Title: Ambien...has anyone tried it for insomnia?
Post by: Deicide on February 02, 2008, 07:27:58 PM
Based on my research it seems that people alternatively say it's super dangerous or they have gotten the first good night's rest in years from it. Which is it?

Zolpidem Tartrate (Ambien)

If you just have a slight problem sleeping it will work fine. If you are a real insomniac it will make you sleep for 2 or 3 hours and wake right back up.

melatoNin sucks compared to just about ANY pharmaceutical.  Also Ambien CR is better than the straight ambien.

I don't know if I can get my hands on it here. But I can get my hands on Valium (Diazepam).

It seems to be the safer if these are the two options. Plus it is effective as a muscle relaxant.

I don't know. But trying Ambien once is worth a shot. I am familiar with valium and can always go back to it if need be.

For those others who have insomnia here, how the fuck do you work out consistently and well with so little sleep? I mean I find it fucking hard!

I agree. For people with an occasional sleepless night or two melatonin is good. However if you have chronic insomnia as you seem to have or I do, it is worthless.

Melatonin and benadryl work for me in a pinch.  I've noticed that my insomnia is worse in the winter, and almost non-existent when vacationing in a sunny place.  I've been using a light therapy device for 2 weeks now, and I haven't fallen asleep this easy in years.

http://www.amazon.com/NatureBright-SunTouch-Plus-Light-Therapy/dp/B000W8Y7FY/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=hpc&qid=1202014979&sr=8-1

I use it for 30 minutes upon waking.  Took 3 days for me to notice the difference.

I was prescribed ambien when I was also on prednisone.  It was the second time I was going on prednisone, and I was refusing to let them put me back on it because of the insomnia I got from it.  So, they gave me ambien.  It seemed to work fine for me countering the side effects of the prednisone.

Also had it on my second deployment, when the flight surgeons gave it to us to counteract the "go" pills they were also giving us...

Exactly, I would find myself sitting at the kitchen counter stuffing my face. On one occassion I woke one morning to find the kitchen in a shambles and had no memory what so ever of my late night binge.

WTF?  It's like 4:55 here & I am up checking out the latest news on getbig.  Yes, I do have a sleeping problem.  When I find the ultimate solution, I will let you guyz know, k? ;)

My usual remedy is "3" 3mg melatonin (Twinlab is the best) & sometimes 1 or 2 Simply Sleep caps.  If this doesn't work, try some "Sleepytime Extra" Tea.

Hey, great sex helps too!!!!

Makes you drowsy as hell, doesn't really induce REM sleep. Also you are drowsy the next day, forget about getting anything done the next day.

Stuck in Korea as I am I will be lucky if I can get Valium. Hopefully I can get Ambien as well.

Some like to Take it several times daily. Perhaps a bottle or two at once will help?

Your problem is your liberal fantasies are striking discord with the small common sense part of your brain.

I like Val, esp for recovery from brutal exhaustion or muscle spasm, but carefull gettin on a extended run.
The WD's are potentially life threatening.

Moderation is necessary. Powerfull drug.
coming off a long V run, the system will ramp to supercharged Al-Unholy-Hell.
Nuthing to downplay.

I have heard that. I have been taking them for years and if I stop for a day or two I feel weird, don't know how to explain it really, but I hear voices and get bad anxiety. Doubt I will ever stop taking them though, I would probably drink myself to death if I didn't take benzos to unwind.

Why would people think they need harmful pills to fall asleep? They probably just don't know how to relax and calm their minds. Smoke a few bowls about an hour or 2 before bedtime.

Yeah.. I'd say stuff like ambien, valium are pretty harmful. They have their own withdrawl symptoms and can cause memory problems.

Yes.

Benzos are often more abused than other drugs and enhance the effects of stuff like alcohol. Just because they're prescribed doesn't make them safe.

Melatonin's only good for minor sleep aid. The most effective version is liquid Melatonin, but it's less common and harder to find.

Ambien from my experience is milder, more subtle. Basically you have to try each brand of sleeping pill in order to find out what each does for you.

I use 5mg valium somtimes now. Before I used to use them everyday.

I only use them when I really need to sleep. They are kinda good for clearing your mind up before you hit the hay.

Using it like twice a week at 5 mg shouldn't be that bad.. But I guess it varies from person to person.

I suggest trying to sleep naturally. Pills mess with your head.

Most benzos are really the same shit with minor alterations.

like i said via pm dude, you should give trazadone a shot, its an anti-depressant but at low doses is a great sleep aid tht improves quality of sleep unlike ambien that ruins sleep architecture.

remeron would be good too but its extremely strong and has potent anti histamine effects that will cause you to gain weight.

Solid advice.

Something else I can say works for me pretty much 100% of the time is when I get in bed, I focus on putting my body in the ultimate sleeping position, starting with my head/arms down to my feet. I'm out in a matter of minutes.

Don't forget that Valium has metabolites with a half-life of like 200 hours. That's why habituation can develop even with a fairly infrequent administration. Ambien is also a "GABA-ergic" but the half-life is really short. Therefore you aren't messing with the GABA system round the clock.

I think you should mess with the GABA system as little as possible. IMO it's better to go with stuff like Trazadone, Propiomazin (I use this, not habit forming), Hydroxyzine, diphenhydramine or even Remeron before going the benzo route.

But ..You are right about the Ephedrine and Caffiene

Based on my research it seems that people alternatively say it's super dangerous or they have gotten the first good night's rest in years from it. Which is it?

Zolpidem Tartrate (Ambien)

Best for a good live and good sleep.

My son would be crushed and disappointed at me ,If I ever cheated... and he found out .

IMO it's better to go with stuff like Trazadone, Propiomazin (I use this, not habit forming), Hydroxyzine, diphenhydramine or even Remeron before going the benzo route.

you might be thinking of clonazepam but valium certainly doesnt have effects that long, nor does it cause binding for that long. using them twice a week is perfectly fine, i would only be worried about clonazepam or xanax xr, not diazepam.

benzos are gaba a receptors agonists, ambien is a non benzodiazipine gaba b receptor agonist. gabatril might be worth looking in too. all benzos make sleep quality shit. your other advice is solid, but diphenhydramine fucks rem sleep to hell, so only as needed.

No, I'm talking about Diazepam. From Wiki:

Quote
Diazepam is metabolised via oxidative pathways in the liver via the cytochrome P450 enzyme system. It has a biphasic half-life of 1-2 and 2-5 days, and has several pharmacologically active metabolites. The main active metabolite of diazepam is desmethyldiazepam (also known as nordazepam or nordiazepam). Diazepam's other active metabolites include temazepam and oxazepam. These metabolites are conjugated with glucuronide, and are excreted primarily in the urine. Because of these active metabolites, the serum values of diazepam alone are not useful in predicting the effects of the drug.[27][11][29]

Diazepam has a half-life (t1/2α) of 20-50 hours, and desmethyldiazepam has a half-life of 30-200 hours and is considered to be a long acting benzodiazepine.[11]

If you have info to the contrary I'm all ears.

Diazepam itself has a half-life of up to 50 hours. That's long, and even if not taken every day you are never cleaning out completely and giving the GABA receptors a rest.

sorry i was thinking lorazepam(ativan). your right, diazepam is a longer acting hypnotic, anxiolytic agent like klonopin.

thanks for the correction mutterfuck.
