Title: No Music Versus Music During Posing Routines....
Post by: Moosejay on December 18, 2007, 10:36:58 PM
I recall the first show I attended was in 1978...the Mr. Capital District...I was 15 and my father brought me...there were over 100 competitors.

However, it is strange to think that not one entrant posed to music.

Not only did they not pose to music of their own choosing... there wasn't even 'house' music...the kind where everyone would do their routines to the same old tune all night.

That was how it was back then. At least, that was the 'tail-end' of an era in which, at least in local and/or regional shows, you just brought what you had to the stage and hoped to God that the crowd was charitable in their appreciation of your efforts.

I started competing as a teenager in 1980. Still, we did not use our own music (anyone let me know if this was the case in your own instances around this time period).

The first song I ever posed to was 'Eye Of The Tiger' (as well as EVERY other competitor that night!)-from one of the early Rocky movies.

I remember one guy brought 'music' on a cassette tape...it was simply a recording of rousing applause, synchronized to play about every 5-7 seconds...you know...so, he'd hit a pose...his tape would blare-out applause, and, curiosly...the crowd started really going nuts and clapping for this guy (he wasn't in even fair shape, either).

Then, as most know, from this era on, everyone uses music.

I competed in 60 shows. Won two of them outright, along with a class win. Have a total of 17 trophies in all.

So, I did a lot of losing.

Let me tell you, when you can't use music, and the crowd is dead quiet, there is no lonlier man onstage!

Anyone have similar recollections?

Mike

The problem with music in posing routines is that so many of them are poor choices.

If its not numetal, its derivative hiphop or gigantic cliche tracks.

There are some terrible violations.  I think Lee Priest wins for the weirdest bad selections.  Sappy love songs. Put me to sleep why don't you.  I'm trying to maintain an eric!  Sleep afterwards, not before.

When you watch Levrone pose, you have to listen to either Creed or him doing his own best creed impression.

King Kamali has terribly thought out cheesy music that you often find on bass test cds (cds designed with absolutely nothing in mind bar testing out a subwoofer, the thought that goes into these things is ah, minimal, over the top bad samples coupled with pitchshifted comments.. haha).

Now, you cannot be constructive without some suggestions.

So here are my top 3 tracks to pose to:

Peter Gabriel - Steam

Orbital - Satan

Cypress Hill - Dr Greenthumb.

I could see that working.

Its still no match for your Nasser coming down those steps with the halls echoing SATAN SATAN SATAN though.. :)

Personally i think the only music that should be used to pose to is classical or something strong and instrumental. As far as im concerned all the robot dancing and hip hop shit people (try) to do just cheapens bodybuilding. And don't get me started on Kai Greene's "posing".....
Bob Paris was a great poser and i also liked how Dorian used to pose.

i remember years ago watching mtv music awards (i think it was around 1992. must have been around the time of the wbf collapse) watching peter gabriel perform 'steam' live. he was carried though the corridor of the auditorium on a platform like an egyptian god while the song started. two very muscular bbers were carrying the platform on their shoulders. one of them was aaron baker.

baker looked huge and in great shape. this was around the time when he and dave (god damn, i can't remember this guy's last name. he was the 'rockin roll wild child' in the wbf) were grabbing work where ever they could after wbf folded.

i thought, good on them, making the best of a bad situation, but it really is a pity what happened to guys like aaron, right at the start of his pro career. he had tons of potential but after that he just never made it back up the ranks again.

Dearth is back in decent shape (scaled down in size), training people. Baker I am unsure.

Another note:

In the many shows I have promoted, I also hearten competitors to please pick APPROPRIATE songs for the times, crowd, and their physique.

You will often see someone with a decent physique posing to something like : "Zamphir and his Pan Flute".

Totally inappropriate, and boring and a non-match for their physique.

Their explanation for such a shitty choice is that it may have been his and his gal's "favorite song" or something stupid like that.

Bad choices totally ruin their routine AND their placings.

I always say, even if you have maybe an underpar physique, at least choose a populr, recent song that the audience can groove to...at least they will like your song, if not your physique.
