Title: Unless your rich why...
Post by: charles-benner on February 27, 2008, 09:36:31 AM
do you bodybuild.  I mean in all realityit cost an arm and a leg to succed in this sport at the level where you can make any kind of money.  Between meals supplements training time family time it takes a lot to do this sport and really no thing to show for it, so i ask why or what drives us to compete in this sport

Maybe it's because we actually like lifting heavy weights and going to the gym and don't give a shit about the adulation from a bunch of drooling schmoes to win a small plastic trophy.

it's not that expensive.  you dont need supplements.  you don't need

You train 1 hour a day, 5 days a week.
That means you have to miss American idol sometimes, sure.

meal prep time (if you cook for the day at once) takes same amount of time as if you ate 3 junk meals each day.

Some people spend a lot of time on the boards, that'll drain the clock for sure.

Very true - I worked out recently that my monthly food budget for the gym is fractionally less than when I was on a lay off eating junk food and sweets all the time.

what does being rich have to do with keeping your body in shape?

rich or poor, exercising or this thing you call a bodybuilding lifestyle is something that all humanity should have in their lives. Exercising and eating shouldn't be consuming all of your time. It should be second nature for a healthy life.

poor people are often healthier than rich people.

if you spend 8-10 hours a day doing manual labor, you're getting some exercise in.

Of course, this is offset by the lack of health care available or nutrition.

you dont bodybuild for others...you do it for yourself and if you don't you're wrong.

Why do we really bodybuild? because for most it increase/multiply confidence tenfold and happen to have an obvious positive effect on wellbeing.

And, yes , you can  even make other people jealous when you have the opportunity, and latest scientific researches proved that it may lenghten lifespan.

to be honnest, i think people who dont bodybuild are really stupid, considering all the benefits it brings into the lifes of those  who workout.

Poor people are far more likely to be overweight and years of manual labor breaks down your body more than builds it. The poor also have crappy life styles where they watch more TV, are more lazy, eat junk, abuse alcohol, have more babies (which continues the cycle of poverty), don't educate themselves (whether formally or just reading, learning new things, being informed, and just paying attention)... Successful people tend to be more driven and are more likely to take care of themselves. They may need a personal trainer to do it but they do it. They also have better hygiene.

Hardly anyone in the US does "manual labor" for a living anymore.  Most "poor people" these days work behind a counter somewhere.

Poor people also tend to be less educated about nutrition and more likely to eat whatever cheap processed-carb crap food is placed in front of them, and they are far less likely to be spending money on a gym membership.

I also want to mention that EVERYONE in this country has access to health care. Even if an illegal felon gets hit by a car they will and have to be treated. It's health insurance that everyone does not have, many simply by choice. Try sitting in a ER waiting room in Cali. It's a 3 hour wait minimum because it's crammed with Mexicans bringing in their babies for treatment. They use the ER as office visits since they are guaranteed treatment and trying to collect is impossible. That's why 3 hospitals in the area I use to live (Redondo Beach) closed.

BTW, a huge majority here in Hawaii do manual labor (construction). Mostly locals and Philipinos. Not a single Mexican.

I'd say, more wealthy people go to the "fitness club" and play around with machines.  Few bodybuild.  Plus, most who have real wealth are over 40, making them less likely to squat big weight.  The majority of people with a good amount of money have enough sense not to take gear and let's face it....to bodybuild without drugs, simply isn't that easy.  If it were, everyone would be out there doing it. ;)

That seems backwards from what you would expect.  If you don't have a lot of money, your focus would be on making money... who cares about bodybuilding at that point?  After you have money, then you can then afford to put more focus on other goals.

Well, the amount of money I have now does not allow me any more time than I had when I had less money. That is to say, I am not a multi-millionaire, so I don't have the luxury of going weeks/months without really working, and don't have a stupendous amount of passive income.

But, I have enough money to be comfortable. I buy things I want, which includes a river catamaran, snowboarding and snowmobile stuff, golf clubs and stuff like that. So I spend more time rafting, snowboarding and golfing and such.

Does that make any sense?

Let's be real about something....the vast majority of us on Getbig aren't "bodybuilding".   We're liftin fvckin weights as a hobby...that's it.  Some use gear and some don't.  Some choose to oil up, put on their man panties and get on stage and flex it out with other men.   I used to live and breathe all things bb....mags, training, diet, blah, blah, blah....now I lift weights as regularly as I can for fun.   I eat clean for the most part, but don't stick to eating every 2-3 hours everyday while drinking 4 gallons of water and trying every supplement on the market.   This site gets to people and they actually believe the bullshit people spew out on here.  The majority of people on here are casual lifters that lie about themselves 24/7.   If I can go extended periods and train very regularly then great.  If I can sustain a quality diet for a long time then great.  Although, I never forget that I'm not gettin on some damn bb stage and I'm not a pro bb....I'm just a regular guy.

It's pretty easy to understand why a lot of us as non-professional bodybuilders/bodybuilding fans would like to work out. It's fun, it makes you look better, it makes you feel better etc. For myself, I was overweight and getting into lifting weights and eating good helped me to lose a shitload of weight.

For professionals or aspiring pro's, the answer is probably a lot more complex. I guess most of them probably just slowly get immersed in the lifestyle, first entering one small show as a personal challenge, then slowly getting more and more involved in the lifestyle and spending more and more money on drugs.

But if they enjoy it and it makes them happy, more power to them.

if you're a non competitor and you're spending shitloads of money on supplements and eating 7 times a day you're a jackass, you can gain just as well on 4 bigger meals a day and no supplements, you're not gonna be competing so who gives a shit.

To keep the IFBB rich and make sure the promoters make a heap of money, Grand Prix = 10k now that is some serious cash and don't forget 5th place 1k now that makes it worth it. ::)

It's one thing to live like that in your early 20s (Platz was born in 1955), but as you get older, living hand to mouth doesn't quite have the same appeal.

Word.

I know that I lived similar to that up until 4 years ago...hand in mouth pretty much. Then I scored my current gig, and I'm making nearly 5x as much....happier than a pig in shit.
But I can't ever see me living like that again unless something dire happens. :-\
