hahah so far so good, I'm here enjoying my coffee in capetown and my wife is shopping ;)
Four days in capetown have shown me so far, it's not as dangerous at I thought it would be, the weather can change in a minute and I can get very sick on open water... Whoo?
Let me explain, third day in we had planed and booked for out white shark cage diving experience, early (04.00) pickup and two our drive through the country side brought us finally to goosebay and after a short breakfast we and 10 others were on a boat (with mixed feelings) on our way to shark alley (some of you may have seen that particular spot on National Geographic).
Shark alley is a small spot with a small island with 1000 of seals, and around the island the greatest concentration of white sharks.
It was always a dream of me to swim with these creatures and see them as close as possible.
So after a 30 boat ride we were finally there, getting ready...
The cage was lifted into the water and we got out wet suits on.
I swear as soon as on of the guys put a rope with some tuna heads into the water 2 second later we saw the first white shark, just casually checking out the bate and moving on.
After that it took approximately 15 for the next one to show up, at that time we were already in the water ready for anything, a huge one at least 3 meters long and let me tell you folks that is fockin huge.
After spening a lot of time in the water and seeing a lot of sharks all different white once from very large to quite small I came to fellowing conclusions and I know most of you will not understand that unless you have done the same cage diving experience.
1) National Geographic or any other shark program greatly go over the top, and show only the goriest bits, having seen these awesome guys close I honestly say they are very calm and mostly very very shy.
2) I swear this is true, after watching them for a while (and I don't know why) but my wife had the same feeling ) we both thought it would be quite alright if the cage would have had doors and we would have not been separated by a cage, they are way less threatening as they make them look on the TV.
Awesome creatures and yes you need some form of respect but i have changed my initial idea about these animals all together.
So far so good tomorrow it's of to our safari stand by for more new ;)

Worthless without pics

Cage fighting with white sharks? ::)
-
if you get a chance, watch the documentary 'sharkwater'.
it's about how the mass slaugher of sharks will eventually come bcak to haunt us in the the form of oxygen depletion (sharks are a predator which controls the amount of fish that feed off plankton whihc is responsible for the oceans release of oxygen)
anyway, he is i believe the only person to have ever skin-dived with whites. he saya he lowers his heart rate and controls it as to not make them nervous, in turn they are passive.
most shark attacks come a a resut of mistaking humans for seals, and quickly become hated which is unfortunate as they are natures most perfect predator.
incidently it makes me curious- would you walk thru a rainforest in india, or a grassland in africa and not expect to get attacked by a tiger or lion? then why are people surpised when attacked in the ocean. sometimes i think we are the stupidest of mammals.

LOL. Maybe he had his Tapout shirt on?

It's a great story Stark and I'm sure you're having a lovely time, but if you're going to tell us all about it we need at least one photo of this experience.

Stark, get information on a photo-safari. I am planning a trip for me and my daughter and her kids to have one next year. I want to know what you think about it if you are going on one.

No problem mate I'm flying today so I don't think I will be able to post soon, but I keep all the info and a diary anyways so I have a good chat with you when I'm back.
To the one that said he wouldn't go into the cage, it's by far less terrifying than you may think, they are such awesome creatures and I never had the feeling for once they were out to get us, in fact they were more casualy drivting by checking out what all the comosion is.
Remember the guy that pioneered the white shark free diving without cage? I asked the guide who is doing this trip with tourists and cage for 9 years and he said there are now LOADS of people who do that.
I'll promise you if 4 19 year old american girls on an exchange trip (they were on our boat) can do it so could you, as I said the nature movies make them look much more dramatic as they really are.
The whole trip got filmed and we bought the film I'm going to post some of it sooner or later and you know what i mean.
All the best love you all ;)
The pic was the first shark, he got half his fin bitten off.

Hey Stark you are in my town ;)
-
On several diving trips I've witnessed White tips, Black tips, Grey reef sharks, Hammerheads, and 1 Oceanic White tip reef shark.
Cage diving with the big white would be a great experience.

You sound like one of those idiot hippies who believe Lions aren't out to hurt you, so go prodding them and get mauled.
If you feel so confident, why don't you swim with them without the cage? ???
I'll send you $200 if you get a thumbs up pose with a great white with your arm around it.

ahhh they are harmless little things ;D

If stark loses a finger, his posting speed will slow significantly...
....unless he's been typing with one hand all along.
