Obama's ex-pastor gives fiery speech to NAACP
(http://i.l.cnn.net/cnn/2008/POLITICS/04/27/obama.wright.ap/art.wright.ap.jpg)
DETROIT, Michigan (AP) -- The outspoken former pastor of Barack Obama told an audience of 10,000 at an NAACP dinner on Sunday that despite what his critics say, he is descriptive, not divisive, when he speaks about racial injustices.
"I describe the conditions in this country," the Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr. said during the 53rd annual Fight for Freedom Fund Dinner held by the Detroit chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.
"I'm not here for political reasons," Wright said. "I'm not a politician. I know that fact will surprise many of you because many in the corporate-owned media made it seem like I am running for the Oval Office. I am not running for the Oval Office. I've been running for Jesus a long, long time, and I'm not tired yet."
By speaking at the event, Wright was following in the footsteps of Obama and the senator's rival for the Democratic presidential nomination, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, as well as former President Bill Clinton. It's a $150-a-plate fundraiser billed as America's largest sit-down dinner.
"I am not one of the most divisive" black spiritual leaders, he said. "I'm one of the most descriptive." Watch Wright say it wasn't his aim to address his critics »
Wright received a long, loud standing ovation.
He became an issue in the presidential race in March after the circulation of videos of old sermons in which he accused the U.S. government of racism and accused it of flooding black neighborhoods with drugs.
In a sermon days after the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, Wright said that "America's chickens are coming home to roost" after it dropped atomic bombs on Japan and that the United States "supported state terrorism against the Palestinians and black South Africans."
The videos, circulated widely on television and the Internet, knocked Obama's presidential campaign off stride. The Illinois senator distanced himself from the comments of Wright, whom he has known for 20 years.
The Rev. Wendell Anthony, president of the Detroit NAACP, said at a news conference before the dinner that he was excited to invite the "hottest brother in America right now."
"It just presented an opportunity for us to be able to set the record straight outside of any political consideration," Anthony said.
Wright, who is retiring as pastor of the 8,000-member Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, is scheduled to speak Monday to the National Press Club in Washington.

The NAACP is a joke.

LOL @ people who put this pastor's belief before every other issue.

"100 more years in iraq! The economy is strong" - Mccain.
correct, it's ridiculous
I really don't think many people are voting on the Wright issue, anyway
it is an excuse for racists to use when they'd never vote for Obama in the first place
great speech, by the way :)
-
I think he should listen to bill maher on this one and shut the fuck and and sit this one out.
-
LOL @ people who put this pastor's belief before every other issue.
"100 more years in iraq! The economy is strong" - Mccain.
It is true, this is unprecidented that they have to dig so deap into a guys shit and not find anything to the point where they resort to digging into the guy's pastor... I'll tell you what people, if they ever have to dig into your candidate's pastor for dirt on you, you found the right guy.
-
I think he should listen to bill maher on this one and shut the fuck and and sit this one out.
Bill Maher should shut the fuck up
he is not part of the black community, he just likes to screw black women
-
Bill Maher should shut the fuck up

not... his timing doesn't help Obama at all and that's all Bill Maher is saying. If you look at my posts you'll see I'm as critical of Bill as I am supportive. He's off an on. He's on here. This dude should sit down and shut the fuck up if he gives a rats ass about Obama. He can tell his story any time and especially tell his story if Obama is elected. He helped Jack shit nothing and actually hurt Obama with his recent interviews.

Rev. Wright has a right to speak whenever he wants
His speech only affects racists who wouldn't vote for Obama anyway, this is just an excuse.
Race was going to become an issue sooner or later because America is a racist country...
If you're gonna go down anyway, go down swingin'

It’s a Black Thing
If you can't jump or dance, you can't understand me, Wright explains.
The message was clear: Back off black churches. The attack on Wright’s oratory was an attack on black culture by whites who historically don’t understand black traditions, who think blacks are deficient, who think whites are superior.

Wright says criticism is attack on black church
He said his Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago has a long history of liberating the oppressed by feeding the hungry, supporting recovery for the addicted and helping senior citizens in need. He said congregants have fought in the military, including in Afghanistan and Iraq.
"My goddaughter's unit just arrived in Iraq this week while those who call me unpatriotic have used their positions of privilege to avoid military service while sending over 4,000 American boys and girls to die over a lie," he said.

I understand and, to some degree, identify with his anger. It's his delivery that needs work.
-
This guy is an angry racist who uses rhetoric from the past. Some (I said some) of the things he preached are disturbing. His way of criticizm through anger is old. The less the public hears from this guy, the better. He is not bringing us together and he said a heck of a lot more than the few clips that are floating around.
We can argue about did Barack separate himself from this guy or not, but the argument is much clearer when we are talking about Wright himself.
-

he has a right to free speech not a right to promote racism. big difference your way off base.
his speech does nothing but prove that he is racist.

LOL.....you're like the CNN of Getbig....you spin it and still can't get it right..LOL!
actually he is absolutley right IMO....to say that whatever the pastor thinks is what obama thinks therefore dont vote obama is stupid. it is a very smart move by the repub's and fox news to spin it like this...
look at it like this
McCain SAID he is willing to keep us in the "war" for another 100 years
Wright said "blacks got a raw deal"
and obama fits in how???
-
Mal, if all he said was that historically blacks were oppressed, or 'got a raw deal', most people would agree and pay respect but this guys takes it further man, and with an angry tone...he definitely has some racist thoughts in him. I don't feel like searching for it but there was some clip where he was blaming the white man for....
It was pretty clear how he felt. He's not what we need right now for people to continue to come together. Also, his anger and yelling will continue to fuel the fires of resentment in some black people, which undoubtably does not contribute positively to success and moving forward. Its this kind of obsession with the past that continues to hold some sections of black Americans behind...and fires non-black to retaliate with their own complaints. Malproductive IMO...not to mention he is downright wrong with some of his preachings. What an ass...not just the AIDS but he also said white America put drugs in the black neighborhoods, please. The only motive for drugs is green.

I am the farthest thing from a scared white person you'll meet.
Additionally, I have a lot of good black friends...who by the way, don't focus on this kind of shit. All this ass is doing is making race relations more difficult.
Thanks for trying to dumb down this thread with your personal insults which you would not do in person.
-
Blanco, you just called me a dummy....nice. Lot of thought into that one champ. Why are you so angry? Again, nice way to "dumb" down the debate with insults. Probably wasting my thoughts with your lack of intellect.
The Tuskeegee experiments began in 1932. Lets see, how long ago was that and how much has our culture progressed from then? Stop focusing on the past, its 2008 for christ sake.
-
Ironically, I would peg Blanco as the racist in this thread. Hate white men much? ::)

Penicillin was discovered in 1947, but not given to the subjects, even though it would have cured them.
It went on until 1972, and ony stopped then, because it leaked to the press.
When you realize that HIV started from polio vaccinations we gave out in the mid-50s....
Well, then it seems a little silly to say "it was so long ago". Jewish people have every right to still criticize hitler, and that was 1940s. I think people have the right to still be upset about something that only ended in 1972 because it leaked lol

Blacks should NEVER forget the past...do you expect Jews to "forget" the holocaust?
I'm sure Rev. Wright doesn't focus on these topics every Sunday, but its fearful whites like this who pick up on it and act like fearful little mice full of guilt.
I'm not angry...why are you so fearful when blacks show emotion?
Talking about such topics no more makes you "racist" than talking about the Gettysburg Address or any other historical event.
dummy

Fear of what? Jiggaboos? Please. ::)
You sound like a blatant racist in this thread. You've attacked white people more than once in this thread alone. It's pretty obvious that you have a deeply ingrained dislike, distrust and envy of them. Most of your posts on Getbig not involving your fixation to Squadfather's scrotum have racial undertones. And you're calling who racist?

Must hurt knowing you were born inferior to the white man. That's why you've attached yourself to this clown's nutsack.
Lot of deep seated hostility you have. :-\

LOL
Blame whitey
No 'race' can be blamed for it.
A group of doctors did illegal things to a group of Americans.
Their race is irrelevant. Why they were never prosecuted, well, that's a good Q...
-

who's displaying racism now, ugly? :P
-
The Tuskeegee experiments were appauling. Those scientists (who are dead now) should feel great remorse. That makes me angry and would have made a lot of white people angry if we knew about it (thankfully I wasn't born yet). The main experiments were in the 30s, 40s & 50s. Tertiary syphilis cannot be treated well in its last stage... treatment at this phase may cure the disease but it cannot repair or reverse the damage that occurred before treatment.
Nonetheless, when AIDS came out in the 1980s, it was a very different time and its completely different now in 2008, except for people like this who focus on the past and incite anger and resentment. Its ignorant and irresponsible for Wright to blame the government for AIDS and drugs and also his multiple comments on whites. He's said a lot of racist shit and I don't like it. I hate racists of either race. Stupidity.
Still hangin with that dummy crap huh blanco? ;)
-
who's displaying racism now, ugly? :P
I don't ever recall saying I didn't make racist comments. I'm just pointing out that you sound extremely hypocritical crying about racism when this guy and you are as racist as they come. You just hate whites so it's ok because we "stuck it to you" 175+ years ago. ::)
I'm not complaining about him. He's just saying those things to blow smoke up poor, black people's asses. He's an innocent fly.
Regardless, you are one bitter black man.
-
The NAACP is a joke.
Amen to that.
Fcuking tools.
How about working for civil rights.
NAACP has long been very excluding.
Civil rights are all about including everyone.
-
I hate racism. But the blacks are a very musical people.

you are just one "bitter white man" because I pointed out how ugly you are to the board after you were slammed and outed on this board
hence your following me around and observing all my posts re SF, etc :D
you ignored my posts for awhile as you cried yourself to sleep for your misfortune at being born hideous
I'd love for you to point out my racist posts that aren't obvious jokes or in response to being racially insulted...

what an ass
NAACP was created primarily by Jews in response to the racism blacks experienced in America
I won't say the org has been perfect in recent years, however the issues the NAACP has championed in the past were of benefit to all citizens
-
I just saw excerpts from the pastor's speech.
What a fcuking religious loon.
Not only is he a religious loon, but he's a blatant racist: bullshitting about how black people have a different tradition with "God".
Perhaps Wright doesn't know jack shit about Christianity.

Thank you for proving my point. Look at your post. It just screams, "Look at me! I hate everything and everyone that's not black." You showed just how much you hate whites a few months ago when you were railing against them in that thread against Squadfather where you were lying about how many white women you nailed.
Following you around? This is the first time I've addressed your tear-filled posts in the last 6+ months. I realized long ago that you're a 110 pound twink with an obvious hate for the white man. You really are one of the lamest posters on this site.
You don't think you're racist? Read your posts in this thread.
Regardless, don't smash your keyboard too much. It's your fault for dealing drugs instead of getting your GED. :-\

The main experiments were in the 30s, 40s & 50s.
They were letting people live tortured, untreated, in 1972. Then they got caught. Would they have done it in 1973 had then not been caught? Sure. 1975? 1980? 1990? 2008? Well, they had no moral qualms about doing it for the first 40 years...
Nonetheless, when AIDS came out in the 1980s
HIV was diagnosed in a small group of villiages in Africa in the late 1950s. It was a chimp strain. We had been testing polio vaccinations on groups of Africans. Photographs showed cages of chimps. It looked bad. They had some conferences on it - the doctor denied it, but the same people who got the shot, got aids, and the chimps being there was, well, unexplainable.
AIDS hit america in the 80s, correct.

So what is the implication? Did the Polio vaccine cause it or was it the villagers engaging in "Monkey Business?"

Let's point and laugh at the hypocrite!

So what is the implication? Did the Polio vaccine cause it or was it the villagers engaging in "Monkey Business?"
LOL... nobody had sex with the chimps. The working hypothesis is that the chimps carried the virus and their extract was introduced to the polio vaccine into the residents.
It's not really disputed that the people who got the vaccines got AIDs. The dispute comes from whether it was accidental or intentional. Some critics believe that it was intentionally done to see what HIV did. Others believe it was accidental and swept under carpet to not make us look bad.
I don't know which story I believe, and we may never know. The govt has samples of the african polio shot on file - and testing it would prove or disprove it easily - yet they choose not to test it.
-
Have you replied to any point I made?
???
What points? This thread isn't about you kid.
You've been whining since I called you out on hating whites.
You are clearly delusional. We have proof in this thread that you are a racist and white supremacist. As for me, when someone calls me a "spic" on this board I respond in a language they will understand. If I hated whites I would have no problem stating it, but I do not. Provide PROOF that I "hate whites", little Nicky. Until then you are just just another racist seeking company.
Notice you're the only clown in this thread supporting this retards comments? ::)
Maybe I am the only person that has balls. ;) If you read between the lines you can clearly deduce that there are those in this thread that don't see a big deal in Wright's comments. Besides, as an admitted racist it kind of makes your thoughts on this matter rather skewed.
Nice job editing your post after 15 minutes. Yup, I'm not in your head. :D
LOL You've got to be kidding. You are the one that made this about me with your tear-filled rant. I bet you've been saving up all your bitterness for a long time. ;D You even brought up an old post of mine that had nothing to do with you. S'up with that? :-\
Let's point and laugh at the hypocrite!
How so?
-
The funny thing is, while everyone is focused on race, the real problem is class.
In 2008, if your poor, it doesn't matter what color you are, you're rights, freedoms and respect usually don't get treated the same way as someone who is more well to do. That's a fact.
This Reverened is just stirring up shit and is trying to make it sound like only black people have it rough. There are many people getting fucked.
-
While it's possible that this 'pastor' has seen an increase in donations since his name became national news, I suspect it's more likely that the Clintons made him an offer he couldn't refuse and that's the reason why he won't shut up and go away.
It's obvious that neither he nor the NAACP has any desire to see Obama win the Presidency, otherwise Wright would've kept his mouth shut and the NAACP never would've brought him back into the media spotlight.
Black America needs organization, but more than that, we need some common sense, and people like the NAACP goons and Rev. Wright are working against that.
-

I read maybe 3 sentences of that every here and there. Talk about a meltdown. Love the irony littering that post. You claim to have balls, yet you talk more shit about other people's pics than 90% of the posters on here, all while not having the balls to post your own.
You're a hypocrite. You cry about racism and melt about it every time someone says something racist and here you are making racist comments and supporting a blatantly racist clown. Not that it matters, you're an idiot.
This pic sums up everything you and this "Reverend" are crying about.
-
I hate racism. But the blacks are a very musical people.
Don't forget they're great dancers and awesome cooks. ;D
LMAO at people who still define who they are (and others) by their skin color.
-
Unless they are true racists, I don't think the majority of white people dislike Blacks in general. In fact I'm sure they have no problem meeting a regular, decent black guy and even being friends with them. I think what most whites don't like and probably fear is your stereotypical, underwear showing, crack smoking, carjacking, illegitamate baby spawning, gangsta type who has no value for human life, neighborhood,or any form of societal structure. Unfortunately, a large contingent of these individuals exist and They are what white people do not like. I can't imagine even the Black Community as a whole would like or accept these predators. But it seems there's always a justification for these individuals like, "You don't understand their upbringing or It's socioeconomic" or other excuses. When these guys are out robbing and killing and they get arrested, it's blamed on a racist Law enforcement situation, like they should be cut slack from committing violent crime. Decent black people= No problem for most whites. Predatory Savage types=Problem for whites and all civilized people.

???
What does this have to do with anything?

Rev. Wright has a right to speak whenever he wants
His speech only affects racists who wouldn't vote for Obama anyway, this is just an excuse.
Race was going to become an issue sooner or later because America is a racist country...
If you're gonna go down anyway, go down swingin'
It has to do with the fact that you said America is a racist Country. Also, there were plenty of whites who would have voted for Obama that now will not because he first denied ever hearing his Pastor make any racist remarks. He comes across deceptive now. It's no different than if a presidential candidate was outed going to 20 years worth of David Duke speeches. Right or wrong, that guy would lose a lot of votes. Between The Wright association and his Pennsylvania remarks, Obama has seriously hurt his campaign.

I think I understand where you are coming from now, even though I find it rather pointless. :P You should have quoted me in the first place so that others would know the context of your response.
I don't see the "deceptive" angle you are portraying. I stand by me previous statement. This issue does not appreciably hurt Obama, as those who use this issue as a deciding factor in their decision making are looking for a public excuse not to vote for him anyway. These are the type that will say one thing to a pollster and do something else entirely in the voting booth.

True. This will hurt him in the general.

"Unless they are true racists, I don't think the majority of white people dislike Blacks". Absolutely man and where I am most people get along just fine. You'll always have some percentage of ignorant assholes who make judgements based race, religion, etc. Blanco, your just as bad as some of the white jerks who harbor racist feelings. We don't have the benefit of seeing you or your expressions, but the words you use when you type are not just 'emotional', they are often insulting. No reason for that shit man.
I've always gotten along well with most black dudes in the gym or with music, at school, wherever. If your ghetto or a gang banger, I probably won't like you no matter what race you are and I've ran into some of those people too. The point is that the more we come together, stop focusing on our ancestor's heritage/culture and start seeing us as Americans first (and race af ar 2nd), the better this country will be. People like Wright keep us in the past and keep racial fires burning by providing the gas. He's an asshole for continuing this stuff and right or wrong, he is hurting Obama. I understand some of his points historically speaking but our generation of Americans are much different. Understand but don't be stuck in the past.
Tre, your always a voice of reason. Guess that comes to more people as they get into their middle age yrs.

I don't know why you are quoting me, as this is not my opinion. You need to go back and re-read my statements. lol

I suppose you may believe that I should apologize for my statements. I will not. The fact that blacks and whites "get along" where you are from is meaningless. People are more cordial nowadays and overt racism is frown upon. That does not negate institutional racism that is alive and well. Ask the blacks where you are from if they ever experience racism or if it has ever impacted their lives. Most [with a brain] will say yes, whether it be slights on the job, treated with disrespect in retail stores, housing discrimination known as redlining, difficulty in obtaining small business loans, etc.

That percentage of "ignorant assholes" is precisely those who I am speaking of. I never said "all whites" are racist. I never felt that way, and if you knew my background and my life experiences you would laugh at how silly that sounds. I you feel I am a jerk I will readily admit to that side of my personality. If you feel I am racist...that is your problem, not mine. Nothing in this thread substantiates that statement.
I've always gotten along well with most black dudes in the gym or with music, at school, wherever. If your ghetto or a gang banger, I probably won't like you no matter what race you are and I've ran into some of those people too.
Your personal experiences "getting along" with black people in passing means little regarding to institutional racism. Are you suggesting racism doesn't exist in America? If so, you are delusional at best, and lying at worst. Poll after poll suggest most white Americans acknowledge that racism exists in America. Of course, they themselves aren't racist, but some "other" whites out there are the cause of the problem. ::)
I take offense to the term "ghetto". It seems to be a catchall phrase nowadays, but when you are referring to inner city blacks with that term, it is offensive. There are good people from urban areas, hardworking and trying to better themselves. I come from the inner city, but my parents instilled values in me and gave the environment at home for me to excel academically and in other areas. As far as gang-bangers...who likes them? LOL There are criminals of all ethnicities, bro.
The point is that the more we come together, stop focusing on our ancestor's heritage/culture and start seeing us as Americans first (and race af ar 2nd), the better this country will be.
I agree, however blacks and Latinos did not create this environment of dividing people on race. I hope you realize that, otherwise you may want to take an American History course. I don't see large swaths of blacks, Mexicans, Boriquas (that's Puerto Ricans for you), Cubans, etc. seeing themselves as not Americans. But you also don't have a right to tell people to deny their ethnic heritage or the cultural traditions they cherish. When Americans stop calling themselves "Irish" or "Italian" or "Hungarian" or whatever, then perhaps African-Americans will just call themselves "American". However, we are a long ways from that...we are still a country of diverse peoples come together in a unique experiment unprecedented in the history of the world. People still have ties to the Motherland, whether real or largely imaginary.
People like Wright keep us in the past and keep racial fires burning by providing the gas. He's an asshole for continuing this stuff and right or wrong, he is hurting Obama.
That is your opinion, but African-Americans are entitled to reflect on past experiences amongst one another because it is a actually a source of strength, as well as an acknowledgement of the ancestors that paved the way for where we are today. Once again, when you start telling the Jews to get over the Holocaust with the same intensity you bring to the black community, then I will know you are serious. When you can call Wright an "asshole", you are reflecting your cultural ignorance and insulting many black ministers all over America.
Obama is his own man, and Wright is only hurting him if Obama cannot stand up as his
own man and repudiate the statements he disagrees with. If Obama couldn't stand on his own two feet and speak separate himself from this man then I believe he would need a spinal infusion. I do believe Obama showed he had a spine and forcefully made his opinions known today.
I understand some of his points historically speaking but our generation of Americans are much different. Understand but don't be stuck in the past.
Some Americans are different, yet some have not changed as much as we'd like. There are those who are still alive from the days of segregation in America. We also have some younger racists too, as evidenced in this very thread. Men who are my father's age can state that things are unquestionably better today for minorities than they were 40 or 50 years ago. We still have a ways to go to form a more perfect union.
Tre, your always a voice of reason. Guess that comes to more people as they get into their middle age yrs.
Tre's fine, but he's a bit milk toast. :D I am more inclined to speak more forcefully to get my point across. Unless I am joking around and being a jerk, I say what I mean and mean what I say without apology. As far as age, I am likely older than Tre. Just so ya' know. ;)

The title of this thread should be changed. There was as much fire to his speech than a empty Zippo lighter...
If you have ever heard any of Malcolm X speeches, now that shit is Nuclear, especially when he said his famous "Chickens coming to Roost" line. Even young Farakhan at the time couldn't beat that speech...

That is true. To the many unitiated to this type of ministry, it is "angry and full of hate". ::)
A young Farrakhan was not making national speeches '63 when Malcolm used that phrase. But when Minister Farrakhan ressurected the NOI in the 70's her most certainly has made some very "fiery" speeches that in many ways surpassed Malcolm in tone.
