Bodybuilding peaked in the early 90's. It's been all downhill from there.

The problem isn't bodybuilding, the problem is not the lack of fans/support...the problem is those who run it.

Not completely. The problem is bodybuilding as a spectator sport is boring and gay. Training yourself is a hobby and sport that can be fun; watching a bunch of guys in thongs up on a stage is weird. The two most successful shows, the Arnold and ASC are successful only because they have been able to "package" the bb competition with tons of other activities and attractions. If they were just the shows themselves, they would be as unsuccessful as the Colorado Pro.
In the early 90's there was more interest initially, so they tried it on TV. Once people realized it was boring and there wasn't much to it, they lost interest.

The excuses for why bodybuilding can't be on TV are old. It's not even mentioned anymore, as if it can't be done. Are we to believe that if the IFBB really wanted to get a few shows on FitTV or Versus or Spike, it couldn't be done?

exactly. Why do you think UFC guys and wrestlers are brought in to Expos? No one outside of the boards knows who Kai Greene or Melvin Anthony is. They need more name recgoniton to get people to the expos.

The UPN broadcasts were called " Arnolds Rock & Roll Bodybuilding "

Honesty, I agree with Goatboy. Most of the strength sports/hobbies are pretty boring. Most people aren't going to sit through the various posedowns, 3 lift attempts, or c/j and snatch attempts.
The only thing I think might have a chance now on the big networks is, maybe, Strongman comps.
Also back in the late 70's - early 80's, you had a few other things that helped it a bit.
On the Olympic Lifting side you had lots of records being broken, plus East vs. West battles.
Strongman/Powerlifting had lots of neat personalities. You might even find current NFLers or small time celebrities competing in a show.
The bodybuilding side had plenty of charismatic stars too. Now, for every cool bodybuilder, you have 10 that are about as charismatic as a cinder block.
-----------
Also, I doubt any major network would touch a known heavily drugged sport anymore without it having a already built in audience like say, Football, wrestling, etc......

This thread would have been useless without this pic.

yes the whole country had the priviledge of witnessing a massive levrOWNING 8)

The UPN broadcasts were horrible. They must have been filmed and edited by people who knew nothing about bodybuilding. Production looked like it was done by community college tv/film students.

it sure does, especially with getbig being in crisis mode.

Levrone's wife @3:00 looks pretty hot, aside from that gum chewing habit. Maybe the only bb wife I've seen, with a good face, aside from Kamali's.

Arnold's rock and roll bodybuilding broadcasts looked like something from your local public access channel. They dubbed over the posing music with rock music, totally lame. The NBC SportsWorld shows were well produced, but only 1/2 hour long, which left about 20 minutes after commercials. Attempts to make bodybuilding more interesting always fail, whether it's rock and roll bodybuilding or the Olympia challenge round. It is what it is, so if it's on TV it needs to run in real time, without talking over the posing music or dumbing down the show.

The problem with the UPN Arnold show was whoever they had doing the editing didn't know how to time the posing with the rock music. Whoever they assigned to do it obviously wasn't much of a bodybuilding fan. Whoever does those bodybuildingdungeon.com clips of Levrone "gets it" and can put that stuff together well. Rob (240) used to be able to put posing to music together pretty well too but I don't think he ever did much with it.

Arnold and Sly were the biggest movie stars in the world at the time. Wearing baggies and a T-Micheal was actually cool. Those were some good times

That negativity is not needed, thankyou.

Levrone was absolute perfection.
