find out what it is made out of, then find out how to clean and preserve that material.

lol I wonder if one has been on Antiques Roadshow. Is it worth anything? BTW only time Ive watched that show is when Im flipping channels. Sometimes there is some nice antiques or old ladies who had some heirloom passed down to them from their moms uncles wifes grandmother.  :D

You got good advice...  you could also bring it in to a tailor, or go to a good men's clothing store and ask.  People who work in these areas are often very knowledgeable.  Those duffel bags were usually made of denim, or something equally hardy, so caring for it shouldn't really be a problem, long as you keep it dry and moth-free, I would think.

Don't mess with it, leave it as it is.

Total madness:  I had a dream about this exact same subject the other night.  (I also am hoarding an old duffel bag).  In my dream, I left it outside in the rain and the next day it was all gleaming and kinda sparkly.  I woke up immediately after that.

I'm extremely weird.  Look up weird, it means fate.

I really did have a dream about that old bag.  And it really did look all sparkly and clean.  I put it out in a torrential rainstorm in my dream.

And I really did wake up in a start and instead decided to leave the old duffel bag alone with all it's WWII dna on it.

That's the exact same duffel bag.

I've bought a few new unused ones since on the Portobello market.  They're great for a weekend away or for laundry.  I've started coveting and collecting them.  I have more than 5 of them.

But my oldest bestest dirtiest one has my grandad's return address written on it.  Obviously he died in France and that duffel bag was returned to his widow.
