Title: Can you tell where someone is from by their accent?

"Hello, I am an American who is married to an Arab for 15 years. I have studied Arabic, and am an Arabic teacher, and I say that without a doubt, the voice on the clip claiming to be Muh. A. is NOT at all the voice of An Arab, it is very very very obvious. The Arabic language is such that even Arabs have to study the correct pronounciation of the letters in order to pronounce them correctly. The man on this clip says 'ai powt' for aiR poRt, where is the R, . The voice definitely sounds like that of an Israeli. I will send the clip on to some Arabs, for their evaluation. It is clearly NOT an Arab voice. JC"

"Hello, I don't really know Mohammed Atta's voice, but based on what I heard, it is definitely not Egyptian nor Arabic accent. In the Egyptian accent, it is going to be OK will sound like Itti izzi going to be OK, with a lot of vowels added to the words. I would say it is more Israeli Ashkenazi accent than Arabic or Egyptian one. The R is not pronounced correctly, I doubt that you could find one single Arab man who cannot pronounce the R correctly. Israeli people from Ashkenazi origins pronounce the R as Agghh, like in saying baseeder ( OK in Hebrew) they say it baseedagh..the same with airport they pronounce it aighpot..just like in the tape. Also the way he says " no body moves" and " if you try to make any move" sound so not Arabic accent. The way he talks makes you believe he is Israeli or at least was raised in Israeli family not Arabic family. The way an Arab would say that would be " no booddeh movez" and " if you etraye to makeh any move" . I would like to mention that I am an Arab girl, who has studied Hebrew and has been around many Israelis from Sephardi and Ashkenazi origins. I am also very familiar with the different accents of the different Arab countries in Asia and Africa. "

I'm usually pretty good at guessing what part of the country people are from just from listening to them for a couple minutes

Absolutely you can! You can't always tell where a person was born, ...but you can most definitely tell where they were raised, and in certain extremes by whom.

I've heard quite a few egyptian accents and it doesn't sound egyptian at all.  I can kind of pick up a slight israeli accent but no way is it a strong israeli accent.  Would be nice to hear HONEST opinions of other people on what the accent sounds like.  I truely can't say one way or the other.  I would think someone from over there should be able to tell as much as we can tell where someone is from here.

Would you calm the fuck down... What part don't you get about me asking other people's opinions on this.  You come all fucking unglued like I posted a smoking gun ::)  Those were two opinions from the story.  I posted it to have others add their opinions and maybe get some people who have enough knowledge to add.  It's a question and NOT and unreasonable one.  We can usually tell where someone is from in America, how far off is it to ask if the same is possible over there ::)
