jackson also announced that Dame Edna Everage's alter ego Barry Humphries will be playing(via motion capture) and voicing the Goblin King..

Here is another photo from the upcoming Warner Brother movie The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey that once again puts the spot light on the Dwarves. This time take a look at Oin and Gloin.
Yesterday we got our first look at Dwarves Dori, Nori, and Ori for Perter Jackson's upcoming prequel to The Lord Of The Rings, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. Now Yahoo has gotten a hold of a second photo which features Dwarves Oin and Gloin played by John Callen and Peter Hambleton respectively.
Once again we are provided with a description of the two characters:
Distant cousins of Thorin Oakenshield, these two doughty Northern Dwarves join the Company out of a sense of loyalty to their kin, and also because they have a substantial sum of money invested in the venture. Along with Bombur, Gloin is the only other married Dwarf in the Company (there being a shortage of female dwarves in general). His wife is an acclaimed beauty with a particularly fine beard. Gloin is the proud father of a young son, Gimli, who will go on to become part of the famous Fellowship of the Ring.

The Hobbit: Mikael Persbrandt Reveals Scene Involving Beorn The Shapeshifter
The website One Ring has translated an interview the actor conducted with Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet.
And this is what he said about The Hobbit and New Zealand, translated to the best of my ability of course.
”When I, during the first day, is hoisted up to the ceiling in the west King Kong Studio in Wellington I know what to do, even if it is a bit awkward and difficult to begin with a difficult torture scene. I knew and could even suggest things.”
I guess that this could possibly be a hint that Peter Jackson might intend to include the part, where Beorn sort of interrogate a wolf and goblin in order to verify the story told to him by Gandalf, in the film.
“How am I as a shapeshifter, who lives with horses and animals in the forest? You have to look into yourself and try. I act in the Hobbit about the same I would in a love drama.” He says.
Mikael Persbrandt is a very popular actor in Sweden, and he landed the role of the shy, but heroic Beorn. His character is reclusive, hides in the mountains because the rest of his people were killed off by the Orcs. He is an incredibly large man with a dark thick beard, and can transform into a bear.
In the book he never transformed in front of the characters, he just appeared as either a man, or a bear. In this movie Weta Workshop is going to make Beorn's transformation quite the spectacle.
He is approached by Gandalf, Bilbo Baggins, and the 13 Dwarves to aid them in their quest. From the scene above he is convinced of their sincerity, and becomes apart of their group.

Early Details For The World Premiere Of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
The first part of Peter Jackson's much anticipated LOTR prequel may be over a year away, but we now have some info on when An Unexpected Journey will have its world premiere...
According to The One Ring, Peter Jackson's much anticipated film The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, will have its world premiere in late November of 2012 in Wellington, New Zealand (which was the same place where the last Lord Of The Rings film, Return Of The King, had its world premiere). New Zealand news site 3 News has a video showing Jackson's announcing the details on the world premiere with NZ Prime Minister John Key, but since there isn't any embed code for right now, click here to watch the eleven minute video.
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is set to premiere in Wellington in late November 2012, director Sir Peter Jackson and Prime Minister John Key announced today at the Hobbiton set in Waikato. Wellington previously hosted the world premiere of the final Lord of the Rings movie, Return of the King, in December 2003.
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey hits theaters December 14th, 2012, while the second part There & Back Again hits theaters December 13th the following year.

Flight of the Conchords' Bret McKenzie Talks About His Role in The Hobbit
Bret had a small cameo in Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, but this time he'll have a new and bigger role in The Hobbit. Click the jump for details.
Mckenzie, who starred in HBO's Flight of the Conchords with Jemaine Clement, will be making an appearance in Peter Jackson's The Hobbit. If you blinked during 2001's Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring you might've missed Bret's cameo. He played the role of Figwit (Frodo is great ... who is that?). You can check out the cameo in the video below, which has Bret without his trademark beard. When asked by Empire if he was shaving for The Hobbit, he said, "Oh yeah. I look like I’m 12. I look much more like a girl in The Hobbit. I look like a hot girl."

The fine folks over at Collider recently had the opportunity to sprinkle in some questions about Peter Jackson's adaption of the fantasy classic, The Hobbit to actor Benedict Cumberbatch; who will be voicing the dragon Smaug. Here's the brief video and transcript.
Collider: So what’s it like to voice Smaug in The Hobbit?
Cumberbatch: "I’m playing Smaug, I mean I’m physicalizing him as a dragon I’m not just doing the voiceover, so it’ll be a physical role which I’m no stranger to. I did Frankenstein at the beginning of the year with Danny Boyle at the National Theater and playing the creature in that was a very full on and sort of corporeal experience. I can’t wait, but the conversations have yet to start really in earnest because they’ve been doing the first film and I’ve been doing the second series of Sherlock and another series which I’m working on now called Parade’s End for HBO and BBC with Tom Stoppard, and Rebecca Hall co-starring, so it’s a world away but come a month’s time we’ll start conversations probably like you and I are having down the line. I’ve already started working out and doing various movement exercises to get myself limber for that all-important jump suit with balls on it, otherwise known as motion-capture. But I can’t wait, I’m really excited. I go to film it in January."
Hmm. The interesting thing to take away from this interview is that Cumberbatch will not only be voicing Smaug but he'll also be in a motion capture suit, a la Andy Serkis.

Peter Jackson on how The Hobbit differs from The Lord of the Rings:
JACKSON: "The Hobbit is very much a children's book and The Lord of the Rings is something else; it's not really aimed at children at all. I realized the characters of the dwarves are the difference. Their energy and disdain of anything politically correct brings a new kind of spirit to it. And that's why I thought, OK, this could be fun!"
If you though Joss Whedon had it tough spreading screentime amongst his ensemble cast, Peter Jackson has it even tougher. Here, Jackson briefly comments on that challenge:
JACKSON: "That was something I worried about. I imagined 13 guys with long hair and beards and I thought, 'How are we ever going to know which dwarf is which? It's an ensemble from hell really. I thought nine members of the Fellowship was a problem; but here, with Bilbo and Gandalf, we've got 15. It's working out fine though. The dwarves give it a kind of childish, comedic quality that gives us a very different tone from The Lord of the Rings."
Jackson wants audiences to know that despite some differences, he's striving to keep the same feel from the LOTR trilogy:
JACKSON: "I want it to seem like we've gone back on location into Middle-earth; that these two movies feel like they belong at the beginning of the other three. We're the same filmmakers going into the same world."
Talking about original director Guillermo del Toro, Total Film reports that Jackson stated that the "films do retain some aspects del Toro's style and DNA, but that they have largely been overshadowed by Jackson's own attempts to replicate his approach to The Lord of the Rings ten years ago."
Jackson's wife and writing partner Fran Walsh reportedly stated that the second movie will be primarily focused with "war, madness and dragon rage." She explains:
FRAN WALSH: "We always saw The Hobbit more in the golden light of a fairytale. It's more playful. But by the time you get to the end, Tolkien is writing himself into that place where he can begin that epic journey of writing LOTR, which took, as he put it, his life's blood. All those heavier, darker themes which are so prevalent in the later trilogy start to come into play."

HOBBIT: THERE AND BACK AGAIN Dated For Summer 2014; Second Installment Gets New Title
Warner Bros. and MGM Pictures have announced that the third and final film in Peter Jackson's The Hobbit trilogy will be titled The Hobbit: There And Back Again reports Deadline. The threequel is set to be released worldwide on July 18th, 2014; the same day that X-Men: Days of Future Past is scheduled to hit the big screen. The second instalment in the franchise based on the J.R.R. Tolkien novel has been renamed The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and is still set to be released on December 13th, 2013. We're not exactly sure why an official still from the third film has made its way online before something from the second, but we'll take it! This snap definitely confirms a much bigger role for Bard in this series of movies, and it's also very interesting that he shares scenes with Legolas - who obviously journeys on from Mirkwood and will not be making a mere cameo as was expected. First Still From THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG Released
With The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey hitting theaters next week, promotion is already beginning for the other two installments from Peter Jackson's anticipated Middle-earth trilogy. Recently, we saw the first still from the third movie, There And Back Again, which is set to be released in 2014. Now, as previously promised, Entertainment Weekly have debuted the first still from the second part of the series, The Desolation Of Smaug. The site speculate that Martin Freeman's Bilbo Baggins is being frightened by the villainous Smaug (Benedict Cumberbatch). "The dragon is a huge, wonderful, amazing part of the story, but it doesn’t end there," says screenwriter and producer Philippa Boyens regarding the plot of There And Back Again. "Everyone can suspect there’s a rather large battle in film three." Of course, he's referring to the epic Battle of Five Armies.
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is set to hit theaters December 14th; The Desolation Of Smaug will arrive December 13th, 2013; There And Back Again is scheduled to be released July 18th, 2014.

Richard Armitage Teases "The Battle Of Five Armies" In THE HOBBIT: THERE AND BACK AGAIN
The news that The Hobbit was being split into three movies was met with a mixed reaction from fans, but perhaps the best part about the announcement was the fact it meant we will get to see "The Battle of Five Armies" brought to the big screen. It hasn't even been shot yet, but talking to Empire Magazine recently, Richard Armitage had this to say about the battle sequence. "It's been put aside until next year, thankfully," he joked. "It's this big thing looming over us. I'm predicting about ten weeks for the shoot because it's an extensive battle and each character is going to have their 'hero' moment on the battlefield. It's a manic fight in the air - the eagles are fighting bats - and on the ground, and I can't wait to see what Pete does with that." That's right, the battle will see men, elves, dwarves, orcs and eagles all facing off for the future of Middle-Earth! It falls to second unit director Andy Serkis to handle the action, but he isn't letting the pressure get to him. "It's going to be intense beyond belief. It's going to be extraordinary - that's all I can say." The Hobbit: There And Back Again is set to be released on July 18th, 2014.

James McAvoy Wants To Play Gandalf In THE SILMARILLION
It seems James McAvoy is a Tolkien fan. In an interview with Total Film for their latest issue, the Scottish actor - who will reprise the role of Charles Xavier in X-Men: Days Of Future Past - says that he'd like to step into Middle Earth as that most famous of Wizards, Gandalf The Grey, when the mag asked which role he'd most like to tackle when he's finished his current slate. “I’d like to play Gandalf,” said McAvoy, laughing. “It’s called The Silmarillion! It’s a collection of poems and songs that chart the ancient history of Middle-earth. My true geek is coming to the fore, but they’re really, really beautiful stories. In part of that is the genesis of Gandalf, or Mithrandir, or Stormcrow, or any of his many, many names. Anyway, maybe that’s the one!” Of course there are presently no plans to bring the novel to the screen, but if the rest of The Hobbit movies are as successful as the first, who knows.

Martin Freeman Comments Briefly On THE HOBBIT Sequels And The Return Of SHERLOCK
Ever since it was confirmed that Peter Jackson's The Hobbit had been extended to a trilogy, we've known that it would mean the cast would have to return for more filming. Well, talking at the BAFTA's, Martin Freeman commented on how he feels about stepping back into the shoes hairy feet of Bilbo Baggins. "It's a film we've not yet finished. People sort of say, 'How was The Hobbit?' and I'm like, 'I'm still doing it!' I've got to go back in late May for another couple of months. It's going to be part of all our lives for a long time." For those of you worried that Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch's big screen success would mean that the superb BBC series Sherlock would be coming to an end, think again. "We start that next month," he confirmed. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is set to be released on December 13th, 2013. and The Hobbit: There And Back Again will follow shortly after on July 18th, 2014.
