Title: Ladies who hyphenate two last names
Post by: Moosejay on May 10, 2008, 06:37:26 AM
Like a woman gets married...does note relinquish her maiden name...but does the 'Nancy Anderson-Lipkowicsz' thing...

I have a rule...I never read or acknowledge a whole name if it has more syllables than the name of 'Arnold Schwarzenegger'....

I'd say, "Hello, Ms. Lipkowicsz..."

Thoughts on this?

In my culture, and many here, both last names are always kept - and passed onto children, so in effect we all have at least 2 last names. Can be helpful as you somewhat have 2 legal identities, also can cause mass confusion at times.

Indeed, it could be a cultural thing. Here, it is a nuisance

Here too, possibly worse.

I should not laugh, as it is actually not funny, but it lets ppl get away with everything. Like when guys get their drivers licence suspended, they just march down and get another licence with their other name. All those types of things happen.

Not sure how old you are, MJ, but several years ago, Hillary Clinton demanded requested that people start calling her 'Hillary Rodham Clinton' and, of course, the liberal media all bowed to her demands.

Yet, that somehow went away.  I haven't seen a single campaign poster with the 'Rodham' included.

Funny how things change when someone wants to be *gasp* President.

I believe it goes along with the whole "male-dominance" thing that women won't accept nowadays.  As if having the same last name as your husband constitues "owning" them.  At what point did "male/head of household" become such a figurehead title?  I can't stand it.

This is similar to Latinos. Many have the last maiden name and fathers name or if the father kept his mothers maiden name as well so there essentially two maiden names. Which means the names can be switched up, and identities can be changed real quick.

And you can tell you're from the British West Indies because of your use of "their" way of spelling "license" :D

Hyphens should be outlawed altogether.

Anderson-Lipkowicsz
African-/Mexican-American
Differently-abled, chromosomally-challenged, gangsta-rappin' Corky

Syllables don't build self esteem.

There are only about 20 spanish surnames, hyphens and two last names are pretty  much required.

I think that if a woman gets to keep her last name in a hypenated system it is only fair that the man gets to choose a fitting hypenated first name of his choice.

For instance if your name is Bob and you are well endowed you could chose to be called BigDick-Bob or if you are a typical Getbig meathead you could chose "cookmyfuckingdinnerifyou dontwantyourassbeat-Jerry.
