Title: squats
Post by: CushingRW on April 08, 2008, 07:47:50 AM
405 X 6
Pussy or not?

5'9 190 pounds

I never see anyone in the gym squatting this much, but then again, no one at golds where I live really squats at all.

Not pussy. Good for your bwt if  training for BB'ing only. Trouble is, being a big fish in a small pond, you can not really gage yourself as to how good your lift may be. I wonder how many guy's who post here can handle 405, for respectable reps, in regular squat workouts?   As long as you break a little below parallel you have a legit lift. Good Luck.

Cant really comment unless we see a vid...have seen too many people rack up huge numbers on the bar but then only go down a few inches with each rep.

If below parallel/ATG with a free bar, then IMO that's a great weight to be repping with.

good lift i still hit 405 for 6 to 8 reps and I'm 41 so that should be the norm for most guys who lift regularly...

A video?
Dude.. come on.
Unless I"m doing a riddiculous lift, or am a professional bb'er, I'm not having someone video tape me squatting 400 pounds in the gym.

Definitely not ass to grass, but my ass is below my knees on all but maybe the last rep.

No smith machine.

I normally am doing

20X135
12X225
8X315
2 sets 405 one set of 6, 1 of failure (usually 4 on second set)

Cut out that high rep shit on warmup sets--you know, there's a reason they call it "warm up" ::) --and you might find you can get 406x7 or 8.  Just a thought.  Try this:

5x135
5x225
3x315

I used to not do the high rep warmup set, and my knees would hurt BADLY at the top of the rep, and very
bottom of the rep.

If you need to do THAT many warmup reps, otherwise your knees kill you, you might wanna see a sports medicine doctor because that sounds pretty strange.

Those are impressive numbers, better than most on this forum. Whether all the way down or not really doesn't matter re: effectiveness and amount lifted, it's impressive. Sometimes full ROMs are harder on the knees.

I won't get into it, but I think I have the Dr. part covered.

It's due to a worn meniscus.

What are your numbers?

careful on the heavy squats then. if i was you i'd limit myself to higher reps. more than that, DEFINITELY dip under parallel. that way it's your hips that take the brunt of the load when changing direction and not your knees.

as for panda, i don't know if he squats as much these days, but he's a big damn fella. don't worry about him.

Actually 135X1X20 should not be all that demanding. Some guy's just need that extra warm up time/thigh stretch. Not wanting to go cold turkey on any serious weight at first. Of course you do not want to leave your best efforts drained by too much  effort getting ready for squats or any other lift. I will do between 50 to 100 Hindu squats before any leg work. Than I do 20-30 fast reps with just the bar, sometimes held overhead like when doing snatches.

The warm up and the stretch on the thighs can be very important. General rule, more warm blood in a area, less chance of major injury. Lots of pro's and con's about going ass to the grass though. Good Luck.

I'm pretty sure that in a knife fight to the death,a retard would beat an old guy just about every time,so I'm gonna say retards are stronger
