Title: A hungry man is an angry man
Post by: w8tlftr on April 24, 2008, 05:27:09 AM
Climbing corn prices have ignited Mexican tortilla riots. Enraged citizens in Egypt and Pakistan — potential Muslim powder kegs — have also violently protested premium prices for basic staples. Similar instability has erupted from the Ivory Coast to Indonesia. Resurrecting the defeated “import substitution” model of yore, India and Vietnam are among the nations that lately have prohibited grain exports and imposed government price controls. Kazakhstan, Earth’s No. 5 wheat source, just halted wheat exports, hoping to hoard local supplies. One third of the global wheat market is now closed.

No wonder so many people in that part of the world are so happy.

However, the article is about how the BS corn subsidies and greed are playing their part in this manufactured food problem.

Worst idea since books on tape.

Why is books on tape a bad idea?

People stop reading. Bad idea.

Just another example of some things in life being too damn convenient.

The brain is like any other muscle and needs exercise and stimulation.

Television is fine (in moderation). I usually just watch BSG and the news (infotainment?).

It's all about balance.

I know for a fact that I retain and learn several times better by listening than by reading.  However, I don't buy the books on tape and choose to stick it out with reading even though I retain a fraction of what I would with listening.  I am working to improve this.

I've found that the more I read (topics that genuinely interest me) the better my long term retention is.

It's hard for me too. I have the attention span of a gnat and usually have a gazillion things racing through my melon.  :P

Hmmm.... maybe you guys could give your opinion on the article.

You know, the one about how the cost of food skyrocketing and how wheat exports are closed... people eating dirt cookies.... how corn subsidies are bullshit and how it's bad for the environment?

Maybe you'll just wait to give your opinion until you can't afford beef, chicken, or fish and become wimpy girlie men from lack of protein.  :-\

Corn subsidies are bad for the environment in many ways.

For one, it diverts a significant portion of the food supply towards energy, while driving up the prices.

Two, ethanol may be renewable, but it attracts moisture resulting in even more water collecting in fuel tanks.
Anyone living in a colder climate can tell you what ice pellets in your fuel tank do to your fuel injector systems.

Would contribute more, ...but I have a plane to catch.

Food shortages will reach the US soon.   Actually theres plenty of grain, just alot of bureaucratic BS to mess things up.

There are reports now that farmers that used to plant wheat and soy beans have stopped to jump on to the corn subsidy gravy train.

If there is a lot now I don't think it will stay that way for long since demand has not changed.
