CBS) An American businesswoman was carted off to jail by religious police in Saudi Arabia for sitting with a male colleague at a Starbucks in Riyadh, the Times of London reported.
The woman, who spent a day behind bars, was strip-searched and forced to sign a false confession before being released, the newspaper said. The Times declined to publish her name at her request.
The 37-year-old businesswoman works for a finance company in Riyadh. Her problem began when her office lost electricity. She and her male colleagues then went to a nearby Starbucks to use the coffee shop's Internet connection.
She sat with a male colleague in the Starbucks' family area, the only place women are allowed to sit with men.
“Some men came up to us with very long beards and white dresses. They asked 'Why are you here together?' I explained about the power being out in our office. They got very angry and told me what I was doing was a great sin,” she told the Times.
Following her arrest and interrogation, the woman was hauled before a judge.
“He said 'You are sinful and you are going to burn in hell.' I told him I was sorry. I was very submissive. I had given up. I felt hopeless,” she told the Times.
The newspaper said the woman had received a visit from officials at the U.S. embassy in Saudi Arabia. A U.S. official told The Times that it was being treated as “an internal Saudi matter” and refused to comment on her case.
So now non muslim women are fair game now? She was seated in the right area - WTF?

What sucks more are our laws which are two far the other way. We all know it sucks in Saudi, and western women are likely to run into crap exactly like this over there, right? Okay then, wouldn't it make sense for our companies not to send women over there in the first place? ::) Of course it does, but our companies are prevented from using common sense in a case like this, because they're all afraid of getting sued for discrimination by the feminazis over here! They can't even so much as SAY, "we've got an opening over in Saudi, but given how fuccked up it is for women over there, we'd prefer to send a man", for fear of being sued. How fuccked up is that?

C'mon even feminists can't be that stupid in insisting that women should get saudi posting. But then again maybe the feminist agenda is more important than safety.

You wanna bet? There's no exception in the employment discrimination law to cover circumstances like these, and lawyers are all about suing and making money, not common sense.

I suppose not. But would any sane woman choose to work there given the amount of "evidence" that can be compiled against them at a moments notice? This particular woman was not muslim. She was seated in an area that allowed men and women. She had a valid excuse for being there. I dont see why they would make such a big issue out of this. Its probably the "make an example out of the infidel" law.
i think Dubai is more relaxed with the Islam ruleset.

When in Rome, You do as the the Romans do.
Why should she expect any different? Saudi Arabia is and has been the Republicans best friend. All you conservatives bemoaned by this, hypocritically support it by voting as such.
And why should ye old Conservatives care? You treat women horribly anyway and think them second class.
You closeted fellows betwixt me.

As long as they know the risks it should be their choice whether they go or not. It should be none of the companies business.

US is willing to sacrifice a lot to be on the good-side of a nation which is the world's largest oil producer, even if it includes failing to even question certain key figures in relation to the 9/11 attacks...so you can definitely bet that they wouldn't give a rat's ass if their citizens felt humiliated by the Saudi gov't.
