Almost beat Lee Haney in 82-and it was very close.

Looked unreal at the USA in 85????

Funny, after losing a close one to Haney and Haney winning 8 O's, how he was never given his pro card.

This might be why, best HVYWT line up in history;

Every one of those guys looked awesome, would win most pro shows nowadays. Ronnie was already showing signs of greatness.

That was the best nationals line-up ever

Overall Winner Kevin Levrone

HeavyWeight
1   Kevin Levrone

2   Ken Wheeler (Flex)

3   Paul Demayo

4   Ronnie Coleman

5   Matt Mendenhall

6   Bob Cicherillo

7   Chris Cormier

8   Edgar Fletcher

What a top 8 !    Mendenhall and Edgar Fletcher might be the 2 greatest to never win their pro cards. I guess you could make a case for Rory Leidelmeyer too. But overall has to be the best single National's class ever.

1983's Heavyweight class was pretty good too.

Overall Winner Bob Paris

HeavyWeight
1   Bob Paris

2   Rory Leidelmeyer

3   Mike Christian

5   Matt Mendenhall

6   Rich Gaspari

12   Ron Love

As well as 1982's

Overall Winner Lee Haney

HeavyWeight
1   Lee Haney

2   Matt Mendenhall

3   Tim Belknap

4   Bob Paris

5   Mike Christian

7   Mike Quinn

13   J J Marsh

But neither can year can top 1991's Heavyweight Class.

What was the commentator alluding to when he said that Matt hasn't won a pro card because of his "personal life".

"personal life" usually means recreational drugs (I'm not saying Matt used them but that's what it usually means when they refer to a bodybuilders negative "personal life")

i agree Matt should have been a pro! (everyone from Golds Gym Everett Mass went to that "91 nationals" to see Paul Demayo compete...sickess line-up ever!)
that to me was bodybuildings "golden era" (i was to young when Arnold was dominating)
those guys were awesome! (levrone,fletcher,demayo,flex,cormier,etc)
i went to golds gym in the early 1990's and all these guys were at the gym training (very friendly...went to sum club Roxy/ roxbury? cormier worked at had a blast!)

was a special time/place in history for bodybuilding!

Every one of those guys looked awesome, would win most pro shows nowadays.

I blame it all on GH and insulin.  diuretics, site injections, and maybe 3-4 other chemicals too.

if you want a pro level but still aesthetically pleasing physique, limit yourself to anabolic steroids.
