Cormier never squatted 800 frickin' pounds. Get serious. Dude had a big photo feature in one of the mags years ago with him squatting 675, and...they weren't even close to being "legal" depth.

It's like when Dillett once stated that he doesn't do squats because leg presses work better for him, but if he did squat, he'd easily use 700 pounds. As if.

Do people have a clue what kind of feat of strength a 600+ squat is? Hell, the guys actually raw squatting with this much weight have trained specifically for this task for years and years. Guys like Paul think just because they're huge they can do it. Seven hundred pounds would have snapped Dillett like a twig.

Oh, if he did say he could squat 800-plus pounds, believe me, he was lying BIG TIME. Chris is a strong SOB, no doubt. But there is zero chance the dude has ever squatted a good rep with 800 pounds.

Yes, he did. Awesome. But even his reps were not legal depth, and he was wearing a power suit and wraps, as well. To raw squat 700 or 800 pounds to depth is an utterly incredible achievement.

he went pretty deep
coleman has huge legs his hams touched his ankles
also ive seen coleman do 10 to 12 reps with 6 plates.. and front squats with 6.. i dont thnk an 800 or 765 is beyond him

There is something to be said that, because Coleman's hams are so developed, and his stance is so relatively narrow, his hitting full depth is next to impossible. Of course, if the man trained specifically for top-end strength, there is little doubt he could done a over 800, yes.

My points are, there's no way Cormier ever squatted 800 pounds, and too many folks underestimate in a big way just how heavy a 600-plus squat really is.

to be honest i dont think cormier could either judging on the big deal he made about 675.. and yess i agree 800 is extremely heavy for squats .....in the gym a lot of guys loads the plates up and go half way... i can count on one hand 2 fingers missing the ammount of guys ive seen go deep on squats with 315

Good post.

When you watch coleman's form you see he goes about as deep as his body allows with a close stance...there isn't a doubt in my mind that ronnie "could" have squated 750+ RAW with proper training back a few years ago. not sure about now...

Chris squatting 675 is incredible...i've seen top ranked 300 pound powerlifters struggle with 675.

Both guys are strong as hell but ronnie has the upper hand in every department.

Yes, it drives me crazy. Dudes go around saying they squat 315 or 405 and aren't even CLOSE. I say it's very respectable to go to depth with 315 (Olympic style) for moderate to high reps. In over 20 years of training, I can count few men who I have witnessed squatting three or four plates for a decent set of 10.

I squatted almost exactly that weight in a meet weighing 265. I wore a very basic power suit and knee wraps. I can tell you, it is damn heavy. I have done a raw Olympic squat to the basement with just over 600 pounds. My eyes almost blew out of my head. I am closing in on a 650 raw squat (lifetime drug-free). Sorry about the braggin'. Point is, 600+ (hell, 400+) squats are HEAVY squats.

These dudes who use high-tech suits, ultra-wide stances, monolifts, and hit "iffy" depth in competition for white lights (these federations should be ashamed) to post 800+ squats are not helping the sport of powerlifting advance towards legitimacy.

Thanks so much! I just turned 38. Been lifting since I was 15 and 135 pounds. Never stopped training. Ever. I WILL squat 700 Olypic style, raw and drug-free before I begin my descent into old age (ha, ha). Give me, oh, four years. Sometimes I do walkouts with 7-800 pounds and think, Am I crazy?! But what can I say? I love it. Such a rush.

Four hundred and five pounds is a great squat, dude! Congrats! I found it to be the hardest progression to develop the ability to perform repetitions with 405. Not even 495 was as hard for some strange reason. I can now, on a good day, do over 15 with it. I have done two sets of 10 with it, as well. Brutal. Just...brutal. But, again, so FUN. You feel like a king for that brief moment.

Keep it up, man!

Oh that is drug free also. So once it is time to gear up then at least i will do the 180's.

Few powerlifters can raw squat 800 pounds, and I'll tell you more, I don't know any powerlfiter capable of doing 2 reps with 800 pounds at 4% bodyfat... The depth that Ronie did is perfectly legal, I saw powerlifters with legs wide open not going so far... Ronnie, Platz, Eddie Robinson, Ruhl could easily wipe out most powerlifters ass... with 3 months training...

Here's your proof. Anyone who knows anything about squatting can see Chris didn't hit any degree of depth with these reps; not with technique like this! Hell, his knees would explose if he went below parallel. Not to mention he'd probably pitch forward before that happened and crash land his face into the floor.

You're right. Few powerlifters can raw squat 800 pounds. Ronnie ain't doing it, either. He's got a suit and wraps on. But I do think with proper training he perhaps could have.

Please don't suggest his depth was legal. It was not. Not in a legit federation. Forget those ones where an inch above parallel is perfectly acceptable. He was close, though; I'll give him that.

Many bodybuilders from the past and present would make great powerlifters, yes. Hell, when I squatted with Platz in 1994 it was obvious how gifted he is. To see Coleman lift in person is a thing of wonder. I used to train at the gym where Robinson lifted in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, and, according to the older members, yes, the stories of his strength are true. Extremely powerful man.

Coan could hit a triple raw with 800-plus at single-digit bodyfat, no doubt. And weighing well under 240, too. Dude deadlifted 903 at 229 pounds about 15 years ago! The true elite powerlifters lifting in legit feds like the IPF, etc. are capable of ENORMOUS feats of strength.
