One time I saw a couple of guys stuff some clothing under their coats. They saw me see them and made a VERY threatening gesture. I called the police from my cell phone and received a police escort from the store to my car AND also to the freeway.
Under normal circumstances, I probably would say something directly to the perpetrator ~ like; do you want to put that back and leave the store or do you want me to cause a commotion?

if I saw someone stashing something to steal while they were inside a dept store I'd probably just assume the store security was already on to them, and chances are if they made it out of the store I would'nt be able to tell if they stole something or not because it would be hidden.....
if I saw someone gank someones purse I'd be on them like stink on shit

Wow that's scary. :o
I am not sure if I would say anything...I'd like to think I would, but it depends on the situation, I guess. I would definitely say something about a pickpocket or purse snatcher. I might take them down myself. >:(

A wise man once said,
you got to pick a pocket or two!

That's a tough call. Either you mind you're own business and let them get away with it or you say something and risk getting your head bashed in. Today's world is sick.
As for the pick pocket...If someone tried to pick pocket me I would definately chase him down and do something to him.

women steal aswell you know.
-
Even today, in the 21 century, men use violence against women at every turn. And they do it, because it still works. Doesn't make it right, but a male certainly uses this to his advantage when he can...and couple that with a person that tries to steal something to get over on someone or a business, the results aren't ever "pretty."
Even being a male, I would just mind my own business. I would not make eye contact in any way, nor would I try to do anything that gives them the faintest idea that I know what they're doing. If you feel you must alert somebody to what is happening, then I would do so completely out of view of the perpetrator. Wait for them to leave the store, which can be positive and negative. Positive that the owner can't really do anything until the thief has walked through the doors. But negative because that is more time for them to make a getaway.
Sometimes in todays world, it's better to just turn a blind eye to the situation. Worse things can come of it if you don't. You never know what could happen, because no matter how big you are or how well you can fight...you can't outrun a bullet. :-\
-
women steal aswell you know.
Yes...I know. I just didn't want to upset the "feminists" on the board and we all know who they are.
-
Today's danger level is higher than before so it's more likely the person is armed somehow.
I like to think men would go after a purse snatcher , to help a lady out.
Store incidents are not so worrisome to me if the security people aren't aware I would think insurance would cover the loss. :-\
Gee Princess that was scary , I'm glad to hear they escorted you and didn't just pass you off.
I also agree it's a unisex issue , I've seen teenage girls beat down people to rob them . :o
NYC is one place that always shows the "darker" side of life.
Visit and keep your eyes open is what should be the motto. :(
-
It would depend on my mood. If I were in a very bad mood I may confront the person. If they were walking around continually stealing I'd tell someone in the store. If they were scary like in Princess's story and I wasn't in a bad mood and they didn't know I was watching them, I may try to follow them out of the store and try to get their license plate if they left in a car...then I think I'd alert the store and police. You never really know what you'd do until you're in the situation though.
I understand they may have insurance to cover their losses but isn't the cost of that passed on to everyone w/higher prices. :(

:o yikes
There were some people at grocery stores (men and women) stealing the money and credit cards out of old lady's purses that were in their carts. The old ladies wouldn't even realize it until they went to pay. If I saw someone do something like that I'm pretty sure I'd make a scene but you never know what you'd do till you're there.
-
I watched "The Brave One" yesterday.
I know what Jodie Foster would do ;)

my middle name is danger !
I also keep a nylon cape neatly folded up in my glove box because you just never know when a guy like me will need it !

I work Loss Prevention. I travel around to the worst area stores in my city and my job is focused mainly on catching thieves.
If a customer in the store sees someone stealing all they need to do is tell an employee what's going on and to get a manager immediately. The manager knows how to deal with them as well as tell any security if they have it.
I know most customers might feel threatened but people don't understand that 99% of thieves are cowards and will back down from even the slightest confrontations. That threatening "look" they might give is their reaction while trying to figure out if you're a threat or not. Believe me, their first and main instinct is to run.
For the rest of my life, even when I don't do this anymore, if I see someone stealing wherever I'm shopping it's on like donkey kong.
-
This is the way I pass judgerment on others; I ask myself, would I want this to happen to me?
My answer is NO! I would tell and would try to stop the perps!

Funny how it got from simple stealing to what you would do if... :)
Ever sat in an elevator with a gun in your mouth because you were too stupidly involved with your life to not get on the elevator with the fuckhead? Not that I would know, but I think you would do everything in your power to not die. Your soul goes flying out of your body and sits on the ceiling and everything is in slow motion. And you say soooo many ridiculous things in slow motion that eventually save your life. :D Mostly you talk about being screwed in life, even if you haven't, or you have and remembered everything that happened in 8th grade. It helps, maybe. I wouldn't know.
Then a week later when you get to the police station they ask you if you're going to be in a line up or if you're viewing one. :( Then, in the room they put you in, there is a lot of stolen material... and when you get to the final line up thing, he isn't there.
Always watch yourselves in elevators. Stand in the front next to the buttons. Don't get on if you have a feeling.

Yes it was me. I still remember when it was happening and I expected to have my head blown off by the crazy f*ckhead in an elevator, the only thing that went through my mind was "my mother's going to kill me." :P

true story...
about 10 years ago i was driving through the Lowe's parking lot and saw a dude running in a crouched position in between the parked cars, then i saw 3 dudes in red "Lowe's" shirts running from the store...but going the wrong way. the dude stood up and bolted to a car that was obviously waiting for him about 20 yards in front of me. seeing that it was obviously a robbery, i hit the gas and tried to hit him with my car. he jumped out of the way as i passed the getaway car (it was an old Chevy nova). i pulled the emergency brake on my car and turned the wheel blocking the escape of the car.......until they plowed into the front left corner of my car. i jumped out (over their hood0 and tried to open the car door but it was locked. as i looked in the car...it was an old woman driving!!!! (probably the dudes mom!). i ran over to the passenger side and was able to pull the door open as the guy was yanking on it to shut it. he got it shut and locked it as he was screaming like a girl.....kinda funny....
so i ran back over to the drivers side as they were pushing my car to the side with their car.....i tried to kick the drivers side window so i could get in......but i missed as they were pulling off and hit part of the car that splits the front and rear window........
then they drove away
so i stood there with a broken foot, a crunched up car, and was belittled by the police for a good 40 minutes about how dumb i was for trying to stop them.....
after the police filled out their report, i drove home and hobbled in to rest because my adrenaline was through the roof.
1) broken foot sucked and cost $$$ to see the doctor
2) crunched car cost $$$$ to get fixed
3) no one from Lowe's even called to thank me or ask how i was
4) bad guys got away
but its a funny story to tell your friends....just glad i didn't get shot in the face. LOL :P

Ya know.. no matter where I'm working, the security (off duty cops) or the cops who show up to arrest the assholes I catch, either try to convince me to become a cop (hell no) or talk shit about how it's thier job to catch these people. These cops are fucking worthless!!! Half of them are nothing but revenue collectors for the state and the other half are too jaded by being in this horrible city to be effective.
So I say f%$K that.. good job WM.

I appreciate what you tried to do Wes Mantooth! I hope you recovered fully.
And it is a good story ;D

looking back it i must admit...it was stupid (in regard to my personal safety), but i just kinda reacted....
recoved in full. the only thing that hurt other than my foot was my pride. :)
i hope at the very least those people will think twice about robbing a store/ or someone next time...

holy cow :o
Deedee I'm so shook by what happened to you I can't imagine how you dealt with it , I'm not sure many people could. I am glad to say I'm real happy you are here and now I'm thinking I know how you can deal with other things so easily. Kudos Deedee ;)
I do say I have changed my view with the reading of this thread.STella you're right the loss is passed down as higher prices and I would from now on , discreetly say something to a cashier or floor clerk.
but let me catch a punk trying to take some poor ladies purse , I'm gonna be quicker than Geo and put a spankin' on somebody >:(

Yes, tis true, I find many things funny I wouldn't have normally if it hadn't happened. So maybe that's why the Linda thing is not worth bothering about. :) But you guys really have raked her. Why does everything have to be homogenous? Can't there be some weirdness? ;D

How old were you? Did they ever catch him? I'm sorry that happened to you.
I was an adult. They did catch him, and I didn't have to do anything since he had raped a bunch of women and they were all there to identify him. I think the only reason I might believe there is a god STella, is because I really did look down upon myself in that elevator and saw myself talking to him so clearly from afar. So I do believe the soul can be detached. Also, I think somehow when you are in complete fear you revert back to childhood, hence the begging for your mother. Mine had already passed, but she never wanted me to move to that city.
At least I didn't pee or poop my skirt. :) I would've died with dignity.
ps. I only told this story, because all women should watch themselves. Never put yourselves in a position where you are weak, and don't depend on a firearm, (or a swiss army knife ::) ).
-
wow dee...interesting story.
No one really knows what they would do unless they were in that exact situation themself. I guess if the outcome was being able to walk away from the situation alive & not physically harmed....then you made the right choice in the crisis.
Personally, if someone is robbing a store by stealing merchandise...I've walked up to them & called them a shit head. I refuse to tackle someone or physically touch someone because in this day & age...everyone is sue happy...even the person committing a crime.

This thread reminds me of this time when I was working at a camera store in high school. There were 3 people working and these 4 dudes walk in and start asking each sells man about different things: one about camera bags, one about cameras, and one about random stuff. The guys kept picking stuff up and asking the sales men to hold them for them and in no time each sales men was loaded down with bags, cameras, and other junk. The guys then nabbed a couple of cameras off the counter and just took off and all the sales men could do was look at each other b/c the all had thousands of dollars worth of merchandise in their hands and couldnt drop it. LOL I laughed my ass of seriously fell on the ground laughing when they told me this, I can just see these schmoes standing there like wtf do we do? hahaha lol makes me laugh to this day ;D
