Title: Skin cancer
Post by: Butterbean on April 15, 2008, 08:46:20 AM
I recently read an article where a gal found a spot on the top of her scalp.  By the time she found it the docs think it had been there a year.  They treated her but it was too late. :(

When doing checks for strange moles/spots, please don't forget under your head hair!  And also look closely at the skin beneath your nail beds.

Was she blonde with thin hair?   :-\

...and what do you look for under the nailbed?  Moles can't grow there.

Yes..blonde w/thin hair

Nailbed...I've read that people have seen spots on their nail beds under the nail which did turn out to be skin cancer.

Always wear a (wide rimmed) hat if you are going to be out in the sun for any amount of time (more than 5 minutes).  You don't have to flee from the sun if you are engaged in normal activity like walking from your house to car, shopping, etc.  But prolonged exposure (and damage) can happen when you aren't even thinking about it, like working in the garden, going to the beach, playing sports, watching sports from the bleachers, watching your kids on the playground, walking your dog, etc.  I always keep a couple hats in the trunk of my car in case I need one.
