“I’m off to Tokyo! A big announcement will come straight from Japan tomorrow (February 13). When the official part is done I’ll be able to provide more information about everything, and believe me, I have many things to say. What you could easily guess by now is that I won’t be retiring. I’ll keep on fighting, it’s my life, it’s what I do.”
If he's gonna continue fighting in the UFC why would he leave for Japan to make a big announcement?
Sounds to me he's leaving to sign up with some other organization.

The Ufc tried to lower his pay. Dana White shouldn't say anything about Randy Couture leaving, and Randy wanting out of his contract. Once a contract is signed, both parties should honor it. You don't see Dana and The Ufc trying to cut Liddell's pay when he lost twice. This makes The Ufc look bad.
-
A terrible repercussion of this is that it will appear as though cro cop got his ass kicked in UFC and fled. He did lose two of his three fights but so did Liddell.

Couture lost twice, and retired, then came back.

"Update: Dave Meltzer from WrestlingObserver.com is passing along news that Cro Cop could announce that he will fight for a new promotion created by the owners of K-1. We’ll be all over this when the official word comes in. "
great lets spread out all the fighters into a half dozen organisations so nobody fight nobody ::)

There a lot of unsigned fighters out there. Gomi and Randleman have already signed with this new organization.

Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic, will no longer compete inside the Octagon, signing an undisclosed contract with the newly-minted DREAM promotion, according to Nokaut.com.
He will fight on March 15 against a yet to be named opponent. Lightweights J.Z. Calvan and Shinya Aoki will also fight on the card — it was the only other match announced for the debut show, according to WrestlingObserver.com.
The Croatian still had two fights remaining on a UFC contract that he signed with much fanfare and high expectations toward the tail end of 2006. No details were provided regarding how or the reason he was released from his contract.
However, speculation has swirled that after two losses in three fights the UFC was not willing to pay him the base $350,000 to compete on under card matches (he more than likely pocketed more than that.)
Dave Meltzer indicated in the print edition of the Wrestling Observer newsletter recently that UFC officials were trying to negotiate a new deal that would pay him less … perhaps the “deadline” UFC President Dana White mentioned earlier this month.
DREAM is a new collaborative effort between FEG (K-1, HERO’S) and former Dream Stage Entertainment staff (Pride), according to the announcement. Cro Cop was a star in K-1 prior to becoming a star on Pride FC. And he’s still extremely popular in Japan.
He’ll look to regain his old form; however, unless Cro Cop returns to the UFC before he retires he might always be remembered, at least here in the states, for what he didn’t do in the Octagon rather than what he accomplished outside of it.

well well crocop couldnt handle fighting in ufc, the worlds greatest organization so now he leaves to fight some chumps in japan where he can be full of steroids...

So Dana White signs Mirko to a six fight deal, Mirko loses a couple of fights in the UFC, and now Dana demands that Mirko take less than the agreed upon compensation or he is gone, or on the bench. And you claim that Mirko is the one who is "running away" from the UFC and not "honoring" his contract? LMAO. The logic of Zuffa huggers is amazing. ::)

I don't know what his contract says. Neither do you I assume. I bet they have the right to change terms if he lose 5 outta 6 fights or whatever. Just like a record company have the right to drop an artist if he puts out 3 records in a row that dont sell. Aint nothing strange with that.
If crocop delivers - he get paid. If he dont then he wont.
Problem is entirely crocops for sucking in the UFC and not delivering. The UFC gave him a great contract, great exposure, put him up against Eddie Sanchez his first fight (much better and easier fight than for example Lesnar starting against Mir, or Soku starting against Machida...)
So knowing this, it's impossible for me to take crocops side on this and blame ufc... he fucked up, plain and simple.

i hate to do this but i agree with bluto on this one :(

If your boss sat you down and said, Bluto, you are currently making $25.00 per hour. If you would like to stay here, you will have to take a pay cut, we will pay $5.25 per hour. Are you going to stay working for that employer? No, you will find a new job.

Try comparing it this way
"Bluto, you were known as on of the top sellers in the industry, we managed to take you from the rival company, however since you been working for us you dont sell shit, and you also been home sick most of the time! im afraid you will have to take a pay cut!"
:D

who doesnt honor the contract? if its in the contract that the company can lower the payment if the fighter doesnt deliver the goods.
ufc wanted one of the top fighters in the world, so they gave him everything.
he in turn turned out to suck balls and is no where near the top fighter in the world.
is that ufcs fault? ::)

i just dont understand why all the negativity towards 2 guys specially...Fedor and CroCop...Fedor used to be praised here more than jesus christ or nasser, and now everyone shits on him...
Maybe its the tuf generation or the brainwashed UFC fans doing this....After all, Couture was UFC´s God, and now suddenly, after he left the organization, it seems that all his getbig 'fans' hate the guy...
and on top of this, there is Dana...a complete f*ck that is talked more than the fighters itself....wtf is this?
not saying that im right, just a impression that i have...
the sport might be getting more professionalized, but its loosing all the 'aura' and fun it used to had (and im talking even UFC older days...)
i think i will start to see just the old guys like Aerts and Sefo fighting on K1...
-

So true, before it was hey, lets go bang, get paid and make each other money. Now it's you need to make me money cause I got you there when it was a combined effort the entire time. If Dana didn't put on the show AND if the fighters didn't show up to put out we would have a fluke all together so it goes both ways for sure...
Money, power and greed change just about everyone...enough said
-
its a contract, dana needs to pay him what they agreed upon, mirko needs to finish his fights, if they need to put up against a scrub next to help him regain his form then do it, then give him a rematch against say gonzaga, if he wins that then give him a chance for the belt next, that would make everybody happy, but thats just my opininon, im sure there is a lot more that went into this
-
A contract is a contract, both parties should honor it.
You don't know if the details of the contract included a provision for reduced compensation as a function of poor performance. If you think about it, it probably did. I highly doubt that the UFC would simply renege on a contract and Cro-Cop would accept it without taking it to court.
-
IMO, CroCop = BITCH...
Why would anyone else want to hire him after such a dissapointing run in the UFC... hell, people are laughing at him and he still thinks he's worth something !??
he hid his tail between his legs, settled with Dana and ran. I think it's time for him to give it up, he's screwed either way, he'll never recover from those emberassing defeats in the octagon. Even if he starts winning in DREAM people will say he's ducking real competition and fighting cans, if he keeps losing people will say he's done and should retire before any more embarassment happens. Either way it's a no-win situation for Mirko.
-
I think the pay cut provisions were in the contract that Mirko signed. I'm sure his lawyers went over the contract details with him. The problem was no one foresaw that Mirko would struggle against B/C list oppponents. Everyone - including the UFC probably assumed he would be HW champ in no time given his past performances. things didnt quite work out that way. I think Mirko got overconfident and didnt train as much to adapt to the cage.

He can start juicing again and fighting in Japan, I was on the fence with this guy until I watched his fights in the UFC, then what I saw was a huge disappointment, I was expecting more and was let down.........if he gets on the sauce again, maybe he will make some morre highlight reels.
-
mirko lost 2 out of 3 at ufc.
if he still had the passion for fighting that he used to, he would have taken the cut, gone back to the gym and came back more dominant than ever.
when a fighter puts money before legacy/pride it's a very telling sign. when the pressure's on against a top flight hungry opponent and it comes down to heart, mirko's going to give out first.
with the new org he will fight tomato cans for pay until he retires.

Bingo!
-
at leat at one thing i agree with you guys...Even if CroCop was offered less money because of his losses, because of his potential and quality as a fighter, him at 70% could absolutely destroy any hw in UFC (maybe just not Minotauro...)
For me, as a fan, im really dissapointed too...i would like to see him at least get the belt before left the ufc...I was even thinking they could not waiste time, and just do a one night GP with Mirko fighting everyone and going home with the belt !! lol...how i was wrong... :-[
But once again, im talking about a fighter who fights to prove he is the best (wich he did in 2006), and not JUST because of money
With Fedor its a completely different game, giving the fact i dont see he running away from anyone...he just didnt signed with UFC but probably the chances of the Couture fight happen is bigger now (wich for him is the ONLY guy there who worth fighting with)

Why would anyone take a pay cut? Just to prove to a bunch of "keyboard warriors" as yourself he can fight? We all know what a focused Cro Cop can do, he fought and beat some of the best fighters in the world. Dana White let him go back to Japan. Dana said if he wins his next 3 fights, he has to return to The UFC to finish his contract.

Exactly. His legacy was solidified with the OWGP run. Just because the resident MMA all-stars on Getbig aren't fans of the guy, doesn't mean jack shit to him. It's all about the cheddah baby.

That argument about legacy/pride over money would hold a lot more water if Rampage wasn't the LHW belt holder and always talking about how he does it for the money. ;)

"I can perfectly understand a decreased interest in me after my bad performances. It's just business and you can't blame the UFC or Mr. White for putting me aside. I can only say that Mr. White acted very professional and I had no problem in getting released from my UFC contract. I also hope that we'll always respect each other and perhaps work together in the future." - crocop

What a cool guy.
He blames no one but himself.
-
yes and especially cool that he share the same opinion i had and posted here: that is ufc cant be blamed and what they did is understandable.

It work out the best for both parties. Dana White said if he wins his next three fights, he has to return to the Ufc to finish the remainder of his contract.

no one that just fights for the money has ever become a champion...NO ONE.
if you don't truly love fighting you can't possibly reach the top. you will get found out early on in your career by someone who has got the passion.
cro-cop early in his career would have taken the cut, trained his ass off, levelled the score and got paid his due again. taking a backward step ie going back to lower class fighters is not the actions of a passionate fighter or a hungry fighter.
-
from my understanding of ufc contracts they were performance based w/clauses that allowed for evaluation of performance. this is type contracts that is used w/ most org. hell wcw had 30 day evaluation reviews which were based on performance,tv ratings and fan base etc. you think ufc/Dana is bad wcw was unbelievable. talking about no job security. you could have long term contract for tons of money and have couple bad ratings or string of injuries and they sent you walking. i know its true cause i worked w/ alot of those guys when i was in Atl.
so this is nothing new w/regards to contracts, CroCop knew this. i think he just wanted a way out to go somewhere else.
the drug testing here US has affected alot of the guys that came over to the ufc, regardless of what some think, its a big deal. when you accustom to training and preparing a certain way for many yrs its hard to stay at the top of your game when factors are taken away, mentally and physical. bottom line people don't like the change from a routine.

what makes you say he fought for the money?
E
-
of course fighters want to get paid well, but my point is, you don't become a champion and stay that way unless you have a real passion for your work.
mirko got his ass handed to him by 2 fighters that he will not face again any time soon, because he's running away to another fed.
put it this way, when couture got beat by tito or chuck, what was the first burning desire he had? to rectify the situation or at least be given the chance to, because he's a competitor first and foremost.
mirko knows very well that if he came back with the pay cut and rebuilt himself, he would get the high purses again.
by running off to another fed everyone knows (not just people on this board) that it doesn't matter who he fights at dream, the guys at ufc own him.
no passionate champion would leave that hanging over their head.
-

Moorer never really got credit for being one of the best Light heavies in a long time because he fought with a WBO title around his waist which kind of kept him out of the mainstream......
Mirko's damaged goods at this point and any new organization that signs him is signing his name more than anything else....
good move on dana's part to let the guy go

mirko's assets have always been based on his striking power and athleticism (speed, agility, movement).
this type of limited dimensional fighter is not made for longevity like a multi dimensional couture, nog or fedor.
father time has caught up with mirko and he's deluded by his own ego and vanity at this point.

maybe crocop should go back to k-1
but then again, maybe not, he couldnt finish kongo even

You should look at the other way around. Kongo couldn't finish a guy that had 2 broken ribs, and had been repeatedly kneed in the balls.
That says alot about Kongo. ;)

People expect more from Crocop than Kongo. So they will judge him much harder.

with the big name and pay checks come responsibilities.
kongo is nowhere close to that status and he talks shit like jackson, which means he'll have to work extra hard to make money.

what makes you say he fought for the money?
E
Listen to some of his interviews from around the time he was fighting, on several occasions he stated that he was in it 'just for the money' and wanted to retire after a few 'big fights' and that he had no intention of ending up like some of those old brain dead boxers who suffered too many concussion and still kept trying at it. He had a very definite timeframe for his pro fighting career, something like 3-4 years.

true
every fighter plans to get out before it's too late, but when they try to retire it dawns on them that they don't know how to do anything else. they've been training and fighting so long that it's completely out of their comfort zone to get a normal job.
one more fight becomes too many fights.
