This week, the destination is Paris as "Pro Bodybuilding Weekly" welcomes the legendary SERGE NUBRET. A former Mr. Universe, Mr. World and Mr. Europe, Nubret has appeared in more than 20 feature films (including Pumping Iron). Jackson for the weekly edition of "Pep Talk".

Interesting things about Serge Nubret...
AKA "The Black Panther", Serge was a business major who moved away to skip being drafted in the Algierian War. His family hated bodybuilding, but he did it anyway. He won Mr. Guadeloupe in 1960 after only 3 months of bodybuilding training.
An actor, Serge starred in 25 films, including Pumping Iron. He competed until 1984, and guestposed in 2003 at the age of 65. I remember the pics, he looked to be in some insanely good shape - anyone have them?
In 2006, he authored "I am...Me and God", an autobiography with some deep thoughts. He is 69 years old.
Ask him about the training... back in the day he used to do 10+ sets of bench presses... He used to do an hour of barbell curls on chest day.

will there be an interpreter?

being a mod on the training board, hear my advice:
never have your chest workout consist of an hour of barbell curls. it will not make your chest bigger.
hope this helps.
-
Ask him about his cycles. I'm not hating on Serge or anything, but i wanna see how he reacts to it on air. Here he just denies it...
-

Should be good. I think Serge Nubret started his own federation at one time. Anyone have pics of him next to Arnold?
-
Mr Pepe,
Please ask johnnie Jackson about the feud with Ben White.
Remember that Ben White (who claims he is the greatest bodybuilder ever despite never entering a pro show) said he's the strongest bodybuilder ever.
Johnnie jackson said he'd to a squat/dead/bench contest - then ben white BACKED DOWN!
Turns out, "the greatest" has never done squats OR deadlifts. He's strictly a bencher (you can see him doing a monster 10 reps with 315 on youtube).
Ask him how he feels about this 1/3 powerlifter who has never done a show, besmurching his good name!
-
will there be an interpreter?
His English is fine, you'll have no problem understanding. Will there be a transcrict of the interview on here??
-
Hi Serge,
what do you think about the B&A International Classics 2008?
Do you think the IFBB are afraid of us because we care about the Amateur Athletes and they do not and that after we showed them how it can be done, that the Athletes are mad at the IFBB?
Do you think it is finally time to change Amateur Bodybuilding for the better (more prizes)?
Ben

Thanks for posting that photographic "history" of Nubret's career. Great stuff!
I think the most important contribution to the sport, or legacy, of a guy like Serge Nubret is that his kind of aesthetically pleasing physique encouraged and inspired a whole lot of guys to train, buy the magazines, follow the sport, etc.
You hear the same thing said about a physique like Frank Zane's. Some will say that Nubret or Zane presented a look that was both desirable to a wide range of people and "attainable". I understand where this sentiment comes from but I have to respectfully disagree on the "attainable" aspect. While Nubret always looked like a "human ideal" (not what some today refer to as a "freak"), the average Joe was not going to attain Serge's look no matter what they did in (or out) of the gym . . . There is only one Serge Nubret . . . Let's just say that he is what many folks would "aspire" to look like (if they could) . . . There is a far smaller group of people that aspire to look like today's 300 pound pros even if, as I do, they deeply respect their achievements.
I can't wait to hear the interview.

Serge, one of the great classic physiques ever on the Olympia stage.
I would hope that Chic and you get into it about the current IFBB judging standards.
Should they reward more classic line physiques like yours over the more massive ones.

Did Serge say anything about Pumping iron and what happened at that contest when he beat Louie?
-
They told Serge he couldn't do the 1975 Mr Olympia in S. Africa - the focus of Pumping Iron.
They told him when he arrived - "You cannot compete".
He didn't diet or train for those last 12 days. Then, they told him, the day before the O, that he could do it afterwards. He lost 12 pounds in those 12 days.
Would Serge nubret have won in 1975 with 12 pounds more muscle and leaner?
And, was it sabotage on the part of the filmmakers to make it a Lou/Arnold showdown?
-
Wow.... they suspended Serge after the show (the IFBB did?)
So he started his own BBing federation, WAABA? Then he won several of their shows? I don't follow... he competed in shows in a federation he ran? LMAO...
Serge was also the VP of Weider in Europe.
Serge was suspended from the IFBB in 1975. Why?
"Weider - the people around him - think I was too powerful and I wanted to take Weider's place. Weider believed them. They think I was too powerful."
-
Serge is calling out the Weider's integrity.
Haha
-
"Bodybuilding is dying"

I'm sure Chick will be here soon to tear apart all of these claims,
and defend the IFBB athletes as best he can ;)
-
He never dieted, he never did cardio.
He was just as ripped 6 months before a show, as he was on show day.
Team Nubret.
-
"I've never had a fucking protein shake in my life"
Team Nubret
-
He's laying out Weider..
It's not pretty.

"Bodybuilding is dying"
Team Nubret
That is really not too hard to figure out....

He didn't 'diet' because he always ate clean, supposedly. Thus, that statement is kind of misleading (although not the intent of Nubret, I'd imagine).

You realize that all the shit he said on this "show" was regurgitated from the message boards at bb.com? What a waste. They didn't even have the balls to ask him about steroids.

Wow... Johnny Jackson still doing POWERLIFTING MEETS?
1. Why won't ben White enter a meet against him?
2. Is it crazy for JoJ (who won a show last year) to risk his BBing career for a plastic PLing trophy?

BB career/ PLing career= kind of same thing, save for a few bb dollars....

So far it's a great interview. Glad to see Serge doing that interview and being completely honest.
-
How pathetic is that? The most important movie in bodybuilding history offered Nubret just $200 for his part in the movie. He said he turned them down so they cut his footage out of the movie. Way to take a stand Nubret! Todays bodybuilders would have probably done that shit for free. Getbig should consider making Nubret an honorary president!
-
Racists!

Any transcript of the interview??
-
Bob, I think I may know what part you're talking about. I always wondered what Serge and Arnold said to each other too, I'm not sure but there was a part right after that I couldn't figure out...
...until I watched the DVD with english subtitles on.
There's a part where Ed Corney mumbles something about Arnold having a bigger neck, and Arnold going "I know"...I can't remember what is said before, but check out the subtitles and I think you'll find out.

Maybe someone here knows....(where's Shawn Perrine when you need him)?
They're in the pump up room...Serge has a white robe on...Arnold comes over and says something that sounds like "bow to the giant..." and serge responds with what sounds like "nobody can take you/ touch you..."
Anyone?

is that Bob Bonham in the back??

Just got off the phone with Shawn Perrine...here's what we came up with:
Arnold: "Bow to the giant"
Serge: "Looks like I can take you"
Arnold: "Keep looking.."
The mystery may be solved..!

Bob, Good work. lol. Thank you Shawn. I was guessing now after watching it...I thought Arnold was kind of trying to psych him out a little bit...and Serge telling him it wasn't working...and Arnold responding by telling him to look at how good he looks...this is a great scene. These guys look fantastic...sexy.

Serge could have taken him too IF he'd not been banned from the show weeks and weeks earlier! He stopped training and then once re-instated had lost A LOT of size. Made in Montana can post the pic that made the weiders pull Serge from the show!

What? You mean the IFBB runs their shows with some political decisions / influences rather than fair ones? No way! Say it aint so!
Here I was thinking that the best man always wins :(

I can't believe how many times I've watched PI and I didn't notice the "bow to the giant" part!
My best guess on what Serge says, and I know this sounds a bit odd...
Two guys speaking English with tough accents, after all....to me, Serge sounds like he's saying:
"I hope *slight pause* I can take you"
..to which Arnold replies "Keep looking". I thought Serge must have said something along the lines of "I'm looking to take you"...some tough guy talk of the time, I'm sure...
-
That 'I-told-you-so' cocky look after Arnold won says it all. He was performing for the camera even then. What a showman.
No way Nubret was going to win in South Africa. A few dirty tricks by the IFBB ended his quest there.
I noticed Frank Burwash from Australia, now deceased, judging. He used to make me laugh when he said he looked for flaws and structural faults when judging. I thought judges should look for excellence.

Frank was right, you are wrong....as usual.
Judges at the pro level look for weakneses, not strengths....
You are right about one thing...Nubret was NOT going to win in South Africa...as he wasn't close to what Arnold displayed that day.

RE THE '75 OLYMPIA & WEIDER'S INTERFERENCE:-
In 1975, Serge went to S. Africa for the Olympia and when he got off the plane, he looked like this:
They saw Serge in that condition and disqualified him by making up the story that he made porn (even though he never did a porn film). A cheap shot considering Serge worked closely with Ben for 10 years--nice friend to surprise him and ban him from competing and slander his name in the media. They used the excuse that Serge was a bad role model for doing porn (he never did)...even though Arnold has posed nude for photographers--not Serge. lol.
Serge was disappointed and didn't train or eat for a couple weeks and lost 12 lbs. They saw he wasn't training and was losing weight from not eating, so the day before the competition they told him he could compete. If Serge had not come to S. Africa looking like he did in those photos, they could have given Lou 2nd place. In "Pumping Iron" they said, "Last minute competitor Serge Nubret" when they knew several months before he was competing. Arnold looked terrific and Serge has said he does not mind that he won, but the real question on everyone's mind was why was it ever necessary to ban him from competing?
-
Has anyone picked up the new issue of "Reps" yet? It has a nice feature in it:
• STEVE REEVES: HIS FINAL INTERVIEW:
The original bodybuilder who successfully made the jump from the posing stage to the silver screen looks back on his Herculean career.
If I'm not mistaken there were a few pictures of Serge in there as well. I din't read that yet I went right to the Reeves interview! Some great pics as well. One in a million Steve was.
Peace,
Rick
