Title: What next?
Post by: John Stutz on March 09, 2008, 09:34:43 PM
In January of 2007, something wonderful happened to me -- I retired. Life has been wonderful since. However, I did discover one huge drawback to retirement, which is that there seems to be a limit as to how much web porn one can humanly consume. Not only are naughty images starting to lose their lustre for me, but I'm finding my interest in imagery I once found exciting to be wearing thin over time. Sadly, this is starting to include my own imagery (if you can believe that!) which is yet another reason why a change of pace following Volume 2 seems warranted.

So I'm curious to know what types of imagery still inspire you all (besides mine of course). I have my own collection of favorite photographers who still hold my interest. But I'd like to see if anyone else can point out some truly inspiring works from photographers I may not know about. Or, can anyone point out some amazing images that you find outstanding, intriguing, or captivating? They need not be fitness related images.

Btw, I'm fixing to set up my own home studio to try some new things. So I might be needing a few volunteer models in the near future. This is separate from the work I'm doing on Volume 2 though. And I can virtually guarantee the results will suck. Practice makes perfect though (one would hope).

I moved this thread b/c I think you'll get better responses on this board.

I love photographs...I'm terrible with names, other than the obvious ones like Ansel Adams, but that's not really the stuff that really gets to me anyway.  Neither is porn.   ::)

I mean, porn's great and all, but it's not the kind of imagery that inspires me in such a way that it sticks with me for more than a few mins.

I like the things that are hard to capture and can be unbelieveable...weather events like bolts of lightning, animals or people captured when something crazy is going on....things that make you go HOLY SHIT.   :o

Some of the most awesome imagery I have seen ever were the ones taken by the Hubble telescope, I know that does not help but those are hard to beat.  I agree with what Ripitupbaby says about the stuff she mentioned, are usually very cool too.

I have always thought cityscapes can look pretty cool too.

What i really find interesting is the shots of people in their natural surroundings during everyday life, not staged.  Such as pics of the inner city ghettos that kind of gritty stuff, stuff that portrays emotion.  A bit like the Life photographs.

Most of the scenarios described above are interesting to me (except davidpauls  :P ).

I will try to post some pics in this thread as I come across them.

As I mentioned, I have my own collection of favorite photographers...

Take a peek at Floriane de Lassée (http://www.younggalleryphoto.com/photography/delassee/delassee.html). Her work amazes me. I wish she had a book published of her work. Last I checked, she didn't. Maybe I could learn how to do something like this in the next 30 years!

David Drebin (http://www.younggalleryphoto.com/photography/drebin/drebin.html) is also terrific. His book recently came out and is wonderful. Though his models are clearly staged, it's a bit grittier than the usual.

Thanks for the feedback.

Did you mean to say, "sticks with me" or "sticks to me" ?

Ooooh... how about some "inner space" pics? These are cool too. Imagery of cutaway stones by Bill Atkinson (http://www.billatkinson.com/GenerateCatalog.pl?page=0&filter=_Rocks). (More interesting than it sounds)

for "Masturbatory Purposes"?!?!?!?

If he's posting "I might need a few volunteers" it's NOT for masturbating. It's for getting some hottie into his house, putting a camera on her....next thing she knows is that she's shooting this weeks edition of "Exploited College Girls."
Maybe I should do that!!! :P

SOOOOOO................hes looking for some girls to get naked for him(for free!)....

Oh no... you've got that all backwards. The reason for shooting in studio is so I can get naked. That's frowned upon in the public places I usually shoot.

Btw, here's another provoking photographer, Mark Laita (http://www.faheykleingallery.com/featured_artists/laita/pers_page/laita_frames.htm), who I brought up on another forum some time ago. He actually features two bodybuilders and a figure competitor in his diptychs (look it up on your own time). Interesting parallels on each.

FYI, this is how sexual serial killers start out. Desensitized to porn then the next thing you know their freezers are full of dis-membered female body parts. I say beware don't let the smooth taste fool ya!

Bodybuilders (Fitness/and Figure girls) ......ways of thinking are so "skewered"
there delusion of grandeur has them doing things they would not normally do!
(If i "pose" for this guy ...it will get me "exposure" ......then ill turn pro/get a supplement contract and be in all the magazines!!)

i see this all the time (they have no REAL friends because they use everybody for "Networking")
we go to shows with friends who are bodybuilders/fitness/figure girls .....and they spend the whole time "shmooozing" and trying to "make connections"  (lol we just wanted a nice night out with friends to see a show)
they would sell there own mother to make "connections"

very sad .............the whole industry is based on using people and "what can you do for me???"
my career???
sucks...............not very many "real people"

I just want to shoot with John because I think he's a great photographer.   ::)

AWESOME photos from the links that have been posted in this thread...I love the city pics, they are really cool.

I also love sports pics...the ones that capture the most intense moment of a competition, incredible feats of human strength/will, etc.

This photographer is not for hire unfortunately. I've never accepted a paying job and likely never will. Well, maybe if SI wanted to hire me for their swimsuit issue I'd take that job. But then I'd probably do that for free.

On the contrary, beginning in 2009, I will exclusively be paying models for my shoots. In the meantime, fitness models I work with for the books must accept an equal share of profits from sales.

As for "skewered fitness/figure models"... I've worked with well over 100 competitors and I still consider most of them are to be good friends. I love going to the expos because it's these few times of the year that I get the chance to catch up with and see most of them. I've found most everyone who comeptes in this industry to be helpful and good natured. Some on the very top are also the nicest and most gracious of them all. There are a few exceptions of course. But in general, no one escapes without spending a small fortune for the honor to compete. So if you aren't here for friendships, then you're not going to be very happy in the long (or short) run.

Typically, it's the companies that take advantage of the girls, not the photographers. Very few photographers I know of (in this industry) offer fame or fortune as an enticement to shoot. Most photoraphers who run a business in this industry pay their models (quite well too). Whereas the companies who "hire" models at the expos and such tend not to pay them, prefering to hire locals so they don't even have to pay travel or lodging expenses. Or so I'm told.

Very true... I've met my share of "fame-minded" competitors as well. I don't stay associated with them very long though. Too many other fine folks around to spend time with.

"Be realistic!!" is sage advice indeed.

in some of his shots the use of light / angle gives "me" a different feel

maybe I can say a depth to the photo ?   I'm not wordy ?

and some of his use of different poses / as well some that obliterate some portion in an interesting way to me

also some blatant straight up nice crotch shots  ;D

just for conversation  :) WHY ?

 8) yeah we wanna know ..... see ?

I've just never been inspired from any photos I've ever seen of Mapplethorpe's. His lighting is usually flat and the way he poses his models (or choose to photograph them in their pose) is very awkward... Not artistic awkward. Just awkward. I don't know if it's the '80s leotards or the fact that there's nothing of interest to focus on, but he's never impressed me. He's among a handful of iconic photographers that I just don't get.

Now if you want to see some masters of human (and other) photography, check out Ritts (http://www.herbritts.com/) and Bitesnich (http://www.bitesnich.com/). The difference is astounding.
