Title: Flyes and Dips:Interesting Chest combo
Post by: Parker on January 13, 2008, 09:43:27 PM
I was looking at my training journal from 2006, and I remember alternating machine flyes with dips as my last two exercises for chest. And I used to get a massive pump. I usually did 4 sets of each, alternating between each set.  Has anybody ever tried this and gotten similar pump?

During a pretty high volume time a few years ago I did incline flys supersetted with Gironda dips and I had great results.  I was pretty much doing 10 x 10 in compound fashion.

If you’re lucky enough to have access to that type of dipping bars, you may want to try Larry Scott’s variation of the move for something different.

Stand between the bars with your back against the point of the “V.”
Place your hands on the handles so that your knuckles are facing inward, rather than away from your body.
Add a little forward lean, and dip.

If/when you’re ready, try extending your feet out in front of your body for added resistance.

I love dips, and I believe that, FOR CHEST, the v-bar is a bit more effective than the parallel variety.

I believe this version is more of an old-school model, which could explain its rarity.

Although if anyone is interested in obtaining one for their home or commercial gym, Larry Scott sells them (or did) on his website.
I remember seeing 2 kinds:
One with “legs” that you can place anywhere, and another that you mount directly onto the wall.

x3.  We have the standard parallel dip bars at Golds in Venice, maybe I can ask if they get some V-bars =)

We have a V bar dipping station as well as a regular.  Probably be best to use regular and keep the elbows in tight if you just did a set of flys though.  That way you hit both heads of the chest.

Never seen a v-bar myself - we've got the regular bars in our gym but they're so damn close to the wall there's been times in the past I've scraped my head of it. Sore.

Flyes super-setted with dips = classic pre-exhaust super-set.

We have a set of V-Bar dipping bars..........not bad,but to do a correct Gironda dip, palms on bars, knucles inward, chin on chest, body in crescent moon shaped position with feet tucked under.

Tried `em,felt really awkward to me.

Knuckles inwards is probably the best version of dips for hitting medial and lateral tris.

Dips and flys together are effective, similar yet different movements in terms of ROM; both are flying motions with dips akin to decline flys.

As long as you lean in you target the chest well, not locking the elbows completely stops tri's a bit more too, if all i could have for a home gym it would be - dip bars + belt and weights and a squat cage with an olympic bar.. all you need. But the diagram of the "Larry Scott" bars left hand side looks the best... the thick handles are much better and seem to change the line of drive through the chest more than the triceps due to the grip.

Sweet thread.

After I did a superset of both, I would periodically go over to a Strech-Station (where they have all diff angles to stretch diff body parts) and stretch my chest, it seemed to help alot in stretching the muscle fascia, because the blood would pool up in one area

i cant beileve u guys never seen a v dip bars at the gym. if you dont have them u could try using the roman chair leg lift  for that. that is what i use at my gym because it is angled out and round not with handles that makes it more convient. i rarely see any bodybuilders doing dips anymore, as a matter of fact lower pecs in general are neglected.

dips really give you a fuller look from the side chest poses and in general.

i do them as the last exersize also. i did not do them for a while because i was afraid they would aggrevate my shoulders. im glad i started doing them again wieghted.

i think its funny watching the pros do dips they move about a inch up and down.

i did those for a while, they put your arms and shoulders in a awkward position. but they are easy to pile the wieght on five plates etc.

Agreed, but you have to be careful on form and weight because of the ackward position.
