Title: the Original and the Remakes
Post by: BayGBM on February 11, 2008, 05:44:48 PM
That Thomas Crown Affair movie got me thinking about some other films and the remakes I have seen.  Is there a guide to original films and their remakes anywhere online?  Have you seen all these?

All That Heaven Allows 1955
Ali: Fear Eats the Soul 1974
Far From Heaven 2002

Dial M for Murder 1954
A Perfect Murder 1998

An Imitation of Life 1934
An Imitation of Life 1959

Ocean’s 11 1960
Ocean’s 11 2001

The Omega Man 1971
I Am Legand 2007

The Omen 1976  (a better original)
The Omen 666 2006

Thomas Crown Affair 1968
Thomas Crown Affair 1999

The Star Chamber 1983
The Star Chamber 2009 (forthcoming)

Colossus: The Forbin Project 1970
Colossus 2009 (forthcoming)

Can you recommend some more films with even better remakes?  Please do not include bad remakes like Psycho (1998) or made-for-TV remakes like Carrie (2002) or I Want to Live (1983); I'm looking for good feature film remakes.

Thanks. I'd forgotten about Cape Fear. Both editions of that were good.  That was a puny list though... they didn't even include some in my list above. :-\

Most of you have heard of or seen Matt Damon’s portrayal of Tom Ripley, but have any of you seen the other appearances of this character?  I hear Ripley’s Game is the best of the five.  It’s in my Netflix queue now.  :)

"Purple Noon" with Alain Delon (1960)
"The American Friend" with Dennis Hopper (1977)
"The Talented Mr. Ripley" with Matt Damon (1999)
"Ripley's Game" with John Malkovich  (2002)
"Ripley Under Ground" with Barry Pepper (2005)

"The manchurian candidizzle" is also a remake.
"Alfie" as well.
"Planet of the apes".

Seen neither of those.

Here some more: http://www.moviefreak.com/features/remakes.htm

An interesting comparison would be:

"Abre los ojos" -> Film by spanish genius Almodovar
"Vanilly Sky" -> Hollywood remake

I've seen both. I kinda like the Spanish version better. Penelope Cruz and her hot titties are in both films.

I just watched The Hitcher with Sophia Bush and Sean Bean(2007) which was probably better than the 1986 The Hitcher(C. Thomas Howell).

Really? I kinda enjoyed the original a lil' more. But the remake was good.

Well, its been like 20 years since I saw the original, but the new one was pretty good, I liked the Hitcher man, he was pretty tough.

A couple of originals that were much better:

The Vanishing - the original was brilliant and creepy as hell.

Brothers - Things We Lost in the Fire (Halle Berry, Benecio del Toro)  The remake was good, but the original, gut-wrenching.

Wings of Desire - City of Angels

Other good (decent) remakes -

Dracula

A Perfect Murder

Breathless

Twelve Monkeys

Remakes are made with today's inferior attention spans in mind.

someone mentioned the 'THE THING' good remake with kurt russell, john carpenters 'the fog" was good remake was bad.planet of the apes was said to be reimagining of the original paled in comparision to original.u could never do terminator redo because arnold was the face of that franchise.same with sequels if the star takes off from the movie finacially or popularity wise then don't recast, dumb move and don't wait 2 to 3 yrs to get the sequel out cause nowadays people forget or move on and wait to see it on dvd anyway.as watered down the sequels got at least freddy, jason, myers were shoved back in the theatres every year or so to keep story somewahat alive, toaday with production cost, star costs, and special effects making movie isn;t so simple ..
