Developed a taste for it- especially the curries- when i lived in Hong Kong. Got some Thai food tonight but it didn't quite cut it.

Good Indian food is hard to find here. The majority of Indian restaurants here, are opened up by Indian immigrants who had the opportunity to invest in a business or buy a business of their own etc.,
Unfortunately, they're for the most part ...entrepreneurs, ...not chefs, ...and it shows in the food. :'(
There was one great Indian restaurant near my house, and I loved just about EVERYTHING on their menu,
...but they closed down, ...and I haven't been able to find one whose menu I enjoyed.
I did have some great Jalabi 2 weekends ago tho, ...and some tikka, ...but it was way too spicy for me. :-X
-
Jalabi is way too sweet for me. Not too big a fan of their desserts-too sweet- although I like good kulfi. And I love the hot stuff.
-
I have a major sweet tooth, ...but ya, ...it was almost too sweet for me too.
Almost, ...but not quite. I still managed to finish 7/10ths of a pound of it. :P

OMG Indian food is my absolute favorite food. Great places are hard to come by but there is one in SF that is a little dive hole in the wall called Shalimar and EVERYTHING is phenominal. It's my daughter and my favorite spot!
-
I love chicken marsala and coconut nan bread.

I love Indian food; I also love Thai food, but you set yourself up for disappointment if you criticize Thai food for what it isn't (Indian). Also, all Thai restaurants are not created equal. Find a good one and you will be quite happy. I could not choose between Indian and Thai; both are delicious.
Give me a Thai iced tea with some Sagg and garlic nan and I'm a happy camper! :P

I'll check it out and report back. Any idea what part of town it's in?
There are so many great restaurants in SF!!

I absolutely ADORE Thai food, ...even Thai fast food. Give me a good peanut & ginger sauce and I'm in heaven! :P
I even make my own version of Thai pasta. Big Fat Rotini pasta... lightly tossed in a peanut ginger sauce... {drool}

No such thing as good Indian food.

OMG the BEST Thai place I have ever eaten is right on Castro. Have you been Bay??? I think it's called the Thai House Express, it' is by far the bestest I have had...my daughter took me and her dad there and it's was fabulous!!!
Shalimar is on the corner of Polk between California nd Pine. They don't take credit cards and it's a hole in the wall but by far the best I have had. There is always a line!!! YUMMY Try it and let me know what you think?
Also have you had Crustaceans, BayBGM?? There garlic noodles and deep fried crab is off the chain! :P

::)
true everything tastes the same, overly spiced, overly sauced and the restaurants smell like sweaty armpits

You've been going to the wrong Indian restaurants then. That's like comparing Spago to Sally's roadside diner.
Miggy, you have a sophisticated palate, as well as an appreciation for good food.
If you find yourself a good Indian restaurant, with a chef who knows what s/he is doing, ...you'll be in heaven.

I like that stuff that looks like green slop. It's delicious! Is it saag?

Might be chutney. I can't remember what saag is at the moment. I haven't gone very much since I've been back because my gf is not a fan of spicy food.

Saag.

Yeah that's it. Looks great :D

I can take it or leave it but it's okay and sufficient for a meal twice a month.

LOVE Indian food. My neighbors got me hooked.

I think you guys get Indian food mixed up with pakistani/afghani foods. Nan and chicken tika are really afghani in origin, while sweets like jalapi and other stuff are indian. Most Indian places serve piss poor nan and chicken tika, unless they're owned by kashmiris or punjabis. I know they all seem the same, but most Indians do not make good biriani and other stuff because it's not really their type of food. And paki places suck at making sweets. You're not gonna get good everything in one specific place.
calmus, jalapi will make you fatter than onlyme.

People should grow up, stop with this culinary shit, and just get burgers from McDonalds.

I don't like jalapi, it was jaguar or someone else who was the fan. This thread is making me hungry.
