Title: Bodybuildings 30 biggest lies
Post by: dantelis on February 22, 2008, 01:37:18 PM
Good list.  #7 is the one that the bodybuilding magazine publishers rely on.  No one would ever buy the magazines if people didn't believe that they could get the same physique as the pros by copying their routines.

Got to love #22 — Professional bodybuilders represent the epitome of health and fitness.  That's another myth the mags take advantage of.  It used to be true back in the Reeves, Grimek, Park era.  Certainly isn't now.  (Anyone have the Ronnie Coleman sucking the oxygen tank at the Olympia picture?  That ain't fit or healthy.)

Another myth:  you can become a pro bodybuilder without posing nude for the Weiders.  Anyone got more to add?   ;D

http://gain-muscle-now.com/bodybuildingmyths/bodybuildings-30-biggest-lies (http://gain-muscle-now.com/bodybuildingmyths/bodybuildings-30-biggest-lies)

1 — You can get as big as a pro bodybuilder without taking steroids; it just takes longer.
2 — In order to get really big, you have to eat a super-high-calorie diet.
3 – If you eat a low-fat diet, it doesn’t matter how many calories you take in, you won’t gain any fat.
4 — The more you work out, the more you’ll grow.
5 — The longer you work out, the better.
6 – You don’t have to be strong to be big.
7 — The training programmes that work best for pro bodybuilders are best for everyone.
8 — You can’t build muscle on a sub-maintenance calorie intake diet.
9 — You can’t grow if you only work each body part once a week.
10 — You can’t make gains if you only train with weights three days a week.
11 — You should only rest 45 seconds in between sets.
12 — You have to use fancy weightlifting equipment in order to make the best gains.
13 — Weight training makes you big; aerobic exercise cuts you up.
14 — You can completely reshape a muscle by doing isolation exercises.
15 — If you get a pump , you’re working the muscles adequately to ensure muscular hypertrophy, or if your muscles are burning, that means you are promoting muscle growth.
16 — If you do hundreds of sit-ups a day, you will eventually achieve a narrow, washboard-type midsection.
17 — Training like a powerlifter –deadlifts, heavy squats, bench presses–will make your physique look blocky.
18 — High repetitions make your muscles harder and more cut up.
19 – Instinctive training is the best way to promote gains.
20 — Women need to train differently than men.
21 — There are food supplements available that are just as effective as steroids, yet safer. 22 — Professional bodybuilders represent the epitome of health and fitness.
23 — Training with weights causes your muscles to get tight and hinders flexibility and, consequently, athletic performance.
24 — Loading up on carbohydrates is an excellent way to enhance your athletic performance.
25 — Consuming foods high in sugar before training provides your body with extra energy to sustain workouts.
26 — All anabolic steroids are extremely toxic and dangerous.
27 — If you stop working out, your muscle will turn into fat.
28 — Ingesting MCT . (medium-chain triglyceride) oils will give you tons of energy, but they won’t make you fat.
29 — If everyone took the same amount of steroids, everyone would look like a professional bodybuilder.
30 — Someone with a well-built body must be knowledgeable about fitness and physique development.

I couldn't even make it halfway through without saying to my self who the fuck cares and where is the proof that all of those are lies. Seems to me they are all either an opinion or a very open ended remark.

I agree and despite what some naysayers have already posted I found it really interesting and fun.

I would add that most supplement ads are pretty misleading to say the least

I'd say at least a few of those are true

Most of them are, with a few so so. I remember well when it came out in MM2K back in the day. These are 5 that came to mind that are similar to some of the above. Sure, some are pretty "no duh" but it seems many still hold to them....

5 myths of building muscle

Myth #1: You must spend 7 days per week in the gym to gain strength and muscle mass.

Fact: Not only do you not need to spend all your days in the gym, doing so is usually counterproductive. That’s right, too many days in the gym = less strength and muscle mass. Learning how to optimize a program to the individual allows every set and rep to count, with virtually no wasted time in the gym.

Myth #2: without steroids and other drugs, you will never add serious muscle to your frame.

Fact: this is flatly false, and usually a myth perpetuated by those not willing to put the time and energy needed to build muscle without drugs. People can and do add serious muscle to their frame without the use of any drugs, and that’s a fact. 30-50lbs of muscle added over time is not unusual. Using the correct nutrition, training, and supplements to achieve that goal can save years of wasted time and money.

Myth #3: You must follow the program Arnold and other pro bodybuilders used to get big and strong

Fact: professional bodybuilders have genetics 99.99% of the people reading this do not posses. Sorry, but that’s the facts. Arnold’s program worked for Arnold; that does not mean it will work for you. In fact, it will not work well for most people reading this page. If you have the genetics, time, and knowledge (or pay someone with the knowledge as is often the case today) of Arnold, Dorian Yates, or Jay Cutler, then congrats to you! For the other 99.99% of people reading this, including yours truly, we will have to find what works best for us…

Myth #4: You must eat piles of supplements to gain muscle mass or strength.

Fact: you don’t need any supplements to gain muscle mass and strength. Magazines try their best – and few people on the planet have more experience with the magazines then I do – attempting to convince people without the latest greatest wiz bang supplement, they will never gain any muscles or get stronger. That is false. A proper nutrition program, using the right calories and macro nutrients (yes, good old food!), combined with a properly designed training program optimized to the individual, is the foundation of gaining muscle and strength. Many of the pro bodybuilders I know, don’t use any supplements at all….Yes, supplements can be beneficial, and some are absolutely worth using, but make no mistakes, they are “supplemental” to a good nutrition and training program, so if you don’t have those two down solid, supplements are of little value to you.

Myth #5: You need to use secret eastern block magic exercises to gain strength and muscle mass

Fact: Although there are some great exercises and various plans that come from all over the world – including the eastern block countries – there are no secret or magic exercises that are more effective than “the basics” you already know about. However, knowing  when and how to employ them, issues of volume, tempo, reps, and other variables, are the keys to making steady progress in strength and muscle mass. These are not “secrets” but they are very specific, and when optimized to the individual, very effective for gaining lean muscle mass and strength. Spin your wheels in the gym, or make every set count. The choice is yours….

6) – You don’t have to be strong to be big.

I think a dude could train in the 12-15 rep range all the time, eat an abundance of carbs and protein, and take lots of drugs.... and be big but not very strong.

That one has been a big debate for a long time; the relation of strength to size and vise versa.
