Title: Morning Pre-Workout Nutrition
Post by: abc123 on December 30, 2007, 12:35:12 PM
I work out 30 minutes after getting up in the morning.  Can I just drink 50g simple sugars and 50g whey 15 minutes pre-workout (along with a similar drink during my workout) or do I need complex carbs like oatmeal preworkout?  I just feel better with the simple sugars and question whether the complex carbs have time to digest before weight training.  Opinions?

50 grams of carbs is 50 grams of carbs.....as far as how they will effet your training ONCE digested...there is no difference. it doesnt look lik you geting any fats in the morning, so the simple carbs are fine...because the spiked insulin levels have nothing to tell "store" to except for carbs and protien...adn that is fine, as long as you have enough empty glycogen space for the amount of carbs you are taking in.

as for other times of the day...you want to avoid simple carbs as often as possible. but for quick digestion so your blood stream is cleared while our working out...the simple carbs are good.

If you are going 30 minutes after waking up, 50 g. of simple sugars could make you carash in the middle of your workout. That is from my personal experience. Pure Whey when you wake, then drink some BCAA mix (Xtend) while training then Post w/o=Whey and Waxy Maize.

MY AM ROUTINE

WAKE: 6am
-Whey, Waxy Maize and Udo oil

Pre-workout: 7:15 am
-Cellucor M5, ALRi Primed (creatine, no, carnosine and some stimulants)

TRAIN: 7:30-8:30
-Xtend (BCAA drink in 1.5 liters of water)

POST: w/in 10 min. after training
-Whey and Waxy Maize

1 HR. After Post Workout Shake
-Eggs, Oats or any protein and carb combo

I added a shake during my workout (50g of carbs, aminos, etc.) to prevent a blood sugar crash during training.  Then I have my PWO shake after finishing.  I like the results, but I had someone tell my that I should add 1/2 cup of oatmeal to my pre-workout shake.  I'm not sure I see why that is necessary, but am open to change if there is a better way...

Before bedtime...have a decent sized meal. If you go to bed around 11pm then at 10pm have some lean steak meat and some brown rice. Throw some gardinera peppers in it and mix it in one big bowl.

Wake up...pop whatever stimulant you use and in a bottle put 1 scoop of vanilla protein powder(15-20g) and big scoop of vitagro or waxy maize(30g) and 10oz of Gatorade(lemon lime) then 10oz of water shake it up and go train. Drink a little bit of it on the way to the gym and sip on it during your workout.

Some of my best workouts came when I went early morning on empty stomach and buying a Speed Stack when I get to the gym.

yeah you dont really need ot eat ...your glycogen stores shouldnt be that depleted from overnight..since yourbody is actually in a state of naturally induced ketosis everynight while you sleep; so no matter your metabolism you are burning a majority of calories during sleep striaght from bodyfat(or whatever fat you ate before bed).

1/2 c. of oats will not be out of your gut in 30 min. I just personally do not like a lot of food, shakes or whatever in my gut while I train, just me. I feel like a big slosh-bag if I have a full stomach and train. That is why I drink the shake when I wake, an hour before working out. IF I train at night or afternoon, I make sure to have my pre-workout meal done 1 1/2 hours before working out.

Block's suggestion of the evening meal is good advice also. All those startchy carbs should be stored up as glycogen by the time you train in the morning. It is all timing bro and doing what feels best for you.
