Title: Well let's hope this works...
Post by: Rimbaud on May 29, 2008, 09:55:03 AM
Well it's not all sunshine & flowers in Rimbauds world right now because this morning I had surgery to repair nerve damage in my hand (I thought it was elbow but it turns out the problem was in my wrist & thumb). Well I hope this works so I can get back to training like a madman ASAP. According to my doctor I should be able to train in about six or seven weeks.

Thats what I have been doing since I tore my bicep man. I am starting to go a little crazy because my workouts have been cut out so much and when I can go, there are only certain things I can do. Use this time to eat well and lose some bodyfat, that has been keeping me sane. Legs,Abs,Good Mornings for back and Cardio, take your pick for the day.

You should know better than to work around an injury.

You will only overcompensate and create another injury if you do this.

Title: UPDATE
Post by: Rimbaud on September 23, 2008, 09:17:17 AM
Well, I thought I add something to this thread I started a few months ago. All the stuff they did to my left hand healed up perfectly & I'm kicking myself for not having it seriously looked at sooner. In July I decided to have carpal tunnel surgery on my right hand. I have to admit it's healing really slowly (probably because I'm right handed). My plans were for while I was off work was to do a lot of cardio & such. However, I decided to simply enjoy my time off rather then train all the time & watch what I eat. Enjoyed the long rest but got a little soft. I wouldn't say fat just soft.

I began seriously training again September 1 & it's been interesting (lots of cable flyes). My right palm is very sore so pressing movements will pretty much be out the window for awhile (I'm not going to even try to seriously bench or anything until December). Other then that strength is returning at an acceptable level but can't do high reps like I used to (yet). Hopefully if all goes well strength & I will be hitting the gym together for a training session.

Currently no plans for a cycle in the forseeable future. But I did find about 200 tbol tabs in my old bag that I used to hide my goodies in so I may take a ride with those for six weeks in a couple months.

Glad to hear it's getting back to normal.

It's hard to believe i had my ACL reconstruction 1.5 years ago, it hardly ever bothers me anymore and i'm already squating and deadlifting decent numbers again.

Nice.

The only real issues are I've only got about 75% of my grip strength & my wrist is a little weak. But it'll get there.

The best thing is to take it slow so you dont have a setback.  I just had surgery on my shoulder Fri.  I've had a sore rotator cuff for about a year, so the doc shaved the bone down to relieve some of the pressure.  Also removed alot of bone spurs.  I blame myself for not taking a break and letting my body heal.  Hopefully I can start some cardio in a week or so.  But as far as training with weights I'm sure it will be a while.

How much scar tissue did they take out of the wrist?

Was it the outpatient procedure?

Well another baby step in my recovery world. My right hand was really slow to heal but this week for the first time I was able to do a few push-ups. Up until a week or two ago my right palm was too tender to even think about doing anything like that. However, I'm still planning to hold off any benchpressing/dumbbell pressing until after January 1.

Have your massage therapist work it hard.........you'll need to break up scar tissue and tenderness.

Part of the problem was that have to cut through a lot of muscle in the hand...which left it really tender. Shit, I massaged my hand(s) all the time. It's even a habit now months later.

Post by: Rimbaud on January 04, 2009, 06:42:00 PM
Well boys & girls this will be my last update. As of today I feel 100% completely healed.

Today was my first "real" chest workout since April 2008 (chest was exceptionally hard to train with the lack of grip strength & later the pain in my palms). Since returning to the gym I've been pretty much doing light machine (Hammer Strength, Nautilus, etc) & doing cable flyes. Today I actually benched for the first time in forever. I didn't set any records in fact it was rather light (I did ten sets of five reps with 150lbs. on the incline bench). I know it wasn't much & I felt like a could've easily done 50+ more pounds & added 5+ reps to each set but I didn't want to go too crazy. I just wanted everything kind of controlled for the first couple times I train chest by either bench pressing or dumbbell pressing. Either way it was nice to do something other then banging out reps on the Hammer Strength Machine. ;D

For about a year now, every month or so, for about a week my hands get very numb.....but in the monring is the worst. I think that kind of surgery if for carpal tunnel if I am correct, the scar in his hand indicates carpel tunnel surgery.  Wait for Rim's answer to be completely sure.

hey  man go to walmart or medical supply store or even a sporting goods store and find some hand braces that keep in your hand straight or even a little pushed out...almost  like if your head was resting in your hand....i had the same problem wigth the numbness and severe pain for a while now (couple years) and one of my pals turned me on to those braces and in the begining i wore them every night but now i can get away with wearing them like once a week cause after a while your hand will just start going to that position w\o the braces...also try not to sleep with your hands under your head or on the side of your body...good luck..

For your health you got to take time and make sure you'll have a good recover. Don't burns step or u'll regret it.

I initially was planning on training lower body & doing cardio. But the stress of only using one arm for about six weeks or so killed my back. So instead I just resorted to taking 5-10 mile walks around the lake near me. Not exciting but worked out ok. Also during my recovery a lot of cook outs & beer!  ;D
