'The Squat' is an exercise that places a large amount of stress on the lower back.

Squatting causes unnatural compression of the vertebrae.

Prolonged squatting will  alter the functionality of the spinal column, resulting in pain and loss of movement.

Advice:  If you want to maintain spinal integrity dont Squat.  There are many viable alternatives.

1. Lifting technique
2. Lumbar Spine
3. Injury mechanics.

Look, the squat is an ergonomic nightmare.

Firstly, appreciate the structure and intricacies of the spinal column/central nervous system.

The force and unnatural loading of this movement causes  pressure on the pads between each vertebrae. Nerve damage and misalignment are the unfortunate results.

Sean had short stumpy legs; the short-mans-physique.  Lower centre of gravity means less biomechanical issues.

Taller men, with long lean quads, find it difficult to make any gains by squatting.

Just be weary of the squat and deadlift.  Just not good if you want to maintain optimal spinal health.

i am 6'4 and added mass with the squat.  one thing i found usefull was lighter weight with higher reps (around 15-18), and this has added more than 8 reps with heavier weight...

Strict form is crucial when squatting with heavy weight.  Light weight and higher reps is certainly the way to go.  The quads are a huge muscle group.  By there very nature they can tolerate high volume.

Squatters run into problems when they fatigue.  The onset of fatigue brings about a compromising of technique. The resulting poor technique can result in spinal injury.

Use machines....  The leg extension and leg curl. For fantastic results, just go high volume.

And yes, be careful with the 'leg press machine'. Not only does it place undue pressure on the lower back but also wreaks havoc on the knees; patella tendon particularly.

Come on son, Sean built an incredible physique.  He relied upon free weights and machines.  And yes, Sean was not a fan of the smith machine.

Sean felt that the 'squatting action' placed too much direct pressure on his lower back....In summary, train hard but train smart.

Peace.

I had to back off on my heavy squatting recently.  I was having some pains in my lower back and apparently I was pinching a disc or something.  My chiropractor had me stop doing squats for the time being and my lower back feels much better.

why don;t they go to medical school then?

i am sure they are well trained, in ohio, there was a report of 2 broken necks caused by chiropractors.

all i am saying, is that if you want real, sound medical advices, see a MD, not a "Mr. Rick"

see a PN&R (physical med) doc, they are excellent at what they do.

simple, the reason is they didn't have the grades or MCAT scores to get into medical school, Chiro school is EASY AS SHIT to get into, we have one of the best ones in the country here in STL called Logan College and it's easy as shit to get into, you can fulfill all your pre requisites at the Community College, no joke.

Oh shit, I know two people who went there.   This one oughta get you guys.  My brother actually got put on a fucking wait list to get into marquette's dental school because they have a quota to fill for fucking minorities and women.  He found out that he had a higher GPA and entrance exam scores than nearly all the minorities and women that got accepted ahead of him.  What a fucking joke that was.
