Post by: Camel Jockey on January 12, 2008, 05:32:40 PM
I'm thinking of wearing them to a wedding.. hahahaha I mean Larry King is a legend and he always wears them! I hate belts because they make the shirt flare out and stuff.

I've got to grow the backends out for a nice cut. Slicked out and all.

I also need some Hugo Boss and Valentino shirts. Maybe some new silk ties.

They're $40 at century 21. Abd btw, the shirt I'm sporting is Calvin Klien.. decent, but not great.  :-\

And Brooks Brothers is having a clearence, thought they're still pricey and don't sell anything other then their own material.

I'm okay for a 21 year old college dude nearing junior year, benz.

CJ, get pants that have the suspender buttons on them, like Jos. A Banks. Because it looks way better, clip on suspenders are for kids or old men who are too cheap. Don't go that route, other than being laughed at, the clips may slip.

Only Gordon Gekko looks good in braces. Remember that.

Quickly forget about any ideas of wearing those.

You'll look at pictures of yourself in a few years thinking: WTF was I thinking?!!!

Go with the pin stripe shirt and tie though.

That door leads to a corridor that leads to front door of the house, fool. I don't use it so I put a cabinet there.

My room leads to another where my TV is along with a sofa and out of that is the corridor to the other rooms. It's nyc, so what do you expect? It ain't grand but its my house and I'm not ashamed of it.

Saw a really good look the other day.  Guy had pink braces on and had put them through his epaulettes.  Can't remember whether he was wearing a khaki shirt or what.

Nice way to wear them, I thought it was an extremely fashionable statement, I had to look twice.

I so noticed the way in which the braces defined his upper body.  He obviously had huge shoulders and a small waist.  I remember being drawn to his taught nipples which were showing through his shirt (no pockets there), then having to look away.
xL

I remember the colour of his skin and the way in which it completed what he was wearing.  He also had a brilliant smile!

another suggestion:  If you decide to wear suspenders, ditch the tie and open your top 2 buttons.

xL

Less is more, or something like that.  What you gonna do for accessories?  Dangly diamond earrings?               (Girly joke okay....  Just find a matching handkerchief.

ps:  is this the same wedding or another one you're invited to?

Did you already do the find a well-fitting black suit one?  I don't come here often, but I love dressing up for a big occasion as well as helping others to look their best.

...The last wedding I went to I head-butted the bouquet.

The wedding was in some shitty dininghall.

I kept my coat buttoned most of the time, but finally got around to unbuttoning it when I was at the bar.

Conservative group so not much alcohol. I went off to the bar inbetween and came back to walk around and talk to people.. Talked to someone people I hadn't seen or spoken to in a while. Smoked ciggarettes outside with some dudes for the first time in years. I don't smoke tobacco, so it was kinda nice to smoke like I was in highschool or something.

I kinda felt overdressed, but that was the point I think.

I wanna wear tux next with white button braces.  ;D

Brilliant

btw, most wedding receptions nowadays seem to be in dingy halls above restaurants, unless I guess, if you live in CA or FL or the far east, in which case you might do it on the beach (and in which case we'd be discussing entirely different attire...

Anyway, most weddings are held in churches or temples or mosques, so be thankful you didn't have to sit and stand and sit and wait through all of that.  The reception is the best bit.

So glad you ditched the modern clip on braces.  I was gonna suggest that you find proper ones, slightly skinnier, not 2" wide.  They should be 1" wide maximum, so that you can hook your thumbs under them if you feel like doing a swaggeringly posh pose.

You'd do well to scour vintage shops (you could probably even find brand new old ones in the original packaging if you have an aversion to 2nd hand stuff).   Myself, I adore vintage, some of the parties my frocks have been to boggle my mind to imagine, I collect 1950's.

If you don't have a suit with buttons on the inside of the waistband, it's fairly easy to sew them on.

Clip on suspenders are kinda like clip-on bow ties, a no-go area?  Please find proper ones for the next wedding you attend.

As for over-dressing, forget that!  You're just being modest, right?

All you need is a good suit which fits well and then accessories, lots of them!  Cummerbunds are rather fun?  Also very funny.  I was at a wedding reception once where all the blokes were dressed in matching grey tuxedos, pink shirts and purple bow ties and cummerbunds.  They all got drunk and took off the waistbits and danced around wearing them as blindfolds.  Might have been one of those you had to be there things, but anyways...

Just enjoy yourself - and if you look better than everyone else, thank your lucky stars (or your genes - or something).  Dressing up for an occasion is fun and as long as you feel comfortable and confident, people will appreciate the way you look and the fact that you've made an effort on their big day.

I'm gonna attempt to ignore flower although I'm sure we're not supposed to (I really don't enjoy my dis-jointed head attached to a bondage body being splashed about every board, nor do I appreciate the utter horridness of her avatar, ((more venom about another girly, but I reckon that's her point)...  I therefore apologise to CJ for attracting unwanted attention and wrecking your thread.

But irregardless, I will carry on:

I have another suggestion re: men's accessories.  Since you have so few options.  Men get to wear so few lovely things, which is why it's wonderful to be a woman...

>>>Armbands.  Not sure what they're called properly, but I'll look it up if needsbe.  You wear them just above the elbow (which looks amazing on a guy with muscles), to keep your shirt sleeves up.  Apart from my collection of everything from jewelry to stockings, for myself, I also have bought very cheaply when I've found it, at charity shops and antique fairs, a selection of mans gear.

I have a few sets of men's armbands, the best ones are chrome stretchy metal from the 50's.  You can also get elastic ones in mixed colours, of which I have a few too.  They're more work wear than evening wear, I think accountants wore them rather than rolling up their sleeves, but they are a great accessory, fun to wear.

edit:  found them, although you'll need to see if they make them in xLarge? see below...

xL
ps:  I also have a pair of clip-on sock suspenders, still in the box.  Obviously they weren't a big seller.  They're funny and very collectable these days.

Yesterday I bought a fantastic Turnbull & Asser vintage shirt (in my size, I love looking like I'm wearing some bloke's clothes) at Oxfam for £1.  Gorgeous.  It's pink with those double cuffs that you fold back and need nice links for.
