What is the heaviest set of dips you have seen? Im curious where i stand. I hit a personal best of 4 plates (180lbs) + 10lb belt + my 225lbs bodyweight today for 3.5 reps....not too bad i dont thin....thats 415lbs total

i make this spinach artichoke dip thats pretty heavy, snaps regular chips in half so you have to use triscuits or tostitos gold.

Dips aren't really something to do "3.5" reps on, brother. If you're going that heavy you're just begging to lose both your shoulders. Good chance you're not going deep either. I don't think I've ever seen anyone strap on more than a 100 pound dumbbell and do a set with good form.

I've only known two people that have torn their pecs, both doing dips.

I don't know about chest, but I've seen a few guys hurt their shoulders doing dips. One guy even ripped his completely out of joint thinking he'd be Superman and strap three 45s onto the dip belt. The only thing using plates while doing dips ever did for me was get my nuts pinched in the chain.

By far Roy Callendar daily would do FULL dips with two 150 lb DB's hanging from a chain around his waist. Not these stupid half reps the guys do today. Plus he did full chinups the same way. I remember he said to me "I wish I had a nickel for every rep I have done"

To be honest 4plate dips is great. My personal favourite lift of yours is you pushing the big truck up a 2mile hill because there was no petrol in it. Thats pretty hardcore.

my friend at 150lbs can do deep full reps with 180lb for maybe 5/6
Myself at 230 full deep reps can do fresh 6 maybe 7 reps with 180b attached.

Only a retard would do dips with that much weight
not only does it put extreme stress on your pecs near the bottom of the movement but it will also eventually wreck your shoulders and rotator cuffs.

I saw a guy with the last name Nesser or Nessar? His first name was Issac.
He was freaky huge. Probably a 65" chest and at least 25" arms.
I watched him pull off a set of 30 with 900lbs around his waist. We had to estimate the weight because he had five 100lb plates through a chain loop and then strapped a car engine to a special attachement he made for his back.

unfortunately only recent vid i have is a preexhausted vid of 3 reps with 80kg halfway through workout with 180lbs.
i do however have a clearer older one of my at 220 doing reps with 157lbs.

in the past i never had problems with doing them. its an great excercise but i now skip them.

Did dips for a while, After heavy shoulders, and heavy cgbp , I got up to 70 kg weights + 108 kg bodyweight + belt ( it was very light belt , crap quality, It got tore in half later on when I did dips with it)
Hurt my shoulders, and the dips handles were too far apart. The reps were also deep. But imo dips are not a favourable exercise to go heavy on.

at times when i hury my shoulders and cant bench or incline without pain i can always always dip for some reason. i am the perfect chape for them or fit nicely in my gym dip station.
imo they are a better exercise than bench pressing. though bench pressing is a better chets exercise.

Just a quick tip for the very heavy dippers here...
In general guys who build up to very, very heavy weights on the dip tend to tear/damage their pectoralis minor insertions (edge of armpit) and/or grind all the cartilage off their elbows and shoulders. Tears of the rotator cuff are also pretty common as are twisting injuries to the shoulder girdle.
The problem is one of leverage...
Most gyms changed over to "safety" dip bars back in the early 80s as 70s style dips (very narrow) were simply too difficult for most trainees. Wider "safety" bars changed the exercise into a sort of decline bench press (think about it, the leverages are the same) and offered a trainee stuck in the bottom position the option of popping out... whereas narrow dip bars leave you stuck in the bottom position (especially if you're a dwarf like me and your feet don't reach the ground).
The best option is to dip with the old fashioned narrow bars (hip width, maybe 18 inches apart) while maintaining an upright posture (don't lean forward) and keeping the elbows out.
I've seen lots of guys who dip with a 100 lbs for reps find themselves unable to manage even a few reps with their bodyweight once the handles are narrower and their elbows are out (as opposed to pointing them backwards)... surprisingly, changing over to strict, narrow dips will add inches to already large arms.
With narrow dips, you add weight to your feet (to stop leaning forward) as opposed to around the waist.
When you can do narrow, upright dips with just a hundred pounds attached to your feet you'll have 20 inch arms.
Just a tip...

An old buddy of mine John Pezzote weighing in at 265 did 6 good reps with a hundred pound dumbell in the front and another hundred pounder in the back both on dipping belts....had an official 505 bench press with a two second pause and both his squat and deadlift were 650 pounds.
