Title: More on race - Sacramento principal under fire for trying to help Black students
Post by: Tre on April 17, 2008, 11:24:00 PM

Funny one in Sactown this week...

A school principal is coming under attack from parents who disagree with her bringing all the low-achieving Black students into the cafeteria to talk to them as a group about their poor test scores.  It was supposed to be a wake-up call as she hoped to light a fire beneath them...not by embarrassing them, but by encouraging them.

She did the same thing a day later with low-achieving Latino students.

Parents are outraged.  This speaks directly to what was mentioned in the other recent thread - people being attacked for stressing academic achievement as a vehicle to success for Black students.

They have to keep focus on their basketball careers. Can't do it all!

No, seriously. They were attacked by who? Black parents, white parents, both?
I think isolating a certain racial group like that isn't good. Instead of minimising the importance of race you are actually stressing it. Why can't she just invite ALL low-performing students.

Stress on academic achievement is something you grow up with anyway (that's why asians and jews are so successful). A speech in school might have a slight temporary effect if anything.

Tre,
I'm gonna go out on a limb here and assume the outrage by parents had nothing to do with her speaking with their kids, encouraging them, ...or stressing the importance of academic achievement.
I think the outrage probably stemmed from her decision to racially segregate the students in order to do it.
Just a hunch.  ;)

Judi,

Dumbasses should be segregated.

It's good the principal was trying to help them....  only sad thing is the next person will learn from this and decide to not waste time.

well you just made your position on the subject clear - 1. denial 2. stubbornness

these two things get us nowhere as a species, hope this helps.

{LOL} I guess she should have segregated them based on intellect rather than on race then huh?

possibly, ...or will learn from this that segregating students based on race might land them in a bit of hot water.  :-\

Parents are the responsible ones here. Blaming the school ignores why they were segregated out in the first place.

Maybe you'd like it better if all the dumbasses and parents were sent to a nice camp with a sign that says "Work brings freedom" over the gate.

Those kids need an education and the school tried helping them. The saddest thing is that people who do really care will be less likely to invest in other underperforming students, even though some of them might be saved.

F that, they should be glad somebody noticed and is trying to help. When I was student teaching, I took my lunch period, went and knocked on the door of the Principle office, who was black, and ask if there could be a after school study period for low achieving black males. He said he'll look into it . It was called the Dragon Club, for at risk males, a sister version was soon started. A a guy who was a promoter and former Chicago Bulls player provided the avenue (and revenue) for the Dragon Club. This was at Annapolis Middle School. I noticed the problem, I took action.

Yet, these idiot parents complain about someone caring to something for their kids.

Amen, Parker...congratulations - and THANK YOU - for the success of the program you created.

When I was a kid, any adult had license to tell us when we were being knuckleheads.  They had the responsibility for helping to raise us when we were outside the view of our parents.

Most of us and most of the parents appreciated it.

When it was my turn to teach, though, not a single parent of my students supported me in my efforts to turn their ignorant, disrespectful little boys into young men.  When I stressed discipline and hard work, I got no support at all from the parents OR the school administration.

These kids were used to doing whatever the hell they wanted to and at the end of the year, I was 'downsized' out of the faculty due to 'numerous parent complaints' about my teaching methods and strict demands.  While it's doubtful I would've returned anyway, it was surprising that they were dismissing the only teacher who could teach math and science above the 7th-grade level, let alone the only one who really gave a damn about those students.

The African American community has a very difficult time accepting responsibility over education and other cultiral issues. Somehow I just don't see the problem changing anytime in the near future.

I believe the reason why, is there are people in the community who want to present a "boogie man" as the reason why they are failing... And said people don't stress taking responsibility for one's actions and community...These people are the real sellouts. Instead of stressing action and a real in depth look, they wanna march all over the damn place. Marching don't do shit, except wear  the soles of shoes out. For every problem there is a solution. It takes those people who see the problem to find a solution.

I agree whole-heartedly

You just quoted John Henrik Clarke. He said the same thing in a doc about his life produced by Wesley Snipes.
It was called "John Henrik Clarke: A Great & Mighty Walk". I highly recommend you see it.  I give it (http://www.jaguarenterprises.net/images/thumbup.gif)  (http://www.jaguarenterprises.net/images/thumbup.gif) way up

LMAO!

Actually Weez I don't see a problem with what she did (unless the lunch room was full at the time)

Personally, I would rather someone confront me face to face (so to speak) and in private. She could have posted their test scores on a bulletin board  in the hallway for all to see but she sorted out the under achievers and spoke to them directly.

Maybe a better way would have been to talk to the student and parent privately but I don't have a problem with the way she handled this.

Parents of under acheivers will always bitch and complain to avoid the real issue. As Doc Jake said: (I will edit)

Some Americans have a

very difficult time accepting responsibility over education and other cultiral issues...

Unfortunately Doc J is correct, it will take generations to change this attitude.
