Whats a canteen?

i was at this canteen when this woman that looks around 40 or so called me "boy over here". so i looked at her and told her to be polite (i am well into my twenties). then she starts being an asshole and says when its not my fault i am older than you.
so i looked at her and said "is this the way a woman talks to a man?" i was about to ask her if she has done her dishes at home before coming to work when i was pushed along by the queue
the next day i bought the same food and my food was falling off the plate cause she didnt place it in properly, i told her "look waitress at least place the food properly, this is your job"
i have been getting very dirty staredowns from her and all her woman colleagues the previous few days so i am avoiding that place for now, i had my fun haha
discuss!

A canteen is a UK word for a dining establishment, like a mess hall or dinner hall. I didn't know they didn't use that word in the US. Well, not for that anyway.
