thats what ive heard anyway correct me if im wrong
how much did he bench, deadlift and squat?
wasnt he more of a "pumper" ? he was in love with the pump
-
In his Encyclopedia of BB there are photos of him Benching 4 plates and Squatting 5 plates
His routines for Advanced lifters are a bit outrageous, it woul take me nearly 4 hours to do his routine.
-
His numbers were 675 deadlift, 405 bench, and 455 squat.
-
Bluto, how long till 30,000 posts
-
sure he wasnt so strong like some getbiggers.
but in PUMPING IRON he perform concentration curls with 70 pound dumbell - pretty heavy for this exercise.
-
heavy weight low reps build muscle but some ppl can build muscle with lighter weight even if they are 6'2"
arnold was pretty strong...franco was stronger with some movements ......
but comparing arnold to strength freaks like JOJ and coleman, dorian etc.....theres no point
arnold used enough weight to build his body the way he wanted it, and enough weight to keep good form
i see too many pros with bad form and not going to complete failure .....although complete failure is not always the target...

yep arnold was defo a volume bodybuilder... i think i have taken this on board too much in the past and not went heavy enough or as heavy as i should have.....
-
so he wasnt very strong was he? and he didnt train very hard did he?
he was no dorian thats for sure i think we all can agree on that cant we?
-
Franco was miles stronger than Arnold.

suppose so....arnold was not extremely weak either ...think about the strength benefits of todays anabolics
Franco was miles stronger than Arnold.
he wasnt miles stronger than arnold .....the unusual thing about franco being stronger in the odd exercise was that he was 14 inches shorter....and a lot lighter......
but franco was indeed a strength freak

Arnold is a man who had muscles on his body.

this is true

That "pumping" got him 7 Olympia's
-

dead possibly correct.
no way he benched and squatted those numbers. For a couple of reps id say yes.
Hell im only a few lbs of his bench press.
-
Arnold = All pumping.

Where is Pollux when you need him?
Zane was a much stronger squatter than Big A
-

Groupies like Pollux aren't necessarily more knowledgeable.
I've never ever heard about Zane using substantial poundages; Waller for squats ya.
-
Arnold was intense in the gym and trained his ass off.
No need to squat 600 pounds if you`re not a powerlifter.
-

This theory about him training hard, can you substantiate that he did? So far i see no proof of it, but plenty evidence of long pumping sessions.
-
Someone build Bluto a time machine. There are some pictures floating about which are captioned 66xlb in one and 710lb in the other for the deadlift. Maybe Pollux can help here. Justin Harris does 315lb for 12 on incline on a youtube vid. I think Arnold could have done that 30-35 years ago at his peak strength and weight. Maybe Bluto could too if he stop living in past :D

Sounds pretty weak compared to Dorian. ;)

Only people who don't know shit about lifting would think this. Sorry to tell you but you have to train pretty hard to look like this. No matter how much drugs.

Arnold is the man ! ;)

Sorry, you can't count 1980.

curling pic has to be fake. The bar isnt even bending. Plus, this is the same amount of weight he is deadlifting in the other pic.

No kidding lol that was from a movie actually .

Your fantasy is gorgeous transvestites ;) don't project your man-lust on me .

so if these fake pics were used to illustrate how hard he trained and how much he lifted
shouldnt they be replaced with some proper pics?

By some Spageti tarzan like Arnold? ::)

The bottom pic is fake it was from the movie Stay Hungry ! the top three are all real and strength matters NOT in professional bodybuilding its all about appearances and Arnold simply looked better than his contemporaries on stage.

Completely beside the point of the thread, as usual for our resident ADD victim. :-* Get this kid some klenex.

Your projection is the point , you're like the other jackass Hulkster who follows me from thread to thread looking for revenge for all the times I bitch slapped you .
you took this topic off track and don't like when I point out your chances with she-males , you never did exactly address how you had " the chance " with the she-males explain how that unfolds lol
-
700+ lbs deadlift as a young guy.
Arnold was strong.

He reeks of defensiveness about his white BB heroes, as usual.
Hope this helps ;D

Hey another projection by pumpster , race . you feel the need everytime to claim race when your ebony heros are defeated by caucasians .
Arnold/Dorian/Cutler ( add any caucasian ) won because of ' politics ' but when guys clearly lost like Ronnoe 2001 he ( according to you ) ' dominated ' by losing the whole pre-judging lol you're in a dark place ( no pun intended )
-
Groupies like Pollux aren't necessarily more knowledgeable.
I've never ever heard about Zane using substantial poundages; Waller for squats ya.
Zane was a very strong squatter, especially prior to his Mr. Universe win, in the mid 60's. He easily full rep squats for reps....when training with A, A would always be pissed he could not keep up with Zane with legs.
That is one of the reasons A liked to train with Katz every summer Mike would come out to Cali.
Arnold likes training upper body, but hated training legs. Footballer Mike loved training legs, and he'd push Arnold...so it worked out like that.
-
Only people who don't know shit about lifting would think this. Sorry to tell you but you have to train pretty hard to look like this. No matter how much drugs.
haha, "I look totally awesome". I would say the same thing if I ever looked this good.
-
Zane's lifting numbers? what is his height?
-
700+ lbs deadlift as a young guy.
Arnold was strong.
NOT as strong as Marvin Eder
-
Zane's lifting numbers? what is his height?
5'8", 5'9"...not terribly strong...in squat he was, though...early in his career
-
Arnold was strong as fuck in his early years ..Typical get big bullshit ::)
When he came to the USA he thought you turn up big you win the show , but he learnt a lesson from a much more ripped frank zane who handed Arnold one of his last defeats..
He had enough mass when he arrived in the States so went about "refining" what he had all ready built..
He competed in powerlifting when he was younger and won comps So I doubt he was "weak"
He also used to wear out training partners , not cos he used to fuck there GFs ;D but his mental drive was unmatched so he used to just burn them out.
I wouldnt use pumping iron as a tool to gauge how Arnold trained , most of that was all staged for the camera..
Arnold and the guys from that era also trained much harder than the guys do today..
Can you imagine the guys today trying to do 30 - 60 sets per bodypart 2 - 3 times a week?
It would kill them , alot of them now get out of breath just walking :-\
-

Unconvincing..no reason for him to hold back given that others who were filmed didn't, but he did. Lots of grimacing, mugging and grunting in lieu of taking it farther.
-
Zane's lifting numbers? what is his height?
120 squat for reps, he wasn't really a believer in bench press or deadlift....he did push ups and went swimming instead.
Thats how he built that swimmers physique!!!!!!! :o
::)

Was there any truth to this story?
Arnold, Franco and a couple others would take their Gf's, Weights and go train in the forest all day in Germany. Beer, steaks and babes in between sets. Sounds pretty hardcore
-
training all day becomes more a thing of endurance then, you cant possibly train hard and intense and go on for hours and hours. isnt that the reason we when we hit the gym go for the most important muscle groups and exercises first, since we know we're fresh and have the most energy?
-

Not sure if Franco was involved ,but yes have heard they used to load up the trunk of the VW with 20kg plates and head for the forest..Arnold said that he felt like a warrior ala Conan when he done this and chucking logic out the window in regards to training from time to time did wonders for his growth
-
If you're not a powerlifter who gives a fuck about how much someone squats or benches? Maxing out everytime you go to the gym is for insecure types, the same ones who never make decent gains.

What about when people ask "what ya bench?" All those muscles don't mean shit if you can't reply with a big number!
-

NOT as strong as Marvin Eder
pound for pound practically nobody is as strong as marvin eder.
-

Too risky, guys always are like "wanna catch a workout" and shit like that. They act like working out is like golf, something to do casually with friends. At any rate, strength first, muscles will come later, trust me on this Mars.
-

People ask me this all the time at work and I just say to the "what do you think I bench?" They usually give me a respectable figure and than I tell them I haven't done a bench press in 8 years.

All correct.
If you want to talk 'athletes'...Arnie et al, THEY were athletes.
the gus today, replete with sweating and panting upon incidental movement...they are not.

BINGO.
Specially for many of the youths inhabiting this site.
Look good, tell people you are strong.
they won't know the difference, you will save yourself injury.
You will not be playing in the NFL.

Because you are not enlightened.

Imagine being with him when he did this. Fuckin cool. 8)

WG...he did this while still in Austria...prior to meeting up with Franco in Germany...did it with his bros from Thal
-
Sorry, you can't count 1980.
so you cant count some colemanīs olympias, about 2 of dorian...probably francoīs...and the list goes on...

Re: arnold wasnt very strong was he and he didnt train very hard did he?
When youre 20 years old (still under age) and yet youre the biggest bb everywhere you go, why bother trainning heavy?
When he came over from Europe, He got beaten by zane who was over 50 pounds lighter than him!!!
WOOOSSSHHHHHHHHHH !!!!

Ahh yes Thanks MJ.
I read alot about Arnold from lots of sources growing up , he was and proberly still is my idol , though as you age other areas of your life become a priority.
But a man who started with nothing as a boy , came from an average family with no wealth to speak of, could not speak english but yet he became the best bodybuilder on the planet , one of the biggest payed box office stars of our lifetimes , a very successful businessman and now a Politician,The man is somthing special in my mind...
When I need a lift to train its pics and articles of and by Arnold that rev me up..I dont care for the guys of today..to me Arnolds charisma still is what drives my interest in bodybuilding and I look at the guys of that era as freaks still , the guys today are just walking sceince projects gone wrong..
MJ I know you got to see Robby as a teen did you ever rub shoulders with the great oak at all?
-
WG...Arnold is likely the only guy I didn't interact with or ever even see.
And don't be surprised is physiques start to someday migrate back to the look of yesteryear...with current times being seen as a bleak ones for the state of bb
-
His numbers were 675 deadlift, 405 bench, and 455 squat.
405 bench FOR 8! According to him anyway. So single it's hard to say. Singles are gay anyway.
-
Poor Arnold
he didn't accomplish much in the bodybuilding world, after he retired what did he accomplish? compare him to any beach bum, g4p, washed up no kidney mfer. the simple fact is: the would not be bodybuilding if there was no Arnold.
hope this post didn't stop you from rubbing one off...
-

comming from a mass monster like you must be true ;D you need form 1st then as you move up in weight you do it right so you avoid injury, muscle can grow even with medium weight. some people are naturally strong,

Iron Man was f---ing awesome.
More accurate and true to the comic than even spiderman was

True.
there are dudes baling hay on farms throughout the country who have never touched a weight and could likely pull a trophy in a show
-
I liked zanes physique. I wonder what kind of lifts he was making back in the day.
-
sounds to me arnold wasnt very strong
-
I liked zanes physique. I wonder what kind of lifts he was making back in the day.
Strong on legs early on...marginal on all else for his career...there was a point where he went overboard with the weight poundages to play the size game...but could not avoid injuries so abandoned this ploy
-

With a max bench around 400 that's pretty solid in fact, that's definitely strong if not exceptional. There's no value to have gone higher just to satisfy a bluto's opinion. Some of the knuckleheads here don't get that while they can bench around the same thing that was done 30 years ago and the idea was development, not ego or numbers. Really no reason to have to be one of the strongest BBs around other than ego and the fact that some guys are just naturally stronger.
What i'm more interested in is whether he trained hard, which is hard to substantiate despite the many urban legends he and others propogate about him.
-

I doubt he worked out hard.
-
I doubt he worked out hard.
So do you think you train hard?
-
RR trains hard, to this I can attest. He will almost cry telling you how hard he trains
-
So do you think you train hard?
no, atleast I'm honest. I go to the gym everyday, workout for alittle bit and then do something else for the rest of my day.
if you really think arnold spent all his time bodybuilding he wouldn't be where he is today. be realistic here. everything you read in magazines is to motivate people and give them hope, he is fortunate enough to have good genetics and a good foundation. I did not say he didn't work out all I am saying is he didn't work out as hard as we are led to believe.
-
he was a ronnie perhaps
but no dorian
i think is safe to say
when it comes to training intensity and so on and so forth etc etc
-

Not quite. He DID spend lots of time BB for years, in fact his initial tough life as an immigrant was once/twice daily workouts, a little sun, occasional college classes and various encounters in party-central Venice of the 60s and 70s.
He spent plenty of time training, he was essentially paid to, the question's whether he really worked hard, as claimed for decades. By no means was he a slouch in the gym but i'm curious as to the intensity he used.

in the beginning, of course he worked out hard because he had to. no denying that. i agree with your point.
once he reached his ideal, it couldn't have been very hard for him to get back into shape when he needed to. ∴ I doubt he had a high intensity to his training.
-

Actually that's backwards; he was training more frequently and longer later in his career using things like the double-split, to refine what had been built earlier.

maybe
you might have burned me on this one lol
