Clemens Issues Apology For Mistakes, But Denies Affair

Houston (AHN) -- Roger Clemens threw a curve ball Sunday, apologizing to his family and the fans, saying he's made "mistakes" in his personal life.

The Rocket, however, denied having an extra-marital affair with country music singer Mindy McCready, in his first public comments since the allegation was made in stories published in the New York Daily News.

The former New York Yankees ace also used the opportunity with the Houston Chronicle, his hometown newspaper, to reiterate his claim that he has never used steroids or other performance-enhancing drugs.

"I know that many people want to know what I have to say about the recent articles in the media," Clemens said in the statement. "Even though these articles contain many false accusations and mistakes, I need to say that I have made mistakes in my personal life for which I am sorry. I have apologized to my family and apologize to my fans. Like everyone, I have flaws. I have sometimes made choices which have not been right."

The Daily News has used primarily anonymous sources in reporting that Clemens "carried on a decade-long affair with country star Mindy McCready, a romance that began when McCready was a 15-year-old aspiring singer performing in a karaoke bar and Clemens was a 28-year-old Red Sox ace and married father of two."

In the statement Sunday to the Houston paper, Clemens responded: "Now, I have been accused of having an improper relationship with a fifteen-year-old girl. Nothing could be further from the truth. This relationship has been twisted and distorted far beyond reality. It is just one of many, many accusations that are utterly false."

Clemens did not say why he's speaking out suddenly, except to tell the Chronicle: "I realize that many people want me to simply confess and apologize for the conduct that I have been accused of, but I cannot confess to, nor apologize for, things I did not do. I have apologized to my family for my mistakes. And having offered this apology to the public, I would ask that you let me and my family deal with these matters in private."

The statement by Clemens did not indicate whether he'll press on with his defamation suit against former trainer Brian McNamee, who testified before a congressional panel that the pitcher used steroids.

The Daily News has reported Clemens not only had an affair with McCready, but golf pro John Daly's former wife, Paulette Dean Dally.

He only did it to himself...rather be straight up about things then create a tangled web of deceit that you can't keep track of.
Better yet, the witch hunt that the steroid campaign of Bush & Co. are having is so unnecessary, the athletes (natural or not....who cares if they are or not?) shouldn't have to lie in order to save their reputation being based on what people would want. They want to see Roger throw 95+ time and time again, but at his age he can't do it without a bit of help.
Kind of a fucked up "supply and demand" kind of thing.

Who hasn't had an inappropriate relationship with a 15-year-old girl?

That's all the rage right now!

Good post.
The diffeence between bodybuilding an other pro sports is this:
Drugs are used in all major pro sports. But in most sports like baseball, when you get caught useing they say you cheated and try to disqualify you and ask why???. In bodybuilding they not only accept drug use , they encourage it and ask why not?

And they only become mistakes when the person gets caught.

He has brought all of this on himself.

He filed a defamation lawsuit against his trainer. That enables his trainer and his trainers lawyer to dig anything up on Clemens they want.

HoF voters don't take marital affairs into their voting criteria.  First ballot HoF for sure.

It's like being a kid. You get your butt whipped (or get it whipped even worse) for lying than for doing what you actually did.

It appears that the feds are looking for the witchhunt. Clemens should have done what Arnold did. When asked if he took steroids, he simply said, "Yes, I do." and that was it.

Why do people care about things like this? When this story is on the front page of the newspapers, what stories do you think the newspapers are trying to cover up?

They aren't trying to cover up anything.  They are pandering to the lowest common denominator of society in hopes of saving their ever-dwindling circulation.

It very may well affect his induction into the Hall.  The Hall is filled with players that are shit as humans.  As long as your transgressions did not involve baseball, then you are in if otherwise qualified.  So, as long as no one proves he did performance enhancing drugs in violation of MLB rules, then he is golden.  The affairs and the molesting of the 15 year old will not bar him from the Hall.

Could he become a pariah like Pete Rose?, or the other guy...what was his name...who shook his finger at the congressmen..."I did not do steroids..."...and then got caught on steroids....

I was confused because I had nothing to do with Jeff at that time. It got deleted from the main boards by whoever. I never asked. I kept it up on the X cause I didn't care. Anybody I talk to knows that info already. Jodels called me though to apologize on Jeff's behalf. haha

Clemens and McGwire aren't even in the same realm in baseball terms.  Clemens is one of the best pitchers to ever to play the game.

You call reporting on one of the biggest stars in history breaking the law and sleeping with young women pandering? I don't think their is a form of medium that isn't reporting on this somehow.

Your right though, no one reads the paper anymore.

Maybe so, but it's irrelevant when it comes when it comes to HoF contention, which was the original point.
