I love them!  Akita's and Malmutes are awesome.  They'd be my top choice to own except for the size and the hair.  My last dog was a Keeshound mix, but she was small and did not have Keeshound hair.

Do you like Shiba Inu?

What do you mean by size? Too big or too small? Malamutes can be quite large? and the Shiba Inu is the perfect apartment dog....and very handsome too...looks like a fox...

Too big.  Malmutes are big and Akita's are huge.
Shiba Inu's are cool.  Good size.  Don't know anything at all about their temperment.

Very individual or so I am told. I have only known one. Very clean. Apparently they clean themselves like cats.

Of course if you like small....you can always go with the following:

Schipperke
(http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z25/Todesfick/schipperje.jpg)

or

Lundehund

They're cool & all....but I think alot of people don't choose them because of the fur  & tend to go with dogs with shorter coats

I don't know of any...but here's a suggestion.

The next time a dog show is in your area, go to one.

Some of the best, responsible breeders are there.  You can talk with them one on one & ask them to place your name on a list if they ever decide to breed.  For example, my breeder is almost at every show because her hobby & passion is showing dogs.  She doesn't breed for the sake of making puppies like a puppy mill does.  This year she is only scheduling one which is pretty common for her.

Everytime we go to a show, we get asked several times if we're studding out our dog.  When people see him, they want puppies from his litter.  Unfortunately, we're not in the postion to start studding him yet.  He hasn't been through his preliminary check yet & we have other goals then to start studding him all over the place.

When I was really young we had a Schipperke. Great little dog. But he died and the apartment building had a no dogs rule. I will likely never live in a house so small breeds like the Schipperke or the Shiba are my top choice, because I like Spitz dogs. A friend of mine had a whippet too and he was the most gentle and loving dog around. Would consider a whippet too. But alas I am too unsettled to even consider getting a dog the next few years. If I ever spend a few years in one place I will consider it.

I think it's a good place to start.  Think about it, most of these people spend alot of money on the care of their dogs.  It's also a good place for networking.  When you find a breeder that your interetsted in, it's easy to walk around the show & ask the other breeders what they think of so & so.  I think it's  a better place to start than surfing the net.  Also, always recommend that you want to see their place.  That will tell you everything you need to know.

My experience on the cats is 50/50.  You stand a better chance of making it 'work' by bringing in a puppy to an environment that has 2 adult cats.  It really depends on the cats really.  If they ignore the puppy & have no cares about it, then things will be fine.  If it was an adult dog with a baby kitten, that usually works too.  If you bring an adult dog into a house with an adult cat....could be a lot of trouble.  Our cat & dog don't really get along.  The dog loves cats.....but she's terrified of him & his size.  Behind a glass door...she's tough as nails & will fight him.  When I open the door & let him in...she hides & won't come out.  She swat at him once & really hurt his feelings.  He sat there & pouted about it.  You can tell he really just wanted to play with her & she smacked him in the nose.  Luckily, he has no desire to chase or hurt a cat or there could of been a problem.
