.....you realised that all the IFBB pros in the magazines took drugs?
I was naive as fuck - I think I was about 19 and had been training for four years at that point.
Dis-muthafuckin-cuss.

I always knew they were...but for some reason I was convinced that Shawn Ray was natural, and possibly even Flex Wheeler.
When I found out, my earth wasn't exactly shattered though...

Apparently so. I wouldn't have believed it myself but there you have it. ;D

The problem with being young (or maybe it's the great part of being young) is that you are so delusional the truth doesn't matter. Most teens looking at the mags probably realize that they are idolizing roided out monkeys, but in their own delusional mind they believe they are the one in a billion person who can look like that without drugs. It's the egocentric point of view that teens have, the invincible sydrome that gets teens in so much stupid shit.

How can you spout such deceitful lies !?!?
-
I had been making such good gains training (because I had just started) I figured the pro's really did just train harder, eat better and possessed greater genetics. When I was 19, maybe 20, a friend of mine who is an IFBB Pro told me the truth straight up. He didn't just tell me it took drugs, but he laid out HOW MANY. I was pretty dissapointed.
-
I knew they were on gear because I knew people doing it as well. That didnt stop me from thinking I could achieve the same thing without any help, haha! I was confident in my genetics, I know better now.

The first magazine I ever read about bodybuilding was
before I ever touched a weight. It was the October 1981
Muscle and Fitness that has pics of Arnold as Conan on the front.
I read an interview with Arnold in it and his ankles had swollen
to twice their normal size when he arrived in Australia for the 80 Olympia.
Franco took a look at him and asked him if he'd been using any drugs.
Arnold replied just the usual steroids, nothing more.
Afterwards he had remembered he had taken a cortisone injection
before leaving Santa Monica that caused the water retention.
I guess I was lucky I knew what was up before I ever touched a weight.
I was around 15 when I read that and didn't start training until around 16 1/2.

most kids back in the day knew the truth the moment they looked at eric van eric from wwf ,,also any kid who looked at arnold back in the day could tell he was juiced to the max,,id say age 17-18 is when the slower kids catch up on this but most kids that are into making career in bodybuilding or wrestling are being pushed so hard by their mamas and papas i wouldnt be surprized if the american dad and mom actually buy them the hormones so they can make it to the local football highschool or college team
american are exteremly into sports,,in small town usa american football and or baseball is a big deal and will make or break a kid when it comes to fuckin all the whores ....getting better education...being respected by the adults,,,getting off with shit he does,,,
with the females its exactly the same only with more aspect to cheerleading and modeling as in pagent ,,,american moms in the 90s and now too will kill and do a lot of things to push their daughters into competition even if the daughter dont want it,,they live their dreams throuth their kids,,,its pathetic and the cause of many mental problems with american youth that helped tremendesly in creating what gh15 has named

My experience was pretty similar, except for the pro giving me the scoop. Ironically, I didn't realize HOW big a difference they made until I saw some people come off. I remember one guy who used to do seated db presses with the 100s when he was on; when he came off, he had trouble with the 70s.
All in all, I was pretty effin naive, too. As a teen I used to watch pro-wrestling and see guys like Hogan and Tony Atlas. It never occurred to me that they were on gear.

I caught on quick myself but I always had the belief that if you followed everything to the "T" and were always striving for your goals that anyone could create a great physique. The part that was a shock was how many guys took the cheap route (BBing and sports in general).

The thing is that when I started, as a teen, I didn't know that steroids existed. The magazines never mentioned them and the guys who did them were very secretive.

I never knew much about roids and honestly even though I know more then your average joe I still don't know dick about them, partly because I don't care to know too much until at least 25 which is when I will feel open to use if my budget permits. But it didn't take long to realize the guys I read about weren't doing anything more then I was and to see them so big and still shredded completely ended my naivety along with their outrageous weight fluctuations between "on" and "off" seasons.
-
I was about 10 years old when I first picked up a bb magazine. There were articles about steroids and many of the athletes mentioned them in the interviews so it was no secret. So I understood the situation immediately.
-
Well my cousin started competitive bodybuilding when I was about 13 and he was always very honest with me about the drugs he took. I didn't start seriously lifting until I was 18 so I guess I knew from the jump off so to speak.

you can have great physiqe if you follow everything to the t ,,but it will be small,,example? 5'7 145lb on stage,,,5'10 160lb on stage,,6' 175lb on stage etc etc etc
no one said you cant have great physiqe with out hormones ...it will just look like a built guy with no thickness and no mass and the reason people look at you in general is ONLY BECAUSE OF MUSCLE MASS,,the cuts and peeled and 6% is all good for stage,,,there is nothing more impressive than a bodybuilder 250lb walking around at 10% wide full and tight with a swole look to him yet no moon face due to the use of ae or ai ,,that bodybuilder in a shirt will still look like a bodybuilder and that bodybuilder will be noticed,,ONLY THE ONES WHO BEEN THERE KNOW HOW MUCH OF A SUPERMAN YOU FEEL WALKING AROUND LIKE THAT

I agree for the most part but IMHO I feel like if I had the budget to mantain a natural physique (eating good 24/7) that I could be 200+ on stage as a natural, so far (until recent times) I was carrying 210lbs at a fairly lean weight (10% or less) with ease and I was still growing. Now I am 220lbs or so and carry some extra fat (along with a leg injury from last fall) and I still feel if I fully dedicated myself that I could be 200+ plus onstage if I had the resources to do so.
I am 6'0" even.

Sounds like you had a good cousin...
He was always really honest with me. He sure saved me a lot of money on supplements letting me know what was junk and what was actually worth my money. Great guy.

I would do the same if my cousin ever got around to serious lifting. I have a home gym but he still seems afraid to get serious into lifting but I try to guide him in health and nutrition as much as I can. I wish I had a cousin like yours though because basically everything I know I taught myself through books, getbig and the mags out there.

I always really feel bad for people who get into bodybuilding who don't have someone who's been around the block persay to help them out. It's always an uphill battle for those guys so when I catch kids like this at the gym I try to point them in the right direction.

Yeah most people stumble blindly into the health & nutrition world and know knowing, if only we all had that person to set us straight...
-
i was about 18, i was reading through a mag thinking these guys must have everything down, the diet training everything...
now i am so much smarter ;D

6ft 250+plus had calipers measure me at 14%,I was on about 5grams a week at age 26.
I will be waiting for SF to call Bullshit i cannot back it up with photos.

I knew right off. I started lifting at 12...reading mags at about 14-15.
I also remember Franco addressing roids in a M&F article way back in like 79 or 80 that he said he tried roids once, but dissuaded others from using them because 'you can get the same result from eating sausages...they will just bloat you like eating sausages'...or something retarded like that.
From that point on...I never liked Franco...full of crap.
Yeahhh...just go eat some Swift Premium sausages...haha.
Anyone recall that article?
-
from 13 to 15 when i trained at home, i thought that the smaller guys in the mags like bob paris weres natties, and the beasts were taking somthing...
after one week in a proper gym at 16 i pretty quicky sussed that everyone was on somthing, even the lads who looked crap....
