It seems crazy as I should base my decisions for graduate studies soley on academic criteria but I called to ask about the socalled sports centre and I asked if there was a squat rack, to which the man replied no. Am I crazy or should I just eliminate said university from my list because I won't be able to do squats (they don't even have a smith machine)....freaking out...is it legimitate?
What would you do?

put a squat rack in the living room of your dorm room.

With what money? I am going to be poor again.... :-\
In any event it's fucking outrageous...fucking sports centre....I can't imagine I am the only one who lifts who might go there...problem is, it has the #3 department in the field after Oxford and Cambridge and I am very tempted to say yes....but the 'gym' sounds so ghetto (and I don't mean dungeon like; that would be good); just sparse. Fucking insane. :-\ :-\ :-\

Squat racks will destroy your lower back....just ask Frank Zane.
The squat causes compression of the vertebrae....stay away from this nasty exercise.

Are you kidding?
-
The squat is a very unnatural movement.
Having weight on your shoulders and then squatting causes full vertebrae compression.
The spinal cord is very sensitive, a small shift can carry with it life long pain and immobility.....
Just dont squat if you want to maintain spinal integrity.

And what do you do for legs then?
-
I'd look for something else to place the bar on, about shoulder height, and then remove it from that position and squat. My first inclination would be a bench press. Get the bar on your shoulders, stand up, and walk out a few feet.
-
do they have a smith machine? surely you can find some solution.

Hint: Sean doesn't train legs.

-
maybe they have leg extensions
-
Sounds bad...very bad.... :o
We have a mix of items. On the resistance machines we have:
Leg press
Hamstring curl - seated & prone
Leg Press - seated
Leg extension - seated
Abductor / Adductor
Overhead press
Chest Press
Pectoral Fly
Back Extension
Lat Pull Down
Seated Row
Torso Twist
All Cybex machines
On the free weights, we are not a specialist weights facility as we
cater
for a broad cross section of fitness requirements however our free
weights
range consists of....
Olympic Bench Press - Up to 100 kg (Plates 10, 15, 25 kgs)
Dumbells in various combinations from 2 kg through to 37 kg
Fixed barbells from 10 - 55 kg
Mixed fitballs and a few light medicine balls.
There are specific areas for use of free weights. We do not have smiths
machine, squat rack, but do have a pull-up / dips machine and a single
cable machine.
An additional double cable machine is due to arrive in early May.
Obviously we have a mix of CV machines as well.

If this school has the academic quality you desire, I'd hardly consider eliminating it, simply due to their lack of gym equipment. I went through something similar my freshman year of college. I had to drag my old cement weights to my dorm room, because the gym equipment was lacking and the big weight room was reserved for the football players. Fortunately, I got a great Christmas present: A Bally membership (Premiere Plus), which allowed me to train at any Bally fitness center or club affiliated with Bally in the country.
I still have and use that membership.
From what you've described, the dumbbells go up to about 80 lb (37 kg) and the "fixed barbells" (presumably for curls, mainly) max at 120 lb (55 kg). You may be better served getting a gym membership. This school appears to be outside the USA; so, I'm not all that familiar with the franchises you could join at a fairly cheap price.
-
Walking lunges with your roomate on your shoulders. It works in the slammer.
-
Always do deads...
terrible exercise...
Your education is more important than a squat rack, kid. I hope this thread is a joke. :-\
-
Start a power lifting/weight lifting club at the university and ask the student's union to give you money to buy equipment.

Dang, they sure must've disliked you. ;)

why workout at the uni then ::)
-
I'd recommend dropping out of school, working the desk at a Gold's Gym for the next 20 years. You'll top out @$9hr, but I guarantee, you'll have a few nice squat racks to choose from.
You're welcome in advance. ;)

Squatting will destroy your lower back. Ask any broken down Pro and they will tell you the squat rack is responsible for spinal column injuries.

you sound like some jock anal fucked your girl then sent her home to you so that you can cook breakfast for her?
-
Squats are just down right dangerous. Too much load is placed on the vertebrae...For christ sake, it is obvious how potentially damaging squatting can be....and for that matter, Deadlifts too....Hey Dipshits the human body was not designed that way....

What school is this?
Rather than ask about what equipment they have in the gym visit the school, tour the facilities, and see for yourself. It may be that the person you talked with didn't even know what a squat rack is. Maybe the fitness center has other equipment that you would find compelling. There are a lot of "maybes" here but evaluating a gym via telephone doesn't make much sense to me.
If your are serious about graduate school you won't have much time for the gym anyway; there aren't many beefy doctorates or MA/MS degree holders out there. You may soon find out why.
-
Epic trying to make yourself sound hardcore. Everyone knows you don't even lift, much less squat. Stop pretending.

Meh, that's the problem with academics; they are either fat or skinny ascetics....I will look in town....turning down a great uni because of a gym would be silly....
-
I always make major life decisions based on gym amenities. I turned down a flight on the space shuttle because they didn't have a juice bar.

It's not always possible to visit a school ahead of time when applying to several different programs. That type of travel could become very expensive. Nowadays most large universities have pics of their facilities online.

you dont need squats to have great legs. just kick ass on hack squats and leg presses and do smith machine front squats and leg extensions and do dumbell suqtas

That's a bullshit excuse. What is required to lift/stay in shape? 5 hours a week? I managed to do it in graduate school, it shouldn't be that hard for him... just don't waste time on useless shit (like getbig :D).

yeah, i was 40 pounds (some fat, some muscle) heavier in college, because i was forced to leave the house every day, and I went to the gym between classes because i didn't really like most of my classmates.
you have to do a lot of reading in college. do it on a treadmill. do it in the 3-4 minutes you rest between sets.
besides, if you are going to school at a good school, you'll have shopping centers around it, and youll find a gym in there, guaranteed. besides, an olympia weight set and sq rack is total 400, tops. if you can afford tuition, you can afford that. books alone will be 500 to 1000 per semester, i promise that lol...

Yes, for grad school. Undergrad at Georgetown in DC. Strangely, back when I applied to those schools, the number of squat racks available wasn't on my list of criteria.

If the student has not yet been admitted to the degree program then this entire conversation is premature. If he has been admitted he should easily be able to narrow his decision to 1-3 programs and visit the the one school he is most likely to attend. In addition, conversations with current grad students can easily be arranged to scope out campus life and resources.

I have been admitted and travel is impossible. I am contractually bound to my work here in East Asia until the end of July. I cannot 'just hop by' and visit.
The decision is essentially made; I will most likely be going to the University of York. Now it is just a matter of hammering out tuition fees as they want em to pay overseas and I am an EU citizen...fucking ridiculous.

I am an EU citizen...
Interesting terminology. Are people in Europe, at least the younger generations, starting to view themselves more as "citizens of the EU" as opposed to just citizens of France, Germany, Italy, whatever? (serious question, not being sarcastic). I understand the legal structure, I'm more interested in the mindset and worldview.

Well...you are right. I should say a citizen of an EU country. I happen to be Hungarian in addition to American. To me it is just a means to an end; huge labour market open to me.
From a personal point of view I feel more 'European' than American but I wouldn't define that by country. I would go by overall worldview and approach to things.

Man zahlt nichts, also man bekommt nichts.
