I have been listening to every one of your 100 radio broadcasts...and I have enjoyed them all. You started off the 100th with saying that u draw the line of not talking about affairs and wifes and so on concerningthe whole childish milos and nassar story. Bob u said that u draw the line....
then u have one of the greatest bodybuilders off all time on and I guess u dont draw the line anywhere as long as the marrige tragedy is big enough caus u spent a lot of time talking about how his wife shot him.....
now why would you say that u will not talk about wifes having affairs and then go on to talk about a terrible incident like what happend to Oliva. Its bodybuilding talk radio and I think talking about his wife shooting him and fighting cops belongs in the muscle mob program and u should be ashemed to spent olivias time on those topics. u should have tlaked about exercises back in the day ,supplements and old bodybuilding stories!
very dissapointed with the interview, your morals and double standpoint. this is ment as constructive critisism and i hope u read it as that.... I have recomended the show to many and u have many norwegians ordering from your site and listening to your show because off me. so in my opinion you owe me an answer to this.

We all know that they fucked up the Nasser interview. If you're going to have him on then let him speak his mind and have his say.. They just ended up inhibiting Nasser and rehashing the same old stuff instead of encouraging him to say something new and entertaining.

well, i don't really see this as the same.
oliva's wife shot him. it is something very serious that happened to him in the past and he is not currently in a relationship with her.
what nasser is bringing is purely smut and without any class whatsoever. he is thumbing his nose at milos, saying publically, 'i fucked your wife.' with the sole intention of hurting milos and attemtping to disrupt his family (don't forget, milos and milamar are married with children).
this type of thing should never be played out for public knowledge. i mean, what will milos' kids think of all this if/when someone presents this smut to them on the school playground or something?
apart from the pathetic and very desperate attempt at whoring for attention, this event occurred prior to milos and milimar getting married.

There are better Sergio Olivia stories out there than some crazy Puerto Rican bitch popped a cap in his Cuban ass! Anyone and everyone who's been with a Rican ho has/had some kind of domestic drama with them. Shit.
Sergio used to be a cop. A Chicago cop. I know one of his old partners who says he was the dumbest cop the city of Chicago has ever ever seen.
Once Sergio responded to a car be stolen. On the official report he filled out, which, anyone who knows about a police officers job knows that 90% of their day is doing paperwork.
So he made his official report from the witnesses he interviewed and turned it in. It contained 2 words on the run report...2 words.
'car took'.
For YEARS, in jest it hung up in the 16th district and was a running joke for years.

I met Sergio and Arlene in Sydney in 1981. They came to my gym and they came to my home for a party so we spent some time together. After talking to both of them I wondered how long their relationship would last and I told Arlene I doubted it would last very long. They just seemed like chalk and cheese. It was very sad to see how they ended up. I don't know the particulars but I guess their relationship was public knowledge because of Sergio's fame. Arlene was involved in the fitness scene before they were involved. Can you imagine white Arlene bringing big, black Sergio to meet her folk in Georgia! I asked her about that and she eventually said, "They liked him."
Sergio is quite the man and nobody can buy him off. He did his own thing way back then and was literally cheated out of many titles when Arnold challenged him. Conveniently, the IFBB suspended Sergio for several years and this allowed Arnold to win the Olympia ever after while Sergio won just about every other contest around. Sergio was a freak of physique and an amazing individual. Individuals like him are seldom rewarded for their gifts. Lesser, more cunning individuals often succeed when they don't really deserve it. Arnold quickly saw an opportunity in the IFBB where Boyer Coe pointed out the judges were business associates of the Weiders and not bodybuilders or enthusiasts per se. The strategy of Arnold's was to make friends with the judges and in 1980 that paid off handsomely when he won against a close field where any of the top 8 guys could have won.
Those of us who were contemporaries of Sergio hold him in awe. Drugs were around but the guys didn't completely rely on them like they apparently do in the pro ranks today. Larry Scott, Sergio and Arnold had to come up with new training methods to build an even better physique to stay ahead of the opposition. It is a pity that Sergio didn't keep Arthur Jones as a trainer because he was at his very best in the 1972 contest in Germany. Arnold won that year but in Germany would that be a surprise. When you remember that Chris Dickerson was the first black Mr America in 1970 is it any wonder that Arnold won a contest in England in 1970 and again in Germany in 1972. Racism was very evident in those days and a judging panel could be selected to make sure a black champion didn't win. The same thing happened in 1975 in apartheid South Africa where Arnold placed first over Serge Nubret. What a surprise.
Bob Chick always tells me I am out of the loop but he is out of his tree and can't see the forest for the trees. How could any bodybuilding enthusiast not bring out Sergio at his best? Mentioning the Arlene stuff would have stifled anything noble at all from Sergio. What a shame.

Agreed, to bring such a legend on a 'bodybuilding' program and waste the majority of this legends time on non-bodybuilding issues rather than educational aspects such as training, diet, supplementation and old stories that this legend lived through and made.. well.. congrats on the 100th episode I guess. :-[

Bodybuliding needs a lot of "non-bodybuilding related" drama, otherwise all it is is a bunch of oiled-up roid-heads walking around in their underwear. ::)

That's a fair question...and one that I'm glad to respond to. -- Before the show, Sergio was kind enough to send me a copy of his new "Auto-Biography" (co-written by Frank Marchante). Sergio and his co-author asked that we promote the book during the interview by referencing various "Hot Topics" from the book. -- When I turned to page 79 of the book, Sergio tells a very powerful story of the time he was shot in the stomach by his former wife. This was, obviously, a MAJOR event in Sergio's life. That is why Sergio chose to include it in his book. -- At the end of the PBW interview, we simply quoted the excerpt from the book (from page 79) where Sergio openly discusses the incident. (Prior to that portion of the interview, we focused on the Olympia contests of 1967, 68, 69, 70...along with the fallout between Sergio and the federations and his battles with Arnold. We also covered the story of his escape from communist Cuba and his transition from powerlifting to bodybuilding. The new book is called "Sergio Oliva - His Life Story". It reveals far more than we could during a 25 minute radio interview. Before the interview, Sergio made it very clear that he wanted to openly discuss any and all topics. -- As we've learned in recent weeks, everyone has a very different opinion of what they want us to cover on the show. If we had neglected to ask him about this event, you can be sure that people would be asking "Why didn't you ask Sergio about the time...."

Incoherent rambling by the hosts, inane questions that you would most likely find in people magazine, guest that answered questions that were not even asked and then no follow up by the hosts, no sense of direction...I could go on. the point is not that the two incidents are exactly the same....the whole nassar milos thing is in my opinion the most childish arguement I have heared in this sport.and I dont give a shit on whos right or wrong.
the point is bodybuilding and keeping the focus on that....and when they say they draw a line in the sand..have little or noe upfollowing questions on steroid comments by the guests and normally just smoothes things over , they shouldt spend time on a relationship tragedy....they didt spend time on arnold asking him about sleeping around or treathing woman poorly so why do they waste the great Sergio Olivias time and why did they have this wrong focus on the interwiev after stating in the beginning of the show that they draw a line on personal things.....
they present themself as the most professional radioshow and always talk about whats good for the sport....well talking bout thoose personal tragedies with Olivia is not good for the sport...period.

They might know some of the info, but 95 - 98% of people training in gyms does not apply it at all, or applies it only for short periods of time which yields nothing. Practically nobody (perhaps 2 - 5% of people training in the gyms) integrates a proper diet and training regimen into their daily life with the consistency and time frame needed to actually look good and be real strong, yet most people have an idea about what it takes or where to get the information needed. Thus, they don't "have it down" at all.

Well, most of these fuckers that don't apply the basics have this belief that the people out there getting results get it because they have some kind of "secret" or something. Thus, instead of applying the fundamentals on a consistent basis, they spend time listening to PBW, thinking that Sergio can solve their lack of work ethic with his "secrets" :D

Dan pretty much summed it up, but allow me to retort:
There are so many differences between the two, I don't even know where to start...first, were talking about an incident Sergio included in his own book, obviously an important event in HIS life...not an allegation, not a book by his Ex-wife, not a book by someone else.
It was also many,many years ago....his ex wife long gone, not a part of our bb community. Milos is STILL married to MIlimar, part of todays scope of events, and she is an active pro figure competitor. They also have a daughter who is certainly smart enough to access a computer, or overhear a conversation that may arise because of this. Nasser made an allegation, expressed his opinion on said event....there was no question that Sergios wife shot him.
Sergio DOES mention his early days of weightlifting, and his transition to BB.....he also makes mention of using Dbol back in the day and how it's so much different than todays programs...maybe you should listen a little closer next show. Listening to stories of how much chicken they ate and taking liver tablets by the handful doesn't make for interesting radio, now does it?
There isn't a "double standpoint" as you put it...
BTW...not quite sure what your definition of "a lot of time" is...I think you would be quite surprized at how LITTLE time was spent on that actual event. The time was WAS spent, was from SERGIO choosing to elaborate on the question.

There are so many differences between the two, I don't even know where to start...first, were talking about an incident Sergio included in his own book, obviously an important event in HIS life...not an allegation, not a book by his Ex-wife, not a book by someone else.
It was also many,many years ago....his ex wife long gone, not a part of our bb community. Milos is STILL married to MIlimar, part of todays scope of events, and she is an active pro figure competitor. They also have a daughter who is certainly smart enough to access a computer, or overhear a conversation that may arise because of this. Nasser made an allegation, expressed his opinion on said event....there was no question that Sergios wife shot him.
Sergio DOES mention his early days of weightlifting, and his transition to BB.....he also makes mention of using Dbol back in the day and how it's so much different than todays programs...maybe you should listen a little closer next show. Listening to stories of how much chicken they ate and taking liver tablets by the handful doesn't make for interesting radio, now does it?
There isn't a "double standpoint" as you put it...
BTW...not quite sure what your definition of "a lot of time" is...I think you would be quite surprized at how LITTLE time was spent on that actual event. The time was WAS spent, was from SERGIO choosing to elaborate on the question.

my point was that there needs to be a change of focus for the better of bodybuilding and why would you ask the great sergio olivia about this tragic incident.... but Don explained about the book and that sergio wanted to talk about the content more...
as for youre answer....here u have a guy from the other side of the world whos been listening to every one of your shows and telling people about youre web site and the fact that u answer by questioning my hearing ability and not putting into consideration that my point was keeping the focus on whats best for bodybuilding is dissapointing.
a true humble bodybuilder should have answered with entusiasm that hes got fans on the other side of the world and understood the meaning of the post but at the same time explained why the radio show turned out the way it did.

Wrong.
They might know some of the info, but 95 - 98% of people training in gyms does not apply it at all, or applies it only for short periods of time which yields nothing. Practically nobody (perhaps 2 - 5% of people training in the gyms) integrates a proper diet and training regimen into their daily life with the consistency and time frame needed to actually look good and be real strong, yet most people have an idea about what it takes or where to get the information needed. Thus, they don't "have it down" at all.
Well, what is there to say about his diet and training? He ate anything and everything and trained for 3 hours every night.
Sergio was a genetic freak, what he did wont work as well for most. Lots of calories, gallons of milk every day, long workouts and Dianabol, that's about it. :D

To answer 240. Sergio came to Sydney with his wife for a seminar and posing display put on by the association I was involved with. I picked Sergio up from his hotel to bring to the contest he was posing at. The guy was a formidable sight dressed in a red singlet, gold chain and tight black pants. He sure didn't mind bringing attention to himself. I got to talk to him for about 1/2 an hour than evening. When he trained at my gym I got to talk to him a bit but he told me he couldn't concentrate when I was yapping to him. He liked to sip coffee while he was training. While he trained I got to talk to Arlene. Sergio has told me earlier that 'those days were gone' when I asked him about floozies coming onto him at contests, etc. I had to wonder about that because the guy was a chick magnet. Some muscle moles dig huge guys like Sergio.
Arlene was quite open about things and anyone who has met both knows how very different they are. I have a knack of asking direct questions and Arlene didn't mind the conversation. She was an interesting and intelligent woman with strong opinions. If you met them you instantly wondered what they had in common. I could understand Sergio liking her but I wondered what on earth she had in common with him. As many here know racism is part of the culture in America and definitely in the southern states like Georgia. So a woman who is married to a big black man is going to get a lot of attention. To me that marriage didn't seem solid. When it ended I was hardly surprised. That Arlene shot Sergio is sad. Incredibly, Sergio said the occasion was an accident. If I remember correctly he was shot twice in the stomach. Sergio eventually got custody of the children and that is unusual. Unusual circumstances generate unusual solutions.
I have nothing but respect for Sergio. I have little idea why Arlene shot Sergio. It could have been the usual fooling around or something else. Only those two know the truth. I can't imagine a situation where a gun is needed as a solution but that only shows the tension between the couple. To me, their marriage was a trainwreck waiting to happen. That is just my opinion and nothing more. Sergio did very well in bodybuilding and would have done better had English been his native language. He certainly did things his way and that is more than can be said for most people.

This show is a steaming pile of shit to me. As far as I am concerned the only interesting thing was the Nasser interview and Bob was a little rude to Nasser in my opinion. They didn't treat Nasser with enough respect in my opinion and then they had that Boyer nobody on after.
I will not listen again.

I finally listened to the interview and thoroughly enjoyed listening to Sergio again. Amazing that he is still mates with Arnold and has no hard feelings about the results of some controversial contests, etc. Sergio is a bit hard to understand but he is always candid and outspoken. He just says what is on his mind and it is refreshing to hear unprocessed comments from a former champion. Indeed, he is the only Olympia winner to win without a competitor showing up to compete against him.
He lost an AAU Mr America in 1964 to Bob Gajda who he was training with. He quickly learned he was never going to win the Mr America but could win the Most Muscular Man award. That wasn't good enough for Sergio so he eventually enterred the IFBB Mr America. The guys who wanted that title were annoyed that Sergio enterred that show because he was clearly way better than they were. However, Sergio wanted to be Mr America so more or less got an honorary title from the IFBB. I understand how Sergio felt because he wanted to live the American dream and be a success. He could tell he had the best physique in America so wanted that title.
They never got too much info from Sergio about the 72 Mr Olympia but Sergio was clearly superior to Arnold that year. Arnold confessed in my home that he would have won against himself if he had Sergio's physique. That shows that Sergio just showed up for shows and wasn't concerned about things such as suspensions, etc. Sergio is a classic example of what bodybuilders want. That is to compete wherever and against whoever they wish. Seems Lee Priest is getting the same shaft that Sergio received in those days.
I didn't mind hearing about the shooting by Arlene. Goodness me, he ran out of his apartment, down the elevator and to the local hospital, all while being wounded. That is quite a feat and shows what a guy Sergio was.
Thanks PBW for having Sergio on the show. Nice to hear him talking again and being his candid self. We don't see great guys like him any more in the sport.

The fact that you think Boyer Coe is a nobody sort of means you probably dont follow bodybuilding. That guy won almost every title you can win. In the big picture, Nasser is a much bigger nobody than Boyer. Bob can be rude some times. But they do a good job for the most part. Sergio was cool. I was surprised what he said about Bob Hoffman.

The same thing happened in 1975 in apartheid South Africa where Arnold placed first over Serge Nubret. What a surprise.
arnold won fair and square in 1975. look at the footage, the pics. serge was too small, didnt pose well. ferrigno was too undefined and soft. arnold had everything. if theres any contest where arnold was the deserved winner, that was it.

Serge Nubret wouldn't have won in 75 no matter how great he looked. Arnold may well have been better. What can't be disputed is that Pumping Iron didn't feature the contest between Arnold and Serge. Why was that?
