None of those suppositions.

He just had a big ass neck, and, unlike most all bb's, used heavy-duty neck machines and exercises and treated his neck as a priority

do you think that helped him in any comp.

honestly, i dont see how it could have. he has a great physique, but that neck is so distracting

Exactly, airosol...I don't think it helped or hurt him. Maybe it was, indeed, distracting to the judges somewhat.

He came into Gold's San Diego back around 89 or so, and he was so small no one recognized him. It was only after one of the desk guys told us he was Jeff King that we noticed him. He was not 190#, 180# max.

Very small. But looked good.

How much could King squat?? Weights reps and sets. Whole routine if you remember it.

It would have been cool to put Jeff King up against Matt Mendenhall, Shawn Ray, Mike Christian and some of the other top guys from the 80's.

Jeff King should have been competing against the best, and the AAU and NABBA were not the best by a long shot.

Even though he won the Mr. A. 25 years ago-I think that 1983 Mr. A. physique could win National shows today in the NPC, and do well in the IFBB.

you have a bunch of 80s guys who never realized their potential (atleast not competition wise); jeff king is definately one of those. same thing goes for rory leidelmeyer + several others.

i think jeff king got tired of all the political bs that surrounded bodybuilding.

some of these guys would have given haney a run for his money. (and gaspari would never have been in top 3)

Post by: wes on May 22, 2008, 04:49:08 AM
King was strong but didn`rt train mega-heavy,but his form was impeccable.

Don`t know what his max squat was but he`d do reps with 450 or more ass to the grass.

when he walked you could see all kinds of fibers jumping like crazy in his calves which were awesome.

Jeff went to Weider,Weider told Jeff that to compete in the IFBB he would have to win the Nationals and the Universe.

King said he already won the AAU and NABBA versions of each contest,so that was it as far as a contract with Weider was concerned.

Jeff refused to do these shows as he felt he had already proven himsealf as a top bodybuilder.

If you see, or contact King, let him know we want some pics...... BTW, Tim Belhap had the same problem as King, at the same time.

In the 80's you have to win the Universe/World Championships to become a pro-not just Nationals (or other shows like the USA later on).

Belknap won the America (in 81, last year for that name), but lost at the Universe, came in second, could not go pro. To go to the Universe in 82 he again had to win his weight class at Nationals (but could not be given the title, only the Universe spot earned from the weight class win), he came in second that year at Nationals, no Universe spot or Pro card. Repeated this in 83 and he said fuck it and went the NABBA route.

Eventually the IFBB let him in.

So King was not the only person gettig dicked around-as evidenced by Belknap.

If my information is correct, Jeff is 5'10.5".  180 at that height would be impressive if it was a lean 180.  I had heard before about him being seen by people in the late eighties (1987 I believe) being a shell of his former self.

I was the one that spotted King in 88 or so, at Gold's San Diego when he was on vacation, and he was nothing. 180-190# max, and did not recognize him, was told by the front desk who he was, and I was shocked.

The year Rory and Bob Paris competed at Nationals (83-San Jose) he looked great-BUT, I do not think he looked as good as in the pic I posted-he never looked that good on stage, but 83 is close.

And who ever said he ran into Paris was correct. Paris was unbeatable-Berry DeMay found that out later on at the Universe.

Rory actually trained Paris when Paris moved out to the west coast (OC) from Indiana. Would make Paris bulk up to insane obese weights and Paris said fuck this shit, and left Rory and his training advice.

back in the 80s they overdid everything (almost). dieting, training (volume).

motherfuckers would have been just as good doing 3-6 working sets per muscle group 2 times per week or every fifth day. (on for example an upper/lower split)

Bob Paris deserved the win but it was close. If you look at the pics it was natural structure that gives it to Bob. His waist is smaller yet his shoulders are also wider than Rory's. They were close but Bob's natural structure put him ahead of Rory.

I didn't hear the story though; are you saying that the promoter paid $35K because Bob won or that he had to pay that AND give Bob the victory? For what reason?

The Beef

I don't know Matt-I met him one time when he was considering buy into the Oseanside gGold's back in 88, have not seen him since.

Reminds me of the first time I hit Gold's Venice (82), right after Mike Christian won the Cal, and Mike was in there doing 405# reps on inclines (as was his partner), and then they went to BP and hit 495# reps. I was like WTF is in the water at this place  ;D
