I love deadlifts as i really feel it in my back and it is my strongest exercise..........BUT i always get several bruises on both my shins especially when i go heavy (3 to 5 reps).
Its been going on quite a while and i was wondering if that is normal or am i doing the lift wrongly? I am 5'9 and am quite sure that i am lifting right. Should i go to the extend of wearing shin protectors/guards? I don't think bruising on the same spot every week is good for my shin.
or should i should be real HARDCORE and ignore it! ???
-
I have seen some powerlifters put tape on their shins or something
-
Deal with it. You're gonna get bruised if you're lifting heavy and keeping the bar close to your body.
I wish I only had bruises. Bleeding and scarring here, bro.
Get used to it.

You could try not being a little bitch.

Why are you wondering if you are doing it wrong if you are sure you are doing it right?

Well said. But I think "pecs" is concerned about damaging "his" girly physique
-
yeah...i guess it gets even worse for people will are over 6 feet tall. By the way i saw a clip of that castleberry guy deadlifting with a bar and curves away from the body in the middle that avoids contact with the body...but i guess that is too.....non'hardcore? :-*
-
Try doing deadlifts with dumb bells . I do them when I train legs. I dont get bruised shins after doing deadlits with DB's

Exactly.
You could always wear thicker pants, which will help. But reality is, it's still gonna happen. Deal with it.....pretty legs are for women.

welll............i am prepared for shots from you guys.....come on i am just asking you guys. okok i will get used to it......i

I never have problems with my shins on deadlifts - it's when I end up dragging the bar across my knees that it starts to hurt. I love it.

this problem is easily solved by stepping over about a foot to one side or the other so your shins are lined up with smooth parts of the bar, and not the knurling. be sure to alternate sides with each set though. good luck, let us know how it works out!
-
what poundages are we talking about 'pecs' ....how much wieght is causing your leg to bruise ::)
-
I am ok with it, it is just that sometimes my friends will be a little curious with those scars and bruises from middle of the shin up to the knees. Looks like i am muay thai fighter or someting... ;D
-
at least you dont have bruised knees like Squadfather

Why are your "friends" inspecting your legs so closely anyway?

Stepping a foot to one side??? What excatly do you mean?? i know about the smoothe parts of the bar but one foot to the side?? Won't that be unbalanced?

OK...i know all of you are real strong and all.......but not everybody who trains wants to be a wsm or ronnie coleman.....
-
OK...i know all of you are real strong and all.......
Don't get bitter that you have shitty genetics for strength. Dig down deep, work hard, and maybe someday--SOMEDAY--you can deadlift a solid 385 for 5 reps.
::)

have you ever seen a picture of Panda, "pecs"? the guy looks like he lifts the back end of Boeing 737's all day.
-
Actually i have not really seen many people deadlifing real heavy in the flesh... Does EVERYONE here all able to pull 400 plus for 5?? But then again...it is the internet. :-\

come on man 400 for 5 aint even that much more than you say you're pulling, 405 for reps is a good deadlift but it's nothing all that great, the deadlift is something you should be loading on the plates for, you're using your whole damn body.

Hang SF.. I thought Panda is 255 pounds cage fighter and deadlifting his opponents is one of his trademark move?

I am so hardcore, I put barb wire around the bar so it cuts up my shins and blood spills over the place. Pain, blood, guts, dedication, AAARGGGHHHH >:(
-
ask Bluto to borrow "his" kneepads. He probably keeps them in the locker room shower anyways.
-
I would go ahead with the shin guards. When I do deads, I actually workout in a complete catcher's uniform, mask, chest protector and everything.

as much dick as he sucks he just leaves them on all the time, he never knows when the "urge" to devour the penis will strike him.
-
I'd suggest a denim jean jumpsuit just to be safe.

he's been known to train to failure while lifting the Bulgarian skin flute.

are you insinuating that bluto's knees are more "calloused" than a Black Rights essay by Anne Coulter?

BOOOOOOOOOOM!

Exactly.

Funny you said that. Once I was deadlifting in some pretty thick sweats, not for protection.
I was home to visit my parents for Christmas last year and decided to train at home. Dad has a pretty much fully functional gym in the basement. In Western NC it's cold as hell on a late December morning and there's no heat down there, so I was covered up!
I did my workout, didn't go too heavy, only worked up to 500 for some sets of 3 or 5 and didn't think too much about it. I knew I hit my shins more than once, but didn't really regard it as anything unusual.
So, I finish my Deadlift/back workout and went upstairs for breakfast. Mom says "What's on your pants?" I looked down and there was blood coming through the leg of my sweats. When I went to take them off, they had already started to scab up and stick to my leg!
Okay. It sounded better in my head, but I thought it was pretty funny.

I've used that when going for a PR, or really haevy 3s or 5s. I still bled, but it did cake up and keep the blood from making it to my socks!

sevatese should be checking in soon with his expert opinion.......he seems to know just about everything.............. ...unless this is beneath him

Guys, ease up. He may be a beginner, very young or just not as far along as the rest of us.
Now I'm gonna get it.
-
bruising happens - means your form is tight
my left shin started bleeding though my sweat pants during my last session of deadlifts . . .
-
i get cuts..
-
Oh brother, there's a lot of tough guys in this thread all boasting about their "bleeding shins" from deadlifts. ::)
I've been training for 15 years in many gyms in that time and haven't seen a single graze.

go to a powerlifting meet and you'll see plenty of them.

IPF has a rule of knee high socks for this reason. They don't want blood on the bar or platform.
-
use those kneepads that you use when servicing older men
-
don't keep the bar too close dimwit, this aint rocket science..
-
ttt
-
if u care about how ur shins look day to day, while the bruises are still purple and green, or the cuts are still red with hardened blood, then wear shin protectors. if not, good luck to u.

hmmm...bodybuilding requires "blood and guts" afterall.... :)

Just to make it clear....i love deadlifts and will not stop doing. I am just curious on what you guys do to reduce the bruising/scaring/BLEEDING of shins from deadlifts.
And yes, i started deadlifting only about 10months ago. Peace
