Title: Vince G CSN MFT the end of an era?!
Post by: Vince B on January 01, 2008, 03:09:30 AM
Here is a post Melvin Goodrum made to my open letter to him over a year ago. He finally saw the light and claims to have retired the Vince G name. I hope Melvin is sincere. The original post is amusing now that I read it again. It was on the money. Glad to see that Melvin eventually listens to what I say. Maybe it is time he came to Sydney and trained at my gym for a year or so. I could also train him to be a competent instructor so he could earn some money while downunder.

Dear Melvin,

In the spirit of fair play and integrity I am requesting that you cease using the name "Vince" when referring to yourself. I see that your real name is Melvin Goodrum and not Vince. (MELVIN “VINCE” GOODRUM, CSN MFT)

http://www.caliberfitness.com/resources.htm

"When a site has too many Vinces it becomes rather confusing and I must admit that a certain notoriety is now associated with the name that I was born with. You have to understand that there is a long tradition in bodybuilding where the name Vince is one of respect. Vince Gironda was known as the Iron Guru. Then years later Vince Taylor developed one of the best physiques ever. I also won contests and wrote some magazine articles.

To come to this site and discover that you are a 'star' here is interesting. Upon further investigation it appears that many of the lads here are making it a sport to tease and ridicule you. I must admit that images purporting to be recent poses of your physique have become famous on Getbig. I have seen some of your supporters using your images for their avatar and that must amaze you. However, be not fooled by the lads here because I sense that the typical response is one of disbelief that anyone would post such embarrassing photos on a gossip site by way of supporting his standing in bodybuilding. The bombastic display presented has been received with howls of laughter and I confess I was struck with a certain mirth while pondering the pride that only a mother could love. Far be it for me to discourage you or anyone else from self-improvement but I would request that you cease debasing the name "Vince" so that others with that name do not get mistaken for your unique self. When anyone uses the name "Vince" it is clear that they are referring to you. While I salute your capacity for self-promotion I swear you have done this at the expense of honour and have made that name a laughing stock in this sometimes lawless community. If your purpose is to amuse others then accept my humble apologies. If you are earnest and serious then seek some counseling regarding self-image and esteem.

There is nothing wrong with dreaming and aiming high. Sometimes we should let other tongues praise us and desist from conceits that seem to annoy others. I see from your site that you are leaders in human evolution and that you help clients achieve the optimum physique. While that sounds impressive it could just be hype and marketing. I, along with your detractors, would delight is seeing you in contest shape having your hand raised in token of victory on a bodybuilding stage for winning a competition against other decent bodybuilders. Until that time could you please return to calling yourself Melvin Goodrum and desist in despoiling the good name of all the other Vinces out there?"

The nickname Vince comes from my days as a professional wrestler "Venom Vince Versace".  Once you're given a a wrestling name it sticks with you for life.

Your argument for too many Vince's on this board is lame.  Besides I was here first.  If you have a a problem with too many Vince's, then why don't you change your name to something more accurate like "Old Salt" or something like that.  You have way too much free time on your hands, sunshine.

Here is famous Palm Beach from the northern lookout. Sydney has at least 25 beaches like this. The climate here is similar to Northern Florida and part of the reason I left Canada back in 1971.

Good holidays Vince?  Any time off?

Come to think about it Melvin Goodrum deserves his blue stars. Maybe now that he posts under his own name Ron should finally give him those coveted stars. The guy has competed whereas Vince G CSN MFT hasn't done much at all.

Bondi wasn't packed in that photo above. The crowds there can be 3 times what you saw. The northern beaches are quite pleasant and I like the drive up the peninsula in what is surely a subtropical paradise.

I am modifying a Nautilus double chest machine. I got rid of the pec deck function and converted the decline part to cable drive. Talk about a big job. Plus I added some features Arthur never thought about. Like heavier plates on the stack and a handle on the lever to do triceps work on. That is a job I don't care to do again. I have another Nautilus duo chest machine but I can't see myself modifying it. I so hate those %#@%@ chains. That is something Arthur used on machines that gym owners will always hate. Those chains are dirty, they stretch and they can break. Plus they are just awful to service and replace.  I will post a couple of photos of the finished machine soon.  The plastic foot pad broke so I am using a 10 mm solid steel plate covered with 6 mm aluminium. Should look great and this machine should survive anything thrown at it. Would you believe the lads sheared three 3/8 inch bolts on the negative cam!! I have replaced those with three 1/2 inch high tensile bolts. If any human can shear those bolts he can take the machine home with him.

Debussey is forcing others to look after the women he is afraid to date. He is putting pressure on all those guys who have to double up because of those who don't date. Someone has to look after all the lonely women out there.

This is the time of year where women are looking for new partners, what with holidays and NY resolutions. If a guy can't find a woman between now and Valentine's day he really is a sad individual.

DF, move to a warmer climate. Being house-bound for months leads to depression and wasting too much time online.

Look at this guy having fun in the sun and surf. He has no need to hang around a musclehead board all day.

I think mental health people made a mistake when they sent those they couldn't help home! Now we have to deal with their inane thoughts on the net. Some are just beyond helping. I doubt debussey is capable of actually having a discussion with a live human being.

Time for another Goodrum photo.

My Mr Canada trophy needs to be replated. When I get around to it I will have it done in gold so it won't tarnish. No trophy is worth what many have to do to win nowadays. In the old days some took Dianabol and later, others took Deca-durabolin. There was a lot of fear re cancer so no one was too crazy with those drugs. Compare that today with what gh15 says many pros take. Quite a crazy sport. I don't want to even think what some women do to their bodies!

Vince, if you're serious about your mods to the machines why are you using 10mm steel + 6 mm ali for the foot piece?  The cost of buying them individually, joining by welding or tapping for bolts, the time required... surely a 16mm piece of ali treadplate would be strong enough?  If not, use stainless.

If converting from a chain to a cable is a pain, look around for new chains.  The stretch you mention is a design flaw which has almost certainly been corrected by modern day chain makers.  On the other hand, replacing sprockets with pullys can't be that hard, is it?  I'm unfamiliar with the machines tho, so who knows...  Maybe just adding a tensioner bolt at one end of the chain or the other which you could crank down if the chain stretched would be easiest.

What's a negative cam?  Is this something which needs to rotate, and the bolts are the pivot points, one in each piece?  If so, using a bushing might help, or a stainless dowel pin (they come threaded one end as needed).  Sounds like you got this one sorted tho.

The Nautilus machines have small sprockets for chains to go around. When you convert to pulleys you need larger spaces to locate them. I used some 8 inch pulleys so had to make special holders for them.

I used various scrap materials to alter the machine. I have some aluminium plate and had the 10 mm steel lying around. So I used that. I didn't design this machine so have to use what I find around my factory.

The Nautilus duo chest machine was a curiosity. The double chain used in the press never broke but it did wear out the double sprocket it ran around. There wasn't really a negative cam on this machine but there is one on the duo squat machine. Essentially that cam increases resistance as it unwinds and gets closer to the center. The chest cam has a small sprocket bolted to a larger cam beside it. It takes more force to turn the small cam bolted to a larer cam. The chain on the duo squat machines has never been replaced since being installed in my gym. The single half inch chain was a mistake for bodybuilding equipment. Arthur should have used much stronger links, like they have on motor bikes. Perhaps at least 5/8 inch links. Maybe even 3/4 inch links.

Unlubricated chains can rust and often break. Most still stretch. Nautilus used the best quality chains but they still stretched. They are a pain to replace. You never know how many links should be there. The ab-ad machine is a nightmare to replace if the chain is broken. I took 6 hours to get it right. I cursed Arthur several times that day.

Guess Melvin answered my question as to his whereabouts. He is now the Reverend Doctor Melvin Goodrum with a doctorate in metaphysical science. According to Melvin he will have a clinic to help people with things like foot detoxification therapy.

While most of us plod along, Melvin is soaring to new heights.
