Title: Does "internet addiction" exist and are you an addict?
Post by: GHGut on March 27, 2008, 04:31:49 PM
I think it does and I think I might be. I spend way too much time checking my various email accounts every day when I don't need to be doing so and reading/posting on various boards. Intervention time?

Yeah, it's any information at your fingers within seconds.  How could you not be addicted?
Want some hot pussy, BOOM, youporn.com.
Need someone to talk to, AIM.
Want to rank on 2nd rate juicers, getbig.com.
Granted, it does lack human contact...actually, that's the cool part. ;D

Dealing with real people annoys me.  I hate our politically correct world where you have to either censor every damn thing you say or come off looking like an asshole.  I much prefer the internet where the thoughts can just flow directly from brain to keyboard.

I see people addicted to watching porn, read about celebs/stars, other people lifes, and basically live throughout other people life.

Much more than TV, the internet allow people to access to anything possible, the problem is that once you ve seen everything you wanted to see, you feel like you're empty.

tons of people use the internet to get validation from the others (especially on a bbing board with people posting pics of themselves) and feel better about themselves.

I think there are too many informations, 90% of it is useless and has a bad influence over people and especially young minds.

It depends of what you do with it as usual, but most people do shit with the internet.

I bet you think video games are bad for kids too. ::)

when people (adults or kids) play video games to have fun with other people (multiplayer games) i think it's positive, but when it's lonely "adventure" or "role playing" games it can be really time consuming and uterly useless.

If someone gets addicted to something that is unproductive and useless, it can be a real train wreck.

people who abuse playing multiplayer video games (role playing or FPS) also wrongly feel like they re part of something, because acutally they know there are others humans doing exactly the same thing than em, and it may confort em into believing what they re doing is sane and productive, but most of the time it doesnt help these people have REAL relationship in real life and they just stick to "virtual" relationships. Over the years this can also lead to serious psychological troubles and incapacities, very hard to fight back especially if the "sick" person isnt even aware of having abnormal behaviors.

Yes everything can hurt and be destructive if you don't think about it sometimes .

So... yes. LOL  ::)

haha, Classic.  So true.  If you are wasting the same amount of time as millions, it doesn't seem so bad. ;)  Consider ANY entertainment source...following professional sports, movies, drinking, getting high, going to a club, laying on a beach, reading comic books, juggling, lifting...it's all technically...a BIG waste of time.  What is a "good use" of time?  Anything involved with making money, advancing in your career, having "meaningful" conversations, spending time with your family?
I guess it depends on how you view it.  What may be a waste of time to some, may be time well spent for others. ;)
Posting on forum about synthol and Derek Anthony's toupee?  Is that actually productive or have any point?  Other than making me laugh, no.
I would consider getting wasted at bars and dancing in a club, a complete fucking waste of my time....others, live for it.  I would say, those people have way too much free time on their hands....but they may think playing video games is a waste.
Waste of time:
People who walk on picket lines for Walmart
People who protest (way too much time on their hands)
People who go to raves
Building model airplanes
Crossword puzzles
Writing this post..
the list goes on and on

well , i can assure you having meaningful conversations with people (wether they re your girlfriend, wife, kids, parents, familly )who are worth it is the key to a better life, and that the consequences are in the long term benefical for both involved in.
I do not think talking truth with anyone is worth it, there are too many people who just aren't worth talking to, but you first have to be able to select/filter those who are worth it.

If people realized that just saying important and usefull things to people you care about and help em with their own life is finally the only truly fulfilling thing to do in life, they d laugh at you, but the funny is, it's exactly what matters and what makes you trulyl feel useful at the end of the day (and it doesnt mean you ve got to be a wise smartass all day long, or that you can't have good sex or be a puritan anyhow; actually understanding the your sex partner and everything that involves both of you in the relationship and what you plan to do in life can make sex truly better )

In my opinion you ve got to train your brains (working, or having positive and constructive relationships/conversations with people, wether they re smarter or less advanced than you) and not only your body.
It's a very positive and good thing to workout and modify your physique, its one of the most sane activity, too bad most people forget to also traint heir brains at the same time and apply what they do t their physique to their mind.
Dedicationt o achieve a goal, strict methods and constistancy can be applied to thoughts and mind, but too many people fthink that they just eh "physique" and that once they have it, the whole world is theirs...
to figure that they re as unhappy and empty as before, if not more , because they feel like they got cheated!

You ve got to have a sane mind in a sane body, you ve got both a body and a soul/mind/brain whatever you call it, and you have to work on both.
Any activity that allows you to develop one of the two mentioned above will make you feel like you re fulfiling your life.

i think you left out two things - 'fun' is self-defined as is happiness, and we still don't know the meaning of life.

it's called self control

unfortunatly in todays time this is not enough, think of it this way, all an alcoholic has to do is to stay away from alcohol what is in itself
quite dificult at times.
But in todays times it's litteraly impossible to stay away from the Internet.

Yes people are getting additect to the internet... and I can prove it.

My last job was a Managing position Customer support for the Online game World of Warcraft, I had a team of 80 Agents who would look after the clients who play Wow and their complaints.
We had daily complaints of people saying they would kill themself if we don't do this or that, for each we had to evalutate if they are real and serious if so than send the Police over to their house.
I have seen insane examples of people being completely consumed by the Internet and playing Wow, married couples who would play in the same house in separate rooms talking to each other over the game, asking each other if both are ready to go to bed.
We had a couple in scotland that didn't stop playing and didn't take care of their kids, they lost the kids to the wellfare because they wouldn't comply with the child wellfair office.
Countless of people that begged us to close the account of their loved once because they are ruining their life don't go to work anymore or school.
Wow is on the same list of addicted substances as Heroin etc. there are not real offices in Germany were you can get help with your addiction, more and more people recognice that this is becoming a serious problem.
I could go on and on about how examples of people I have seen that take Wow and online gaming so serious.
For excample one of my Staff who quite the job because I refused to let him work only the morning shift and not like the rest of the team  shift work, his reason was... well I cannot play the game in my guild anymore and I cannot raid, he quite the job and according to his housemates didn't stop playing for 5 days, he eat drank and slept infront of his computer, he set the time in the middle of the night so he can do certain things.

I have seen so much more in the time I worked there... maybe I write an article once.

no, the "fun" has nothing to do with hapiness, pleasure has nothing to do with hapiness, these are totaly differnt and oposite concepts.

You can have fun but still be deeply unhappy.

Hapiness is something really appart, that is precisely defined and explained in philoshophy and hat to achieve, hence so few of us being able to know and understand what it is.

read this (the art of hapiness):

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw/105-9248524-8765223?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=art+of+hapiness&x=0&y=0

(its nor eligion bullshit, its pure philosophy) and you will know what is hapiness, and what differenciates it from "fun" and "pleasure", which again, completely different things.

it's very practical and has be written by the dalai lama interviewed by an occidental psychnalyst (howard cutler) .

If you guys had to read one book in your life, it would be this one.

interesting....

You have no idea how far they take World or Warcraft, did you know that a lot of Wow players outsource their account to some guy in China? thye pay money to an office in china that has people play accounts for somebody when the owner of the account goes asleep, that way the account is being played for 24 all the time, that's the only way for people to stay on top of the ranking. It's of course illigal and if you are getting caught yot get your account deleted.
The Asians take it all to a new extreme, most of them play in Internet cafe's, most of them don't even have a pc at home, the way they play is in groups
in the Internet shop, but they don't play for fun they take this serious, they sit in one row and before them a guy with a Megaphone shouting commands at them.
Some Korean dude who played Counter Strikes, was on a Lan party and got repeatitly knifed (humiliated in game) so he gets up takes his knife and kills the guy for real.
Some other Korean guy who coulnd't stop playing Diablo died after 2 days playing without end, he didn't drink water hahhahaha I was just thinking how hard is it to have a glas of water beside you drinking from time to time.

Also sexual Predators using these games more and more to get young kids to give them photos for items ingame. The amount of complaints we got on a daily basis of people doing that...

Does internet addiction exist and am I an addict?

I posted once approx 2 years ago saying: "My name is Linda and I am addicted to the internet" (and never forget, I am the person who arrived at Getbig when I allowed a daft lover to use my 'puter and he left himself logged into Getbig and I discovered your website...  He was very certainly addicted.

Your comments about what is real and what is not are fascinating.  I've always thought that the time we spend on ourselves is what really shapes us.

My hobbies are me.  And I've always been into solitary pursuits.

But I've never felt lonely.  I garden, come indoors and play extremely loud music and dance about silly, I read lots and lots and then I log on and scroll.  I work out.  It suits me.  & I wank by myself.

I dislike most people too, I find them trite.

Wonder if there'll be a slew of nasty deaths shortly.  It'll be like a new cult.

All these sad old blokes will be found dead on the floor underneath their 'puters.
