I don't think it's a real good lesson taught , or maybe it's just my area .
The kids here are given maybe 30 minutes of actual exercise and pretty much seem to think that's good. High schoolers have it three times a week and the younger ones each day ( more like recess ).
I learned from a teen that the home economics class had them to make lasagna and brownies in the cooking course. She had no class yet at all on what foods are better than others . I would have thought it was required at some point.

I think they should incorporate more physical fitness and activities to kids in schools. Look at the size of some of these kids. The obesity is pathetic and very unhealthy.
-
Back in the olden days when I went to school, we had gym a couple times a week and it was for about 45 minutes. Lots of exercising and movement. Today, it seems like the classes are not like they used to be. To many kids can bring a doctors note in for nothing and be excused. :(
My gym is going to offer circuit training for kids. They are ordering machines in that are sized for children. I think it's a great idea. :)

During the end of my last year of high school they built a new wing with a swimming pool. I was lucky enough to be able to skip that adventure. ;D

You would try and get gym last period. I remember curling my hair in science class and always getting yelled at. :P

Swimming I could have loved , but it's true , only at the end of the day ... we didn't have any pool .. ( back in the olden days .. lol @ Laura )
I had gym every day and around 45 minutes we had a commando gym teacher must be , we had to run the track or gym depending on the weather every other day , the other days were either gymnastic stuff ( I hated climbing those ropes ) or some game baseball , basketball or volleyball.
With video games so popular you'd think the schools would be a little more focused on fitness :-\
Laura that's a good idea getting some child sized equipment in a gym :)

i remember back when i was 10 or so, the "coach" used to make us take the cooper test every class, while he was smoking a cigarrete...only in chile ;D
After done, he would give us a class about being healthy lol

In school, we had gym class everyday. In my highschool gym was complusory for grades 9 & 10, and part of that did involve swimming. I lucked out though, my gym class was right before lunch, so we could bring out the blow dryers and curling irons and make ourselves normal again. One thing I remember vividly was that the synchronized swimming portion took place in the winter, and I remember my friends and I sometimes going to the mall right after gym class or hanging out while our hair was still wet, and chunky spiky icicles forming on our heads. It looked pretty neat until you got back in school and they'd start to melt, and you'd get water dripping down your back in math class. Later I transferred highschools and the new one didn't have a pool. Thank Goodness.

whats the cooper test
from jewishpedia
The Cooper test is a test of physical fitness. It was designed by Kenneth H. Cooper in 1968 for US military use. In the original form, the point of the test is to run as far as possible within 12 minutes. The test is meant to measure the condition of the person taking it and therefore it is supposed to be run at a steady pace instead of sprints. The outcome is based on how far the tested person ran, their age and gender. The results can be correlated with VO2 Max. It is an easy test to perform on a large group of people, but difficult for the runner, as the duration lies between a long-distance and a short-distance run.

I teach PE, weight training, and health here in Georgia. In most elementary schools the kids get anywhere from 2-3 days a week for PE. Then when they get to me in high school they only have to take one semester of personal fitness and a semester of health. I can't begin to tell you how lazy today's generation has become. The counselors at my school make my job even more difficult by sticking any kid who needs a credit in weight training instead of kids who want to be in there. The athletes who need the class can't get in. I make the most of it though. I treat it like a big group personal training session. The kids affectionately call the weightroom "The Dungeon."

I hated gym class and skipped out every opportunity. One year I had 72 truancies, so the class must've been held often . :P I barely remember any of it except the gym teacher would stand outside the showers and make sure everyone coming out was fully drenched before handing them a towel. Creepy.

Well, "back in the day", the girls had a woman teacher and the guys had a male and were completely segregated (is it still that way?). "Ms" Rice clearly was the more masculine member of her intimate relationships ;)
Several years ago, my H/S history teacher was convicted of molesting boys :-X He was an awesome teacher, but I guess you can never tell... :-\

I would hope that's in a totally separate area from the adults. I find the YMCA type ("family friendly") atmosphere very unappealing, especially with kids in the locker room, running in the halls, etc. I spoze adults don't act much better sometimes.
-
Princess you made me giggle "Ms" Rice , I've known a few of them. :D
We had Co-Ed gym :( ( ok I think I hear banjos ) we had seperate locker rooms and bathrooms but had class Co-Ed
The more I think about it maybe I was real lucky not to have a pool in my school. ::) Co-Ed swimming may not have been pretty.

No matter if the teacher was male watching the boys or female watching the girls...them standing their making sure you come out of the shower dripping wet before handing you a towel is definitely wrong and sounding like a pediphile to me. >:( There would be no way in "effing" hell I would have done it.
-
When I was in grade 9 and 10, phys ed was manditory and men and women were segregated. Male teacher for the men, female teacher for the women. That's just how it was and I graduated in 1993.

I'm sure that's why I skipped but didn't really realize the reason back then. Questioning authority or even reporting things like that back then was practically unheard of.

A teacher waiting by the showers to hand kids a towel is just plain wrong.

I agree, and for any time (era). I was never a trouble maker in school and always did as was told, but this would have been one area I wouldn't have refused.
