Lesnar impresses, but loses UFC debut
By Kevin Iole

Saturday, Feb 2, 2008 11:55 pm EST

LAS VEGAS — Brock Lesnar was everything he was purported to be in his UFC debut.

Unfortunately for the former WWE star, Frank Mir was, too. Mir, the ex-UFC heavyweight champ whose career was nearly derailed by a 2004 motorcyle accident, survived an early pounding to submit Lesnar at 1:30 of the first round Saturday at the Mandalay Bay Events Center.

Lesnar, a college wrestling national champion, easily took Mir down twice in the early going and was pounding away with fists and elbows to the grounded Mir. But Mir worked for submissions and eventually worked into a knee bar that forced Lesnar to tap out.

Mir had failed twice to get an arm bar on Lesnar, whose massive arms made it difficult.

"His legs were leaner, so I went for those," Mir said.

Lesnar took Mir down only 10 seconds into the fight and it looked for a second as if the bout might end early. Lesnar was in Mir's guard and pounding away, but punched Mir in the back of the head, a foul that cost him a point.

As soon as the bout resumed, Lesnar took him down again and began to repeat the pummeling.

"It feels spectacular, because I had Brock Lesnar dropping elbows on my head and I still pulled through that and got a submission," Mir said.

The end came as Mir failed to get an arm bar on Lesnar. Lesnar tried to move away and Mir snatched his ankle and quickly slapped on the knee bar. Lesnar had to tap very quickly.

In only his second mixed martial arts bout, Lesnar took on the challenge of one of the top fighters in the world. He said he would continue to fight.

"I came out trying to pressure Frank (because) I questioned his heart," Lesnar said. "I was just trying to get a bunch of shots in there and I left my leg out there. He's a top-notch jiu-jitsu guy and he got me tonight. He's the better fighter."

sportsmanship is for women and children. He's lucky Brock didn't eat his children.

Brock can do great things. He needsmore experience. He needs more mistakes to learn from. Today he will become greater. Even though he lost it's a great day for him. He dropped Mir. He took him down. He did good. He's still legit as a threat. Don't count him out. He's a mean guy.

This is why UFC fighting is peaked out. A perfectly good ass kicking gets stopped by a leg twist. Someone please bring back heavy weight boxing!!!

A perfectly good ass kicker won't be stopped by a leg twist.  ::)

Now the question is whether Brock can adapt to UFC....how old s he now?

That was pretty racist. So what you are a Holding Keys to Vacaville for the AB or NLR??? Or let me guess you are some pretty white kid in some suburb somewhere? Better yet they call you Killer from Big Bear?

From a typical spectator point of view. I would have been pissed to pay to see that.

I paid, and I was pretty pissed, but I got over it.  Brock might be good if he can get his head into it. Nog Sylvia wasn't too bad, although it is beyond me how that hillbilly became the champ.

all in all,  Not the worst way to spend a Saturday evening.

Brock was too impatient............... glad to see Frank win.

and for the guys that think that submissions are lame, be happy there was a ref there to stop it, or Brocks career would prob be over for a bit. ;D

Exactly, he put Mir down twice in less than a minute and a half...then stepped in some shit. ;D

He definately needs to learn how to punch right, those rapidfire hammer fists aren't going to cut it, if he could punch right he probably could have ended that fight.

Thats BS and you know it Bhuddo. Mir was dead in the water and even he knew it, you could tell after the fight when he was descrbing the fight to Rogain, saying"Look at that beast". Brock stepped right into that leg hold, he was owning Mir before that. Props to Mir though, he knew within 5 seconds of the fight there was no way he could stand toe to toe with Lesner, so he took him out the way he knew he could.

That's a "lame" excuse .. Mir wasn't dead in the water .. In the all access,he made it perfectly clear that ,he had no idea how he could get Brock down..He's a Jiu Jitsu guy... He waited and it came to him..Stop being a hater !

I guess laying on his back and getting pounded in the head was all part of his plan to, I gave Mir props, he won didn't he? Give Brock some more time to get accustomed to all those different fighting styles, he'll be fine. I'm sure Mir will skip training and lose his next one anyway

Mir did what he knows how to do, but Brock's inexperience put his leg into that leglock, up to that point Brock was pwning Mir all over. In fact if you watch again, the second time Mir goes down is from a right hand by Brock...

but.....time will tell, I think he was too excited and needs to stay calm in the ring.

Thanks to Mir I earned an easy 100 bucks! Lesnar had me worried for a split sec but I knew he'd get caught. He almost got armbarred twice when he was raining down hammerfists! Skill and technique will always trump brute strength! That's JIU JITSU for you bitches!

JIU JITSU my ass! Watch the fight again, when the ref went in and broke the two up, he was actually going in to stop the fight because Mir wasn't defending himself. Then when he got in close Mir starts to get his hands up, so he breaks them up with the blow to the back of the head. No warning for that either, just takes a point away which is unheard of, especially for a rookie. Watch it again, see what you think.

Frank can take some shots. Lesnar was raining down blows on him but frank kept his composure and kept working submissions until he managed to lock in on Lesnar leg. Very nice display of jiu jitsu.

Brock on the other hand displayed his speed and wrestling skills.  Very fast takedown in the first 10 secs. His punches need to be fine tuned. Given time and experience he may become a force to be reckoned with.

I would imagine lighting in those places aren't very flattering to begin with since it's for television; I just believe she really is that good-looking for her age.
